BACKGROUND: There was nothing extraordinary about Basil’s birth. As the third child of a respectable tailor in London, he was neither spoiled nor starved. He grew up in a crowded family and while this helped him learn how to share his belongings, it also made him realise the value of wealth and personal possessions. Basil exhibited his interest in painting in early childhood, and his talent was recognized by a friend of his father’s, who suggested taking the boy under his apprenticeship. With two sons to help him with the family business, Basil’s father stated his approval of the suggestion quite willingly. Basil worked hard and improved his skills with the help of his Master and at the age of sixteen he was accepted at the Royal Academy as a student, where he studied under Benjamin West.
It was during one of his trips to the county of Essex, where he travelled with the purpose of practicing his skill in capturing the different moods of the sea, when he was discovered by the Marquess of Avening. The latter soon became Basil’s patron and helped him gain a bit of fame and fortune by introducing him to his small circle of friends. Although very grateful to Lord Avening, Basil is hoping to find another patron who is more sociable, hence he has come back to London to obtain one.
PHYISICAL APPEARANCE: Basil is not a particularly good looking man and he is aware of it. He has small dark eyes, dark brown hair and a long, narrow face. He used to be a very pale child, but after spending hours painting outside he has gained a little colour. He is of average height and weight. His clothes are not very fashionable, but they are neat.
PERSONALITY: Basil’s favourite subject for painting is nature, and he has been told that his landscapes are brilliant. Nevertheless, he occupies himself mostly with painting portraits, believing that there is more profit in that field. He is very honest, hardworking and rather stingy, with a strong practical side to him that is in constant conflict with his artistic sentiments. Basil has learned to twist the truth on the canvas when painting portraits of eminent personages; however, he has no talent for telling verbal lies. Even so, he is not rude or blunt, and when he feels he cannot speak the truth, he either changes the subject or becomes awkwardly silent. He is not very good with words; nor has he any skill at making jokes, but he laughs heartily whenever he hears one, especially if he is drunk – which can happen very easily since he is not used to drinking a lot. Sometimes he envies the nobility for their many privileges, but if asked whether he prefers to be a Peer’s son with no painting talent or stay as he is, he cannot come up with an answer even if he is given a day to think about it.
His hobbies are: Painting and… just painting. He doesn’t have much time for hobbies, entertainments or romance. He is content with immortalizing these themes on the canvas and become famous for it.
