Does anyone know about how long, approximately, it would take for someone to advance through the ranks? Is there a minimum amount of time, in times of relative peace, which you would have to be a certain rank before being promoted?

In the United States, promotion schedules go roughly as follows:
Enlisted: Army private/Navy Seaman recruit E1 (basic training, six weeks) Army Private first class/Navy Seaman E2 from 6 weeks-6 months Army Corporal/Navy Seaman E3 6 months - 1 to 2 years, depending on what happens Army Sergeant/Navy Petty Officer E4 2-4 years Officers: Army 2nd Lieutenant/Navy Ensign: Commission-2 years Army 1st Lieutenant/Navy Lieutenant Jr Grade: 2-4 years Army Captain/Navy Lieutenant 4-6 or 9 years Army Major/Navy Lieutenant Commander: after 8 years I don't know anything about the UK military, but I imagine that their promotion schedule is similar. Also, once you get past either Sergeant in the enlisted ranks or Lieutenant in the officer ranks, promotion goes by merit and not time in service. You could be what we called a water walker and be zapped up to Major relatively quickly, or you could have somebody who takes longer to get there. Hope this helps. |

What era, though? Because at one time, you could buy your commissions and promotions, and gentlemen could go higher faster than the poor (too many Sharpe novels, but, hey, they had their accurate points).

Modern day- UNIT, actually. I'm assuming that they follow similar ranks as the Army, without really having anything to base that on... basically, I'm trying to figure out if it's likely/possible that Magambo would have been a Second Lieutenant five years ago.

British military might be different (and the Army/UNIT ranks would be as well, I think).

From what I gathered from the Wiki article, the British officer ranks go Second Lieutenant, Lieutenant, Captain, Major... but I can't find any reference for a rough timeframe or the like.
