I don't know how many remember this, but Andre Lutai from Russia was arrested after the men's final at SA in Lake Placid for stealing a car from a service station and then driving while intoxicated. We all heard about it before we left Lake Placid. Then there wasn't anything heard about it since.
I found this tidbit today. He was sentenced today after the incident that happened almost two years ago. He pled guilty to reckless driving and the charges of drunk driving and larceny were dropped. He was fined and sentenced to three days in jail. He was banned from the Russian Federation for a year, but I think that occured before today's sentencing. He missed out on the 2010 Olys, and the two spots went to Plushenko and Artem Borodulin. Lutai was expected to qualify.
He has married the ice dancer Ina Demicorva and lives now in Bulgaria. It is uncertain whether he will pursue a berth for Sochi for Russia or Bulgaria.
I think the plea bargain made for him got him off pretty easy. A three day jail sentence for drunk driving isn't much, but then that charge was dropped, which I certainly can't understand. I think DUI's are a very serious matter, but at least he was banned from the Russian Fed. for a year.
