The sniff test refers to the actual emissions test. And a cat has a tube from the smog pump that injects fresh air into it and helps take care of the unburnt gas to reduce emissions. Without a cat, you would just have a little louder exhaust and you would smell the fumes a bit more. Just dont overthink it. Its not hard, remove the damn thing and place a slip pipe with band clamps. It'll take you 30 minutes with a sawzall.

Why don't you just save up and do a catback w/this as well...just a thought.
