MonicaJM2001 - January 25, 2009 07:28 PM (GMT)
Ack I am soooo nervous now (as usual).
taytay165 - January 25, 2009 09:09 PM (GMT)
Here we go! The live coverage is starting now, and Johnny is the first skater up. We'll see if he can recover from the errors in the short.
3A - popped again. Supposed to be a combo. 3A-2T - good. Scratchy on the landing of the axel. 3S - (changing choreo, but good) 2A - clean. Circular footwork - interesting choreo as usual for Johnny, but I gotta say...he doesn't look like he's really into this performance. Sit spin - not his best, but ok. Beginning to feel the music more. 3Loop - doubled. 3Z-3T-2T - great! 3Z-2T - good. 3F - hard fall. Yikes. Right into a flying sit spin - traveling a bit. Straightline footwork - good, but not emotionally connected so a bit ineffective. Final combo spin - ok. Not the skate he needed. Really rough time out there. He just didn't look very on...really didn't ever get into the program.
taytay165 - January 25, 2009 09:14 PM (GMT)
133.23 for johnny's LP score.
Katis - January 25, 2009 09:41 PM (GMT)
Oh, that doesn't sound good :(
Haven't been following skating into details lately, did he have any problems or was this a sudden happening (in the SP)? I suppose this LP could be influenced by that unfortunate SP and the placement..
Ah well, of course Good luck to Evan and hopefully he will make it! :cheer:
taytay165 - January 25, 2009 10:14 PM (GMT)
Katis - he's been sick a couple times this season and says he hasn't had the time to train properly.
Evan just nailed a GORGEOUS, perfect 4T-3T in the warm up. He had the warm up everyone dreams of! haha. I hope it carries into his performance! OH! and his costume is FABULOUS!!! It's still the same idea (red bowtie) but it's like a very dark blue (or black...can't really tell!) velvet with a white shirt and like i said, red bowtie. It's really nice. Very classy!
Curran Oi had a nice skate, missed the 3A but it was nice.
Now up is Brandon Mroz, 4th after the short.
4T - NICE! 3A-2T - out of spread eagle, nice. 3F-2T-2L - good. Combo spin - not really fast but nice positions. 3L - nice. Good run out on the landing. 3A - turn out. 3Z-3T - very good. Circular step - good. (I guess he skates at the same rink as Ryan Bradley and Jeremy Abbott) Sit spin - ok. 3Z - weird on the take off, but good landing. Flying sit spin - nice positions. Straightline steip - losing a little bit of energy, but still nice. What a senior debut! Very very nice. Great job, Brandon!
taytay165 - January 25, 2009 10:18 PM (GMT)
154.02 for the long, iknto first over weir
taytay165 - January 25, 2009 10:24 PM (GMT)
Ryan Bradely - 4T - had almost down, but hit. HUGE 3A-3T combo - GORGEOUS. Spin -nice. 3S - singled. Weird. 3A - big again, great! flying sit spin - good. really playing up to the crowd in teh straightline footwork. I love how it goes with the music. Ryan's havin' fun. :) 3Z-2T - very nice. 3L - great. 3Z-2T-2T - a little loss of speed, but all landed. 3F - perfect! Into the circular step now and wow is he going at it! Sellin' it for sure! Combo spin - good centering and speed. GREAT job from Ryan! Only that one 3S, but great job.
MonicaJM2001 - January 25, 2009 10:24 PM (GMT)
Did I mention I was getting nervous??????????/ Good luck Evan!!!!!!!!!!
taytay165 - January 25, 2009 10:28 PM (GMT)
Ryan into second place. EVAN UP!!!!
taytay165 - January 25, 2009 10:29 PM (GMT)
Frank and Evan are Talking about the quad...
taytay165 - January 25, 2009 10:30 PM (GMT)
4T-3T - fall. Gosh not a good way to start. Come on Evan!!!
taytay165 - January 25, 2009 10:34 PM (GMT)
3a - very good. 3S - shaky but landed.
Good circular step sequence. Flying sit spin - fabulous. Great positions and speed. 3A - hop inbetwee 3T, 3L - good. Evan's having to fight. 3F-2T-2L - great! 3Z - gorgeous! He's getting more comfortable. 3F - good! Sit Spin - also great. Straightline step - good. Final combo - great. He's not happy with it, but he fought for it. We'll have to wait and see.
taytay165 - January 25, 2009 10:38 PM (GMT)
Into second behind Brandon Mroz. Tough skate from Evan...Brandon was certainly good though. It was the fall on the quad that did Evan in though.
MissMac - January 25, 2009 10:42 PM (GMT)
Agghhhhh!!! I was soooo nervous watching Evan skate...after seeing Brandon's scores, I knew Evan really could not mess up with that quad. I think Evan will be looking at a bronze medal...(and by something like .6 of a point?)
I did like the change of costume though... :)
taytay165 - January 25, 2009 10:43 PM (GMT)
Parker Pennington up.
3A - huge, but a fall. 2Z-3T - backwards but hey. ha. 2A - good. 3S - good. Flying sit spin - traveling a little bit, but good speed. Circular footwork - seems much simpler than the top 2 have been, but it's very flowing. 3Z - good. nice outside to inside spread eagle. 3F - a little wonky on the landing, no combo. 3L-2L-2L - nice. 3F - fall. Sit spin - nice positions, good speed. Straightline step - much less complex again. Final combo spin - really good, great positions and speed. Tough skate for Parker, too.
taytay165 - January 25, 2009 10:47 PM (GMT)
Parker looked so sad. :*( i wanna give him a hug.
Jeremy is up! Here we go. It's his title to lose at this point. He looks a little nervoues...understandably!!
taytay165 - January 25, 2009 10:52 PM (GMT)
3Z - absoultely beautiful. 3F - close call on that, a little forward on the landing. Flying sit spin - nicely done. 3A - flawless. 3S - again, perfect. GREAT sit spin. So much speed! Really feeling the music here. 3A - 2T - barely able to hang onto the axel and get into the toe. Circular step - very nicely choreographed to the music. Totally different from Evan's style but really well done. 3Z - 2T-2T - great. Supposed to be a 3-3 but hey. 3L - singled. only mistake of the program so far. Straightline steps - WOW! 2A-3T - hand down. Combo spin - great positions, gaining speed. And he is our National Champion as far as I'm concerned!
MonicaJM2001 - January 25, 2009 10:55 PM (GMT)
I know he's probably ticked but it shows alot to fight for the rest after the fall on the quad at the very beginning, that fight HOPEFULLY earned him a spot on the World team!
taytay165 - January 25, 2009 10:57 PM (GMT)
Final standings
1. Jeremy
2. Brandon
3. Evan
4. Ryan
5. Johnny
Makes it interesting for the world team...My prediction is the top 2 make the team, but it's possible that Johnny gets added due to his success at worlds last season. Then it gets complicated.

