My Name: Aida Age: 24 E-mail: luna_ida@yahoo.com Where'd you find us: I have other characters here. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name: Jane Thomasine Middleton (nee Sterne) Age: 34 Date of Birth: 9th September, 1776 Title: Lady
FAMILY: Father: Henry Nigel Sterne, the 7th Earl of Essex - Born 1744, deceased. Mother: Margaret Jane Sterne (nee Bertram), Countess of Essex - Born 1754. Brother: Richard Bartholomew Sterne, the 8th Earl of Essex – Born 1773. Brother: Thomas Edmund Sterne, Captain – Born 1784.
Husband: Percival John Middleton, Esquire – Born 1765. Daughter: Rebecca Florence Middleton – Born 1797. Son: Sebastian Anthony Middleton – Born 1799. Step-Daughter: Lucy Bridget Griffith (nee Middleton) – Born 1786, (married to Robert Griffith).
Father’s uncle: Neville Alfred Sterne, Colonel - Born 1728.
Aunt: Matilda Grace Wriothesley (nee Bertram), Viscountess Delamere - Born 1756 (married to James Wriothesley, Viscount Delamere). Maternal Cousin: Helena Caroline Wriothesley - Born 1793.
BACKGROUND: Since her birth, Jane profited from all the education and comfort that a lady of her station could desire for. She proved to be an excellent student with a thirst for adventure and knowledge, and assertive enough to ask for a replacement in her tutors whenever she deemed them not as competent as she liked them to be. Richard became Jane’s favourite family member as soon as she learned to show affection and the responsibility that she later on obtained through caring for her brother resulted in her becoming a very dependable and mature young woman much sooner than her contemporaries; attributes which helped her a lot when disaster struck at the root of their family. Lord Essex’s untimely death was a great shock to the family; yet its impact was greatly diminished compared to the news regarding the family’s bankruptcy due to the Earl’s excessive gambling debts. From that time onwards, Jane’s life plunged into confusion and instability, while the dowager countess strived to keep their poverty a secret and fend off the debtors. Soon after, she felt herself under the constant pressure of having to decide whether she should accept the proposal of an extremely wealthy perfume merchant, who was a middle-class widower, or to elope with her secret beloved (a gentleman whose family was a close friend of theirs but would not consent to their marriage because of their financial problems) and let the family drown in scandal and doom. Of course, the seventeen year old Jane chose the former course of action and married Percival Middleton, who in turn agreed to settle all their debts and rescued not only their lands, but also their reputation. The first three years of Jane’s marriage passed by in utter lack of tender displays from her side, while the on the other hand her husband tried his best to win her affection by buying her a variety of expensive gifts, and by acting very nicely towards Richard. As time went by, gradually Jane learned to like Percival – though, she never truly came to love him – and even accepted to take Lucy, his daughter from his first wife, under her wings and teach her what a lady should know; later on arranging her marriage to another merchant’s son. After Rebecca and Sebastian were born, the upbringing of her children in the best way possible became Jane’s primary goal and she is still trying to fulfil it with the precision of the perfectionist that she is. Throughout the recent years her life has remained a tranquil one, except on the occasions when her younger brother’s actions temporarily disturb the smooth surface of her life.
PHYISICAL APPEARANCE: Jane is a rather beautiful woman with dark hair and languid eyes; though, the apathy in her gaze and the severity which hangs about her features make her quite unapproachable. Standing at 5’4” she is considered to be quite tall, and her figure possesses an elegant leanness that is quite admirable and which she owes to her perpetual activeness. Jane takes great care to keep her complexion pale and her gowns stylish. She prefers darker tones to the lighter ones.
PERSONALITY: Friends and family both recognize Jane as a very logical and reasonable person, on whose objective judgment and helpful nature they can rely. Nevertheless, strangers might find her somewhat aloof and cold, with the tendency to be resolutely indifferent. The truth is Jane has a kind heart but finds it quite hard to trust in people she doesn’t know; even so, she is extremely polite and never steps out of the boundaries of social propriety. Jane is very conservative and has a strong sense of ethics. She wholeheartedly admits her dislike gambling and tries her best to keep her family away from such activities. She also has a very strong maternal instinct which sometimes gets out of hand and turns her into an overly controlling individual, who feels responsible for taking decisions for everyone around her and is easily devastated if her decisions fail her or are not accepted. Although she never admits it, she prides herself for being the saviour of her family and sometimes hints towards this fact. She often tries to hide her love of adventure, although sometimes it can be deduced from her words and actions. In truth, when younger, Jane used to be very ambitious, yet with the passing of years her ambitions have turned from wanting to become an admiral (age five), to acquiring academic education (age eight), to travelling around the world with Richard(age ten), to becoming a famous writer (age thirteen), to marrying for love (age sixteen), to raising her offspring excellently (age twenty three), and finally to leading a quiet and proper life (age thirty four) – although she has maintained her love of the sea. Jane’ hobbies include: playing the piano-forte, educating her daughter and her son, reading political and religious pamphlets, embroidery, horse-back riding, hunting, painting watercolour landscapes and seascapes, hosting receptions, collecting china and silverware, playing chess and checkers, designing and attending to her flower gardens, participating in charity work and visiting friends, one of the closest of whom is Lady Worth.
