Title: Where do I start?
Description: Search for Grandfathers service record

murfinthecountry - April 16, 2009 08:30 AM (GMT)
I am just starting out on a mission to trace my grandfathers service in the First World War. He is believed to have served in the RDF but that is the only information that is available at this time. So where do I start? Any help would be appreciated. :D

Hello,

If you log on to nationalarchives.gov.uk, you can search the military section.

The more info you have the better, like name, regiment or regimental number, dates etc.

Hope this helps, good luck

Terence.

Hello
I have just traced details of my grandfather who was in the RDF. I posted a message on the Great War forum, the members were very helpful, and found his details on Ancestry for me. I then joined Ancestry for free, for a two week trial period, and was able to find all his service records, although they were in bad shape, (there was a direct hit on the office where the records were stored during the blitz and only 40% were salvaged). I also found his medal index card on Ancestry, and discovered which medals he was awarded.
best of luck
