Mother: Margaret Jane Sterne (nee Bertram), Countess of Essex - Born 1754.
Brother: Richard Bartholomew Sterne, the 8th Earl of Essex – Born 1773, (single).
Sister: Jane Thomasine Middleton (nee Sterne) - Born 1776, (married to Percival Middleton, Esquire).

Nephew: Sebastian Anthony Middleton – Born 1799.

Aunt: Matilda Grace Wriothesley (nee Bertram), Viscountess Delamere - Born 1756 (married to James Wriothesley, Viscount Delamere).
Maternal Cousin: Helena Caroline Wriothesley - Born 1793.

BACKGROUND:
In August the twelfth, year 1784, Thomas was born to Lord and Lady Sterne, whose first and only son had been recognized to be mentally challenged (though even today this is kept as secretive as possible). Hence, as young Thomas grew older, his intelligence and enthusiasm became the light of hope in the dark melancholic life of his parents, who in turn attended to his needs far more than that of his elder siblings.

Nevertheless, Thomas’ life soon lost its splendor when his father died due to a severe heart attack in 1793. It was only after that unfortunate event that the family learned of the Earl’s bankruptcy because of heavy gambling. Soon after, Thomas’ sister was married off to a rich widowed merchant who kindly agreed to pay the deceased Earl's debts - thus saving the family estate and lands in Essex, not to mention their reputation - and accommodated Lady Margaret and the new Earl of Essex in his London mansion. Thomas, however, was sent to live with his father’s wealthy uncle, the retired Colonel Sterne.

On the request of the Colonel, at the age of seventeen Thomas attended the university of Oxford to study law; yet, he dropped out after a year and a half of studying on account of his ‘not being able to tolerate the stupidly of the professors and fellow students’, though it is rumored that a duel had been involved. Later on he joined the royal army to test his luck in the battlefields and to satiate his desire for power and violence. It is almost seven years (during which he has spent his time in England as well as a few other countries) that he has served in the army where he has the rank of Captain in the second Battalion of the 47th Regiment of Foot.

Now, after being given leave due to receiving an injury in the Peninsular battle of Barrosa, Thomas has returned home to England.

PHYISICAL APPEARANCE:
Thomas has a dark enigmatic look about him, with an almost black hair and eyes of the same color. His attire is always ‘a la mode’, following the newest fashion of the day, though he often dresses in military style. Thomas is noticeably tall and benefits from a well-built stature which he has obtained as a result of hours of horse-back riding and fencing. He has a war scar on his chest, extending to his abdomen. A prominent feature in Thomas' appearance is his excellent teeth.

PERSONALITY:
Thomas is a practical and ambitious man with a strain of iniquity about him. He has frequently been described as an arrogant and sometimes an uncaring individual, yet he has proven to be quite generous to and protective of those for whom he bears affection. Profiting from a good sense of humor and wit, Thomas tends to be popular in the circle of his friends, but quite the contrary when it comes to his enemies and rivals.
He is quick to anger and generally mistrustful, especially of women. He is nonetheless a libertine and considers ‘seducing and being seduced’ one of the ultimate joys of life. When it comes to obtaining the object of his desire, he usually shows signs of impatience, but in truth he can wait a long time if he thinks it's worth it. He can hardly refuse any challenge, unless he has a very strong reason to do so.
Due to certain circumstances in his life, and because of his experiences in the army, Thomas has developed a hedonistic taste for life, and believes in the Carpe Diem philosophy. He is very passionate and enjoys everything in their most extreme sense. He takes pleasure in rebelling against the existing laws of society - reasoning that they are too far-fetched compared to laws of nature - and admires those who have the same tendency.

Thomas’ hobbies include: gambling (for which he is usually in debt), riding, hunting, fencing, drinking and attending social gatherings. Although not an artist or a musician, he is an art appreciator and has a particular regard for music, especially opera. Thomas’ other interests are: literature, philosophy and history. He has at times written some pieces of poetry, but he rarely mentions it.
