Haha, Rose, I totally agree re: Juliet/Julianne, or as I have come to think of their relationship, The Battle of the Jules.

Oooh, catchy. Whenever these two actually have their epic showdown, we should call their thread that...wink.gif

I've been on a BNL kick for days, now. Sort of.

Despite the anachronisms, an overall fitting theme for Rebecca's life:

I Live With It Every Day (not great quality, alas...)

On August first, nineteen-eighty-one
I cycled to Scott's house with a BB gun
We were almost twelve, but we looked thirteen
He had baby-blue eyes that I shot him between
Nature provides for us a safety net
Whatever we do, we can never forget

I live with it every day
Even though we moved away
Our yesterdays are on a loop;
A marathon of heartbreaking moments
I live with it every day
For every step I have to pay
The only thing that they can't take:
The guilt that spirals in my wake

The day they found me asleep on the floor
Engine running, closed garage door
Was the day the For Sale sign arrived on the lawn
Two weeks later, and we were gone
Everyone falls through time and the funnel it makes
But I'm staying here inside my biggest mistake

I live with it every day
Even though we moved away
Our yesterdays are on a loop;
A marathon of heartbreaking moments
I live with it every day
For every step I have to pay
The only thing that they can't take:
The guilt that spirals in my wake

The love I put away
Like games that children play
The hearts you choose to break
Like cars dumped in the lake
The laugh lines on your face
The life I won't embrace
The cold house I won't leave
The guests I won't receive

I live with it every day
Even though we moved away
Our yesterdays are on a loop;
A marathon of heartbreaking moments
I live with it every day
For every step I have to pay
The only thing that they can't take:
The guilt that spirals in my wake

I found something to procrastinate with after all.

This beautiful piece by Gordon Lightfoot could really apply to any number of LL characters, but I like to think of it as Phillip's song.

Softly

Softly she comes
Whispers the breeze with her passing
In secret love she is laughing
Softly she comes in the night

Softly she sighs
Sweetly she lies never sleeping
Her fragrance all in my keeping
Softly she comes in the night

Down the darkened hall
I hear her footsteps on my stair
And she is in my arms once more

Then softly she goes
Her shining lips in the shadows
Whisper goodbye at my window
Softly she goes in the dawn

Oh Gordon... <3

When my parents were newlyweds and my Dad's work kept them apart for months at a time, he'd always play Song for a Winter's Night for her when he came home.

Also Black Day in July is *the* underrated protest song of the era.

George and Julianne's theme song: Oh Happy We from Candide. Watch from about 4.40 to see Kristin Chenoworth as Cunegonde!

Candide: Soon, when we feel we can afford it, we'll build a modest little farm.
Cunegonde: We'll buy a yacht and live aboard it, rolling in luxury and stylish charm.
Candide: Cows and chickens.
Cunegonde: Socail whirls.
Candide: Peas and cabbage.
Cunegonde: Ropes of pearls!
Candide: Soon, there'll be little ones beside us. We'll have a sweet Westphalian home.
Cunegonde: Somehow, we'll grow as rich as Midas. We'll live in Paris when we're not in Rome.
Candide: Smiling babies.
Cunegonde: Marble halls.
Candide: Sunday picnis.
Cunegonde: Costume balls. Oh, won't my robes of silk and satin be chic? I'll have all that I desire.
Candide: Pangloss will tutor us in latin and greek while we sit before the fire.
Cunegonde: Glowing rubies.
Candide: Glowing logs.
Cunegonde: Faithful servants.
Candide: Faithful dogs.
Cunegonde: We'll round the world, enjoying high life - all bubbly pink champagne and gold.
Candide: We'll lead a rustic and a shy life, feeding the pigs and sweetly growing old.
Cunegonde: Breast of peacock.
Candide: Apple pie.
Cunegonde: I love marriage.
Candide: So do I.
Cunegonde: Oh, happy pair. Oh, happy we. It's very rare how we agree.
Cunegonde: (overlapping) Oh, happy pair. Oh, happy we. It's very rare how we agree. Oh, happy pair. Oh, happy we. It's very
rare how we agree.
Candide: (overlapping) Oh, happy pair. Oh, happy we. It's very rare how we agree. Oh, happy pair. Oh, happy we. It's very
rare how we agree.

So I was idly chatting with my friend about my characters the other day (bless her heart for humouring me with this,) while fiddling with some music. Then, out of nowhere--

Me: "Y'know, aside from a few certain lines, the lyrics for My Heart Will Go On," (if taken WAY out of context,) "could really work as a retrospective Rebecca/Richard themesong from Becca's point of view. He was her only love, after all. And she loved him hugely. And that just doesn't go away."
Friend: *thinks about it* "That's pretty sick."
Me: "Exactly."

Ahaha finally dug out my old Les Miz CDs why didn't I ever think of I Dreamed a Dream before, for Rebecca? Her man done her wrong, so very wrong. There are probably a bajillion songs that could be hers.

It took all the strength I had not to fall apart! Though I've tried hard to mend the pieces of my broken heart. And I spent oh, so many nights just feelin' sorry for myself, I used to cry...but now I hold my head up high--only not really. Kind of the opposite, in fact.

Viola and Olivia's theme song: Sisters by the Puppini Sisters

Especially the lines:

Those who've seen us know that not a thing could come between us.
Many men have tried to split us up, but no one can.
Lord help the mister who comes between me and my sister,
And Lord help the sister, who comes between me and my man!

Yeah...

And I've just been listening to Pink Martini's new album while discussing Geoffrey and Viola with Shar on IM and the title song Spendor in the Grass struck me as a potential future Viola/Geoffrey song, or at least Viola->Geoffrey. Depending on how things go.

I can see you're thinking, baby,
I've been thinking too
about the way we used to be
and how to start anew.

Maybe I'm a hopeless dreamer,
maybe I've got it wrong,
but I'm going where the grass is green
if you'd like to come along.

Back when I was starting out
I always wanted more
but every time I got it
I still felt just like before.

Fortune is a fickle friend.
I'm tired of chasing fate
and when I look into your eyes
I know you feel the same.

All these years of living large
are starting to do us in.
I won't say it wasn't fun,
but now it has to end.

Life is moving oh so fast.
I think we should take it slow,
rest our heads upon the grass
and listen to it grow.

Going where the hills are green
and the cars are few and far,
days are full of splendor
and at night you can see the stars.

Life's been moving oh so fast.
I think we should take it slow,
rest our heads upon the grass
and listen to it grow.
