FAMILY
Father: Sir John Devenish 1761-1807 Mother: Lady Fanny Devenish (b. 1767) Brother: Sir William Devenish (b. 1786)
BACKGROUND The Devenish family of Apple Brook is old and used to be wealthy and respected. Years of bad luck and bad management have meant that the estate is now a small one, with only one farm and not much money. The late Sir John was a confirmed gambler and drinker and brought the estate almost to ruin. Fortunately perhaps he died in a bar room brawl before he could completely bankrupt the family. The new Sir William, being a cautious and responsible young man, is now doing his best to improve their fortunes but money is still tight.
Charlie was brought up always knowing he was the younger son, and shirking responsibility. He was spared from being involved in the financial problems of his family and had a happy childhood. Apple Brook adjoins the estate of the Earl of Rotherham and he and Will grew up with the Fitzgerald children, close as siblings. As time passed, Will and Lady Olivia Fitzgerald grew closer and it is possible that they might marry in the future. Charlie has never had any romantic interest in either of the girls: he is too much in awe of Viola, and treats Olivia as a little sister.
After Sir John's death, it seemed like there would not be enough money to see Charlie through university, but he was supported by Lord Rotherham and studied Theology at Oxford. He graduated the previous year and hopes to take orders this summer. The Earl has sent him to London to give him some worldly experience. That his daughter Lady Viola is there to keep an eye on him is a happy coincidence. Of course, Charlie sees it more as having been sent to keep an eye on Viola himself.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION Charlie's sunny personality shines out in his face, which is nearly always smiling. He has very expressive brown eyes, wavy blond hair and a lovely, open smile. He is tall, but not lanky and will be very handsome once he has grown up properly. At the moment he is more "cute" than "dashing".
PERSONALITY Charlie is not the brightest spark in the tinder box, but his warm heart and unshakable optimism make up for it. Despite no shortage of family crises and problems he remains convinced that "everything will turn out for the best in the end" and saunters through life with a naive enjoyment of everything that comes his way, seeing each experience whether good or bad as just a part of life.
He survived Oxford without doing much work or gaining much helpful life knowledge and is eminently unsuitable to be a clergyman unless he learns some responsibilty and sense. Nevertheless, he would rather go into the church than the law or medicine, since you only have to work Sundays!
His kindness which would never intentionally hurt anybody and playful disposition make him an agreeable, if immature, companion. However, combining this with a naturally trusting nature and a complete lack of tact or knowledge of when to shut up will no doubt make him a liability in polite London society.
All the same, Charlie is not stupid. He has plenty of pride which can be offended whenever he realises he is being patronised, which quite often happens. He often feels that he would thrive on really being given responsibility and a chance to prove himself as a man, which is what he sees his London trip as about. The Earl just hopes he will grow up enough to take orders.
He has not known enough girls (apart from Viola and Olivia) to have ever fallen properly in love, though he is at the stage where every pretty girl he sees is his one true love... for about a week.

Relationships
Family
Friends Beacham, Annabelle (Betsy): They've only met a couple of times, but Charlie really likes Miss Beacham. Edgeworth, Cassandra (Francesca): Childhood friends. Was a good sport. Played with Olivia Fitzgerald. Not seen her in years. Edgeworth, Tristan (Francesca): Best friends at school. Used to stay at each other's houses during vacations. Fairmont, Marcus (Alexandra): Got to know each other through Charlie's trips to London during university. Get along well. Fitzgerald, Olivia (Rose): Childhood friend. Like a little sister. They are often far too jolly and irreverant together. Probably Charlie's best friend. Fitzgerald, Viola (Rose): A very good friend since childhood. They have an easy relationship but Charlie remains a bit in awe of Viola, who has always bossed him around. Pritchard, Blake (Lin): Blake rescued Charlie from having to buy an expensive walking cane. Very agreeable man. For this kind action he considers him a friend.
Acquaintances Buckingham, Christiana (Nadia): Introduced at ball. Thinks she seems nice but was a bit tongue tied due to her high rank. Dalrymple, Arthur (Vikki): Met briefly. Liked. Dunford, Elizabeth (Liz): Danced with her. Liked her- a straightforward, unpretentious girl. Hutchinson, Susannah (Amy): Danced with her and liked her a great deal. Made him feel at home more than the "fancier" girls. Hopkins-Lawrence, Francis (Liz): Met briefly. Seemed a good chap. Layton, Henry (Rose): Only met briefly at church. Seems friendly but a bit abrupt. Pritchard, Charity (Lin): Met briefly. Sadly Miss Hampton was with her at the time so Charlie hardly noticed her. Rutledge, John (Sara): Met briefly. Thought he was very quiet. Rutledge, Regina (Sara):: Met briefly. Inclined to approve of her as a friend of Miss Beacham. Stapleton, Geoffrey (Shar): Met at Viola's. Liked him but not really had any conversation with him. Tibbord, James (Amy): Met in Bond Street. Seemed a decent fellow, but not really good ton, you know. Tolson, Charlotte (Izzie): A most interesting and agreeable girl. Just back from India- must ask her more about it! Werlington, Daphne (Lin): Miss Beacham's chaperone. Seems very nice and friendly for a Duchess!
Love interest Hampton, Elise (Lin): Currently thinks her the most beautiful girl he's met. (Since the last most beautiful girl he met...) And she's sweet and charming and demure...
Enemies/rivals Gosling, Nicholas (Alex): Rival for Elise's affections. Probably a decent chap, but dash it... can't like him on principle!
Please don't post plotting here. If any of this information seems wrong, or if I have missed anybody off, please PM me.
