OMG! I don't want to be a killjoy or a villain but as I am writing this post, I'm thinking of voting a 'no.' Why? Because of the following reasons (more of worries):
1. If we add a shoutbox, there is a tendency that people might start ignoring the threads (esp those under The Lounge) thus the death of the forum;
2. Are there enough people willing to chat and keep it alive? As in do members have time to stay and keep the conversation going besides saying hi, hello, how are you & goodbye? I've seen a shoutbox in a forum bigger than us in terms of number of members but only 3-4 people "talked" in it and it looked like it died instantly;
2b. I could see myself doing a monologue. (Unless of course a lot of you are willing to stay and chat)
3. I feel (excuse me for being subjective) that the shoutbox will not be long term fun. It might even make us sick of each other after a while which I never want to happen;
4. I bet no one will dare vote a 'no' so just to have someone on the opposition's side, I say no. :ph43r:
As I end this, I'm slowly getting confused, changing my mind and feeling I should abstain because I do know it can be a lot of fun. I can't totally shake off my doubts though.
I'm confident the 'yes votes' would win anyway so I'm sticking to my 'no' vote. Sorry people, don't hate me. I love everybody and I do like to have a constant chat with you all but not in a shoutbox. EDIT: Maybe I do but I already voted so sorry.
:ph43r: :ph43r:  :ph43r:   :ph43r:

Good points Speedy :)
I don't hate you... how could anyone hate anyone here?
Hmm... I'm thinking that you're right.. I see now the disadvantages.
Now I'm not so sure anymore if it was a good suggestion.
Thanks for enlightening us :)

I will 100% want a shoutbox if it will encourage more people to stay online.
I have a question to Omega though, will this cost you money? If it will, then I stick to my vote because we are yet uncertain of the outcome. If it's free then maybe we can give it a try. To me, unless at least 50% of the total members agrees (and commit themselves), it could be a waste of effort (and possibly money).
Let's see how many people will vote. Those who abstain mean they're not interested in having one.
CrazyBat - September 22, 2006 12:27 PM (GMT)
oh.. Omega..
if it will cost you money then I would like to change my vote to NO.. :o
Because it would not be worth it.
Omega6 - September 22, 2006 12:40 PM (GMT)
No, it won't cost any money... :)
I'll go ahead and get one prepared depending on what everybody decides... ;)
iggy_killer - September 22, 2006 02:12 PM (GMT)
i think it will make people stay more often..cause usually when i come here i post once or twice and tahts it cause i have nothing else to post..so if we have a shoutbox i can stay a chat to the other people..and then if anything else comes up...ill go post
CrazyBat - September 23, 2006 02:22 AM (GMT)
ok.. then I keep my yes omega :)
To the other people who are members here.. please put your vote too.
Thanks :)
Speedy - September 23, 2006 02:30 AM (GMT)
amazingly, we have 6 votes out of 123 views.
WAAAAAAAAA!!!!
::runs away::
Omega6 - September 23, 2006 02:32 AM (GMT)
Well, I think that this poll is going to go down like this. A 2/3 majority must be in favor of a shoutbox in order to get one. The catch is, it has to be 2/3 of the total member count of the board. ;)
Feel free to claim that this is unfair... :P
CrazyBat - September 23, 2006 02:53 AM (GMT)
the others probably haven't seen this thread/poll yet... maybe in a week or so we'll have a vote of 2/3
Speedy - September 23, 2006 03:20 AM (GMT)
Uh, now 157 views. I don't believe only the 5 of us consumed those views. And have you not noticed that we have a ghost voter? Only 5 people talking but 6 voted.... hmm. Anyway, that doesn't matter as long as the members VOTE. Maybe we should add an "I don't care" button.
But omega, how about trimming it down to 51%?

I don't know...
We have 30 members right now, so 20 votes for yes will do it. If anyone else joins the number won't rise. So 20 yes votes and we'll get one. ;)
Plus...half seems to be just as unobtainable as two-thirds... :D
CrazyBat - September 23, 2006 03:31 AM (GMT)
those 157 views were all me :D ;) :P
Speedy - September 23, 2006 03:34 AM (GMT)

*dies*
(omega, i want a "rolling on the floor" smiley!)
Omega6 - September 23, 2006 03:36 AM (GMT)
We do...I need to steal the yahoo smilies.... :D
(or at least fix these)

I was the other one that voted speedy. :P
Speedy - September 23, 2006 10:45 AM (GMT)
Oh good. I was beginning to think that this forum is haunted!
And as of this post, notice the 66.6% :o :ph43r:

