| QUOTE (Oblivion2610 @ Jun 14 2009, 05:33 PM) | THis game isnt that bad, for the price ($22 for an army>:)), i may just play if we can gather a group of 4 people. Oh, and Ken, please dont judge b4 u try, and please dont hate on W'hammer 40k players because it is what has shifted many SWM players to 40k. Just a request. |
Well that's just it, is it? The idea where Star Wars Miniatures shifts to Warhammer 40k is a big problem, causing games like Star Wars Miniatures to deteriorate. The fact is, Star Wars minis originated from Warhammer 40k, and it made it easier, and watered down so it would maintain a unique balanced system. I hate Warhammer for 1 reason that many people choose to spend more money to that game and leaving Star Wars neglected, eating dust. Why do I feel this way? Well if people start to play Warhammer, then what's the point in playing Star Wars? But I guess if those who are really Star Wars fans, should consider Star Wars miniatures, after all, it's made for fans to get attuned with newer characters from the SW universe. If there are more people having interest both Warhammer and Star Wars, I wouldn't have a problem.... but SW players will face many empty seats since the game isn't quite popularized yet.

Okay, you have one small discrepency in your history, sw minis stemed from d+d minis. Star wars is absolutly not based off of the 40k system. and no, you dont hate wh40k, you strongly dislike it. the system is watered down, yes, but it isnt a bad system. In some ways, SWM is a more expensive game. lets look at this example: A person is looking at either buying a wh40k starter set or a swm starter set. the wh40k starter set includes: - 2 450 point armies (over 60 minis total) -paint set -brushes -1 scatter and a few d6. -rulebook -starter book -blast/flamer templates -painting instructions guide -costs $70 the swm starter set includes: -1 map double sided map -2 small squads (6 minis in total) -1 d20 -starter book -rulebook -character cards -costs $15 okay, seems that sw has a cheaper strater set, but has less content. lets say the player wants to finish off his/her wh40k space marine force. all the player has to buy is 2 boxes of inffantry and a support vehicle, about $100. The star wars player, however, may need to continue buying booster packs to build a tournament ready list. this may cost from $40-$120. You are really trying your luck if you buy only boosters FOR THEY ARE ALL RANDOM . Oh wait, the Store has some singles, but they cost a pretty penny, about $10-$60 (!!!). For 40k, you already know what you are getting in a box, so you dont take the risk of being disapointed/ wasting money on minis you may not use. You be the judge, but that is how i see it. Well... you have struck an interesting point in a buying perspective in terms of Star Wars Miniatures vs Warhammer 40k. However, let's break down the most obvious: D&D miniatures did came out before SWM... but before D&D miniatures, what makes the game innovative and engaging? The D20 system, and that's where Warhammer 40k and original D&D all adapted from. Now this is all base on my knowledge and understanding, which is why I pointed out where Warhammer 40k is like the father of miniatures such as Star Wars. Now as for your 2nd comment about comparison on boosters purchased... you pointed out how much it is to spend to create a squad for Warhammer 40k alone is about $100. Now what about the paints, accessories and time to create it all into a dynamic squad? With commitment into Warhammer 40k, it's always good to see your work in action and how much time you've spent being committed to your squad build. But that alone is no comparison to Star War Miniatures, because not many people would like to skip out of their committed work of 40k and then shift it down to SWM. So like I said, when people go to Warhammer 40k, they usually stick with Warhammer 40k and leaving SWM and D&D miniatures gaming out on the dust. Star Wars miniatures, as you've pointed out is expensive... but that alone is about the same as you would spend on Warhammer 40k isn't it? When you build a squad, when do you feel it's ever enough to improve that squad? You don't know, but because for every gamer that gets into such hobbies and games want to become better and competitive players, spending X amount of $$ is irrelevant. So you can't say Star Wars Miniatures is more expensive than Warhammer 40k... Now to choose certain Star Wars miniatures in order to create a formidable squad, you don't have to force yourself in buying a pack just to get certain figure(s), you can pretty much buy singles online, from miniaturemarket, alterrealitygames, etc or even trade online to players on WOTC forums and bloomilk.com.... People are not required to keep spending on boosters to play for Star Wars Miniatures, once they know their squad is perfected on a particular faction and squad points (150pt-200pt), I'm sure they'll keep it the way it is without spending additional $$. It's not like MTG where you have to spend on newer boosters that corresponds to T2 format. So the point I'm trying to make is.... money is not the issue to get into certain game... it's the game that makes the players interested or not, and the fact where people who got into the game, sometimes feel that they have no reason to change that hobby to something lesser.
