I'm pretty sure this is the first time in a long time that Jeff has skated two clean programs in a competition. My mother and I were very surprised because he always seems to fall apart in at least one of his programs.

I'm happy for Jeff (despite his lack of quads), but seriously there has to be some sort of point reward for completing quad jumps. Otherwise, it's total not worth it. I think that the quad is what pushes the sport forward rather than relying on the classic trip-trip combinations.

But since the scoring system is still relatively new and constantly being changed, I guess we'll have to wait and see whether the judges choose to reward the quad more points.

Out of curiousity, do you think that any time in future there will be quintuple jumps? Is this actually possible? Physically?

I don't think there is a possibility for a 5-rotational jump in the near future. The quad is already on the physical edge.

I agree that this sport has been taken to a new level with the quad and this is certainly a good thing but somehow I'm still worrying about how the tecnical difficulty on the jumps is pushed. I like watching whole programs, performances that are not only about the elements. Anyway, I'm okay with the quad although I almost everytime close my eyes when the commentators annouce something like "he has planned a quad right here..."! :rolleyes:

Most likely it will be done - someday. Athletes love to push the envelope.

In an interview Evan said that 5 rotations is the most the human body can do - according to the laws of physics. He wants to be the first one - and said at the end "I will do it!"

The very idea of all the falls it'll take before it happens makes me shudder!!

Regarding the quintable jumps... in the near future I don't see people actually jumping them in competition. If jumps were a separate section where you just go and show the jumps you're capable of, than perhaps it would be possible. But we all see how hard it is to put a new jump in a program. It's much more difficult.

I think most likely you're right about this. Adding to a program is a whole different "ball game."

During supper, I finally had the time to run through my copy of the March edition of the magazine Patinage which features an interview with Stephane Lambiel. To my suprize, there is a question to him about this very topic we were talking about in this thread in the past days. Here is an excerpt:

That is a very interesting reponse from Stephane. I do think it is vey important to develop the artistic impression of skating, but not to lose any of the athleticism. If you look at how skating has evolved over the past 100 years, it is nothing less than amazing. My daughter and her friends used to joke about wanting to go back in time, with their present skills, and compete against Sonja Henie and beat her!

I don't think it would be a good idea to lengthen the time of the programs. Most skaters have a difficult time enough getting to the end of a program as it is. When you look at the men, in comparison to the ladies, at least they are men in their 20's. I believe that it takes a long time to develop both aspects, the artistic and technical, and put them both together to make an interesting program. The true champion is the skater who can do that. I think it is rare for a skater in his/her teens to have developed that skill.

Speaking of a program that had a good combination of artistic and technical skills that told a story, I would put Evan's Carmen at the top of the list.