Drakun - September 23, 2006 12:49 PM (GMT)
it just works. i don't know how now. it has never ruined any forum that i've seen and it doesn't need that much transfer.
kqckqc - September 24, 2006 12:10 AM (GMT)
Yes.
Why?
Because I think it's worth to give it a try. We can always remove it if we don't like it.
CrazyBat - September 25, 2006 03:06 AM (GMT)
2:7... hmmm.. :D likey likey
incubi37 - September 25, 2006 04:37 AM (GMT)
Here's the thing, folks. Every forum in existence has chatting, but it generally happens in between the REAL topics. In this case, everything is so neatly laid out that nobody will want to carry on normal conversation in the level threads, so none will exist. There wasn't much action in the general forum thread, so maybe putting up one for normal chat would help get people talking like in the other forum (which I barely knew, but still liked).
And stick with the 2/3 majority. No sense in POing half the population if they don't want it. btw, I'm vote number 8, and liking the numbers so far.
Melody Kitn - September 25, 2006 05:07 AM (GMT)
Definitely think that if we do use a shoutbox, there's gotta be some modicum of rules..
I might sound like a kill joy.. but I have been in a forum where the shoutbox became the house of drama...
i.e.
- No Riddle Talks (answers, hints, cheat, or anything so blatant... we do have the forums for that, and the last thing people need to see are spoilers of any sort, accident or not)
- Keep It Tasteful (Just pretend someone's kid is just around the corner and might read it.. or be good about not saying what you don't like to hear yourself)
- Respect Others (Jokes can be very one sided... depending on what they're based on or who they're aimed at.. taunting, teasing, whatever... just try not to do it... some people can be easily offended and that's not what we're here for)
- Keep In Mind... Lag (If you've got people still running 56k lines.. and you've got 20 bajillion animated gifs [assuming the shoutbox enables them]... there'll be considerably less visits from folks like me.. who if I'm able to get in on work computers.. won't be able to load more than a certain amount of animated stuff)
- Keep The Forums Alive (Just because we can chat doesn't mean the rest of the forums should die off...)
Oh.. and I miss you guys
CrazyBat - September 25, 2006 06:00 AM (GMT)
is that a yes or a no mel?
Hey speedy... she said no teasing hehe.. sounds like what you said on the intro thread is illegal hehe :P
Speedy - September 25, 2006 06:21 AM (GMT)
i fixed your color. hehehe. actually, that isn't the right color but i forgot what the right one was. did you want that hidden? sorry if not. i can put it back.
yeah, but that was for the shoutbox.
CrazyBat - September 25, 2006 06:46 AM (GMT)
you already read it so it's ok.. it was just to deemphasize it a bit hehe.. (not really hidding but that's ok)
Speedy - September 25, 2006 07:01 AM (GMT)
sorry, i put it back anyways. it won't happen again. ;)
woot! 10:2
omega, get to work!
:)) :)) :))
CrazyBat - September 25, 2006 07:29 AM (GMT)
oh omega!! hehe wake up :D
speedy no prob :D
rhpk - September 25, 2006 10:25 AM (GMT)
I've never done a shoutbox or the likes, but it sounds interesting. So I'm voting yes more out being curious.
Omega6 - September 25, 2006 12:43 PM (GMT)
I see that you are making some progress, Crazybat... :P
Red_Hawk - September 25, 2006 04:23 PM (GMT)
I voted yes, cos things would be easier in a way xD I mean, easier to help people out :)
Bellypock - September 25, 2006 05:17 PM (GMT)
I voted yes, even though I tend not to use them and leave posts or PMs. It's a nice thing to have around if you happen to catch people online. I've seen boards where everyone uses the shoutbox and no one posts, but I think with this one there is enough going on in the posts (hints, etc.), that people will tend to use them as well instead of only using the shoutbox. Just my $0.02
AvonPaintball - September 25, 2006 10:05 PM (GMT)
I run my own Invision Free forum, and tried a shoutbox, and I found it to be very annoying. It caused the page to take several seconds to load, and bogged everything down. I also found the Invision Free shoutbox to be quite buggy. It would consistently lose posts or never even post them in the first place. Therefore I vote 'no'.
If you want a 'chat' feature, I recommend you create a permanent one on an Instant Messaging service. (Preferably AOL IM.) I have also provided this on my Invision Free forum (as a link), and found it to be a success.
CrazyBat - September 26, 2006 12:04 AM (GMT)
yikes!!
true true avon.. it might slow things down..
oh omega.. i see you're awake hehe :D
judyg8or - September 26, 2006 11:07 AM (GMT)
I voted yes - even though I have never used shoutboxes on other sites, what's the harm??
As long as it is used for chit chat and not for getting help with riddles...
Omega6 - September 27, 2006 01:47 AM (GMT)
Uh-oh...18 votes... -_-
Just to make sure everyone is on the same page...the shoutbox will NOT be for hints or help...just nonsense. ;)