Congrats to Jeremy for the win! Of course, I am sad and disappointed that Evan did not have his best performance and was not able to pull off a win, but I hope that having a not so perfect year this year means he will be fired to have a great year next year!!!
I do wonder if the world team will be 1-2-3, or will they put Johnny on there?
Katis - January 25, 2009 11:04 PM (GMT)
Congrats to Jeremy, Brandon and Evan for the podium! The difference really is tight between 2 and 3!
I too wanted Evan to have a exceptional skate, I'm sorry it didn't work out that way. So hopefully he'll make it to LA!
Wow, I am always forgetting to realize that in US the Nationals are a real drama and fight for spots at international competitions and noone has anything granted. :o
Since our and other smaller European countries usually have 1-2 good skaters, it is mostly clear.

If they put in Johnny by bumping Evan, it will be so disappointing for Evan not to go to Words. And there was only .60 difference between silver and bronze.
But unless there was an injury, USFSA rarely ever bumped a skater.

yeah...I don't think they will bump anyone. I would just feel really bad for Johnny if he were not able to make it to worlds as his bronze medal placement last year was what secured US's 3 spots. If Evan and Brandon were reversed, maybe...but the way things are, I am thinking the top 3 will be the world team. And plus, I do think all three of them deserve their spots. Brandon especially pulled out quite the program! Anyways, Congrats to all three of them!
MonicaJM2001 - January 25, 2009 11:18 PM (GMT)
When will the World Team be announced? I really hope Evan wouldn't get bumped from it. It sucks how he was only .6 or whatever out of silver and he might end up off the team. If they add Johnny, who would they logically bump? The 2 time National Champion, 2 time World Bronze medalist or a new skater who under no pressure whatsoever and no expectations had a skate to remember? The pressure will now be on at Worlds in LA to get the US men 3 spots at the Olympics. After that first fall on the quad Evan could have had a complete melt down and ended up with a disastrous program as we have seen happen to other skaters in the past but instead he got up and fought through the rest to salvage a bronze medal. It that type of guts and determination that is needed to help secure the US spots at the Olympics. I will be very angry if Evan got knocked out...........
MonicaJM2001 - January 25, 2009 11:24 PM (GMT)
I do think it would be a shame for Johnny not to make the world team since he basically secured the 3 spots last year for Worlds but I don't want him to be added at Evan's expense and it may be way too much controversy to knock second place off. Evan earned his way and but for the fall on the quad had a great program.
MissMac - January 25, 2009 11:32 PM (GMT)
no..I don't think they would knock off Evan. (And I would never want that to happen!)
-tonya- - January 26, 2009 12:16 AM (GMT)
Since Brandon is under 19 he could still go to Jr. Worlds, meaning Jeremy, Evan and Johnny could be the Sr. team. I love Ryan, but I think they would choose Johnny over him.

