I am one of the firm belief that the Jack/Doctor love is all one-sided (and by that, I mean, all on Jack's side) but I am willing to read Jack/Doctor fics if the writer really makes it work.
However, in so many fics, Jack often calls the Doctor 'Doc' and I can't remember him ever saying that anywhere in any episode. Did I miss it? Or did the fans just come up with that and everyone seemed to latch on. I don't particularly like Jack's use of 'Doc' - it feels off to me, Jack always seems to be a bit more formal with the Doctor, more respectful.
Any Jack/Doctor fans out there? Explain it to me?

I think he does, very early one (before he joined them, and was Time Agent/Conman Jack). But not later. I think when he realizes it's a name, he stops doing that.

BTW- this is all my guess, pretty much.

I agree with X-Tricks. I remember it that way, too.

Of course, it's been a while since I've seen those episodes, so I could be imagining it.

I've seen most of them recently, and it's almost always "Doctor", like XT said. And I agree with you, it seems incongruous when I see it used in fic. I would stick with "Doctor" and not "Doc" if I were you. :)

I'm also pretty sure he does it once and then doesn't once he gets more of a clue. And that makes sense, because it's a stand-in for people coming new to DW. Like you can't call it Dr. Who, but you have to learn that.

Ok I was checking this site which has transcripts for the DW episodes http://who-transcripts.atspace.com/ and Jack calls the Doctor Mr Spock initially (after Rose tells him that is his name) and then it isn't until The Doctor Dances that he calls him Doc when they are running through the hospital. The next time he refers to the Doctor is when he is back on his ship and talking over the radio to Rose and the Doctor and he calls him 'Doctor'. So he called him it once and that seems to be it.

i still don't much care for jack calling him 'doc' in fics though
