A photo taken in early 1916 (probably at Royal/Collins Barracks) of B Coy 10th Battalion RDF.

My grandfather is in the photo, and has added a few names of others. Anybody spot an ancestor?

Having now transcribed the 10th Battalion War Diaries, I have discovered that this Company photograph is an interesting example of the short life expectancy of a junior officer on the Somme.

The photo is taken before the Battalion left for France in August 1916, and by Feb 1917, all the officers in the photo were no longer with the Battalion.

2/Lt W J Mount - taken prisoner by the Germans on 13 Oct 1916

Capt L S N Palmer - evacuated to England on 23 Oct 1916

Major DOM Leahy - evacuated sick to England 27 Nov 1916

2/Lt C W Grant - evacuated sick to England Feb 1917