Honestly, I wouldn't argue with that scenario but it might cause controversy with others though again even with the quad fall and Brandon skating lights out, Evan still was only 0.60 out of second. I don't know what the US figure skating officials will do but how ironic and sad if Evan misses out on worlds in his back yard? :( .I really don't think that will happen though.....I just hope they announce it asap who will be on the team.
-tonya- - January 26, 2009 12:38 AM (GMT)
I agree! Just post ASAP!!! ;)
MonicaJM2001 - January 26, 2009 12:39 AM (GMT)
Does anyone know how many points a quad triple is? ( before adding or subtracting GOE?)
MissMac - January 26, 2009 01:16 AM (GMT)
hmm...not entirely sure. I just checked on ISU and a quad toe is worth 9.8, and a triple toe is worth 4. I don't know if that means a quad-triple in combination is worth 13.8 then?

Hmm..now I wonder why they list the names the way they did. Evan's is before Brandon's on the World Team, but it's reversed for 4CC. I know it really doesn't mean anything, but I was just curious!
casaverde - January 26, 2009 01:37 AM (GMT)
I have noticed about it, too.
World team seems to be considered with international experience. Alternate 1 is Johnny and Stephen is also named.
Brigichan - January 26, 2009 01:37 AM (GMT)
They are nuts for sending the same team to 4CC and Worlds.
I'm heartbroken about Johnny. :cryoutloud:

Well it's not so bad... 4CC is in Canada, and there's a good month between 4CC and Worlds...

I'm sorry about Johnny but with his illnesses on and off it just didn't allow him to skate his usual self. It stinks that it happened and if it were Evan in that situation I would feel just as you do but if there is a bright side, this will really get him motivated for next year. At least it happened now and not during the Olympic season. I understand the disappointment b/c he is the one that got us 3 spots for worlds this year. I won't lie, I am very relieved Evan wasn't bumped but I do get where you are coming from. I wish both could have gone.
Brigichan - January 26, 2009 08:55 AM (GMT)
With "nuts", I meant it's ridiculous to sent the three high finishers to both events. They could easily allow Johnny, Stephen and Ryan to go to 4CC to stay in the pulse of the international figure skating scene, not letting them vanish completely till the next season.
casaverde - January 26, 2009 10:17 AM (GMT)
I watched the competition on J Sports. But they missed the whole part of the first group and the start of the first skater of the second group due to a line trouble. :(
As my general impression, the ladies FS event was a great competition, but the men's wasn't, except a few skaters.
I think Mroz and Bradley performed very well.
I feel very sorry for Johnny. I heard he has suffered from illness very much in this season. Maybe he needs a rest. It's a pity he won't be at LA Worlds nor 4CC. But I hope he will prepare well for the next season after his health will recover.
Jeremy's skating of today was far from his best. I think that his scores were given a little bit generous treatment. But he did what he had to do under huge pressure. Congratulations.
As for Evan, I like his new costume much more than the former one. But honestly, I still prefer simple shirts and pants like ones of Tosca or Carmen. :P
His performance was not very bad. But I felt that he was very careful and lacked in speed. Failure of the quad may have caused it. It might have affected PCS. I wonder if the congestion influenced him. He skated with his mouth open. It might have disturbed his proper breathing or concentration. No 3A of his was downgraded this time. It was a good thing.
I think that he needs a quad in both programs to win. In my personal opinion, it's not necessary for him to prepare various patterns of his first jump of the program. It's not good to be irresolute. He should practice it with a determined attitude to improve it, and has to regain the self-confidence. Consistence will be obtained by repeating of putting it in competitions. I want him to do it at every competitions from now on.
It is sad that he lost the title, but now he gained a carefree position. He has nothing to lose. :cheer:
