Name: Sébastien Nicolas d'Enjolras
Nickname (if applicable): Bastien, but only to his sister
Age: 23
Date of Birth: April 14, 1788
Title: Vicomte d'Enjolras

FAMILY

Father - Gustave-Vincent d'Enjolras, Comte d'Enjolras b. 1750
Mother - Belladonna Abillon d'Enjolras, Comtesse d'Enjolras b. 1760
Sister - Lady Adrienne Josephine d'Enjolras, b. 1795

BACKGROUND

Sébastien d'Enjolras was born to Gustave-Vincent and Belladonna on April 14, 1788 at their home in Normandy. His father was a politician--in fact, a deputy of the second, noble estate in the Estates General. Sensing upheaval, he and his family fled France for England soon after the August 10th Revolution in 1791 and the deposition of King Louis. After that hiccup, Sébastien's upbringing was generally happy at their rented Derbyshire estate, Wilcombe. The neighborhood was initially hesitant about a new French family, but the comte's tendency toward anti-revolutionary sentiments soon soothed over most of the initial ruffled feathers. Despite several offers to purchase Wilcombe, the owners have been rather reluctant to sell, despite their own reduced circumstances and the prosperity of the comte and his family. Nevertheless, Sébastien considers Wilcombe and Derbyshire his home.

Gustave-Vincent and Belladonna always gave the strong impression of being happily married, however, they had begun to realize they were not well-suited long before. Despite these differences, they hung in a strange sort of stasis, trying to be happy for both their own and their son's sake. After Sébastien went to school, and just before Belladonna discovered she was pregnant with their second child, a the rift grew wider until they barely spoke to one another.

Sébastien, fearing his parents would become distant towards him as they had towards on another, began to withdraw his affection from both parents. He refocused this affection onto his new baby sister, Adrienne, for whom he always had time and plenty of patience, and who always had an adoring smile for him.

He attended Eton and then Cambridge (where he specialized in natural sciences and was a great admirer of Lamarck) before returning home to prepare to take over the estate. He has indeed been to London before, but prefers the country and is as such not the most renowned of young Viscounts. He (naturally) speaks fluent French and English, excellent German, and knows his Latin passably. He is a talented swordsman with a knack for words (of all languages), but is abysmally untalented in the realms of music.

In addition to being set to inherit the title of 'Comte' upon his father's death, Sébastien is a man of more than generous means. He is not particularly close to either parent, but is very fond of his 16-year-old sister, Adrienne. She has not yet made her debut.

He has come to London for the Season because his father has asked him to find a “proper, well-behaved" wife--Bastien himself has no objection to spending some time in London, but has no intention of wife-hunting. He knows his French heritage and lack of a proper English title might put some off in the current political climate, but Bastien himself is hesitant to involve himself in politics at all and considers himself very much loyal to the King of England. At school, in trying to fit in with other people his age, he began pronouncing his given name in the English fashion and dropping the d' from his surname. He has become very adept at changing the subject and steering the conversation toward less controversial topics. Moreover, should anyone doubt his family's loyalties, a brief conversation with the comte, whose favorite name for Napoleon is "that fat, delusional Corsican," will set them straight.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

Sébastien has longish medium brown hair, blue-grey eyes, and a handsome, if a bit round, face. He has the lithe build of a swordsman, somewhat broad-shouldered and nicely-muscled, and stands at 5'10". He typically dresses well and fashionably, but doing so in subtle colors and patterns keeps him from looking the dandy. He always looks well put-together.

PERSONALITY

Sébastien is a pleasant, but serious, young man. He has the tendency to seem just a bit cold--this is the result of a hesitation to form permanent attachments, and this hesitation is a reaction to the tension between his parents. When he was seven, they, who had seemed so in love, grew so far apart as to not speak any longer. He learned that even love can be destroyed, leaving behind only unhappiness. The only person for whom he bears any real affection is his sister. He is unlikely to be affected by passing insult or injury, but should something affect him, it does so very deeply, and he will not easily forget it.

He sets great store by his honor, but it is not easily wounded. He would not under any circumstances dishonor a young lady, and believes strongly in the code of chivalry. His manners are superb, however, all of these things combine to make him seem much older than his 23 years. He is relatively serious, compared to other young men his age. His father is sometimes disappointed that his son has not taken part in the recklessness of youth, and afraid that he has not experienced all he could.

That said, he can be very charming. He bears a very French belief in fate, and enjoys hearing about a good scandal. If he does take an interest in someone, it is a very keen interest, Sébastien being a very all-or-nothing sort of man. He is serious, but not humorless. In the right mood, he can be quite amusing and quick to laugh, and he does have his light side. Above all he believes in making the most of life, it's just that up until now that's involved studying how giraffes developed such long necks. It is not an active dislike of frivolity or amusement that has kept him from being more youthful, rather a naturally calm and serious disposition. He can be enticed to act in a manner more befitting of a young man in his position.

Sébastien has a tendency to over-think things. He dwells, broods, and revisits issues in his mind until he comes to a conclusion. If a conclusion cannot be reached, he gathers more information. In the messy realms of emotion, this scientific approach does not work, and as such he has avoided becoming entangled in strong emotions altogether.
