I think almost everbody can agree around here that we don't like Vong-era and what comes with it. But I was wondering if you prefer writing/reading in/about the classic-trilogy or the expanded universe (new Republic era strictly [face_wink].gif )

Personally, I really like the rebel era, maybe even prefer it. It's hard to say why. Maybe because the characters are still developing into what they will be in the books. It really interests me to see how the characters developed and why they became who they will be later.

On the other hand, with the new republic you can write the stories further on. Put them in complete new situations and see what happens then. Of course in complete disregard of many many books now out. [face_tongue].gif

So, what do you like more? (as you can see having a hard time to decide myself)

Good question. I shall think about it.

I've read a lot of the NJO (not all - mostly skipped the Jedi-navel-gazing stuff) and all of the LOTF, so I'm fairly up to date with the post-Yarvin EU.

I'll get back to you when I'm more awake.

Undoubtedly, the Bantam years, even with the dreck that some authors put out, because the quality stuff was really quality. And because there isn't an overarching storyline, like the Vong, I find, as a writer, you ahve a bit more flexibility in developing your own stories.

Oh, yes! As in "To call the writing of KJA 'dreck' is insulting to the word dreck!"

Sometimes I enjoy resurrecting threads, though I don't think this is too bad since it's only two months old.

I like the Rebel era. I wish they'd write more about this period outside of the big three. I think there's still so much to work with in that regards. I don't really care for most of the books that are set after Starfighters of Adumar. NJO pretty much killed all interest I had for quite some time.

I haven't been too interested in reading the stuff during the Clone Wars. I love a lot of the comics though I haven't kept up with the newer stuff.

I like the old ANH-VotF era. I just can't get into the Clone Wars (or Dark Times), although I did enjoy the first two Commando books. I read the post NJO books, and ocasionally enjoy them, but not as much as I did the older era books.

The comics are good, too. I really like the KotOR ones. Despite the era, they really feel Star Wars, in a happy, lets go get the bad guys way. Legacy is fun to play connect the dots with, but it's a little darker. I'm pretty behind in both of them, though.

You can do that as often as you want. [face_grin].gif

I agree with you. I would love to read about the rebel era more often.

The Rebel era is the best. Before Luke got all mystic and deep; when pilots where heros, and no one knew the outcome of the war.

NJO was hard to get thru except for one or two books like "Rebel Dream" and "Rebel Stand". Just didn't cover the experience of the combants, ie the pilots, enough except for Jaina. I mean, Wedge was in command of one of the major battle fleets and he is given very little wordage in the entire series. His thoughts, his ideas, his feelings about everything....Nada!

LOTF: again not enough Wedge. He is a major player, holding off the forces of the Galactic Alliance @ Corellia; standing up for what he feels is right. What do we get? A few cameos Wedge and his family!

Ok, I'm a die-hard Wedge fan and I really want more pro-fic featuring him. The Rebel Era is a perfect time to feature Wedge and his adventures!

In the NJO series, the penultimate book - The final Prophecy - also has some good Wedge material. Wedge's battlegroup is isolated, outnumbered and trapped. Wedge does his best but has to see people die as he tries to keep as many alive as possible.

There's good stuff from Wedge's viewpoint, forming one of the major plot strands of the book. And as a bonus, Pash Cracken is commanding one of the warships, though Tycho isn't present.

I liked the post Endor to about 10 ABY era best, when the Rebellion was turning in to the New Republic, since it wasn't quite a Rebellion anymore, but not quite a legitimate government yet. The Rebel-era is a close second, but for reasons I'm not too sure of I just like it a little bit less than the early days of the NR. And the later days of it are a bit too much 'oh no, what if we're turning to the Empire now!'-ish for my liking.

I also enjoyed reading the books of Obi-Wan's earlier life (around 44BBY-29BBY). I liked seeing how he became the Jedi he later was, and how he handled becoming Anakin's Master in the first few years after Phantom Menace

Got to be early EU; Timothy Zahn is my favorite author and the Thrawn trilogy got me back into Star Wars several years after the last time I'd seen the movies. It was part of my childhood, really. Of course, Allston's X-Wing books rekindled said interest after KJA did some stuff with the Jedi that was lamentable and mostly boring. I actually had to go to Boston (I live in Ontario) to find the last of the books that I was missing (Bacta War)! That kind of effort makes the series special to me. Of course, I didn't actually go to Boston specifically for that person, it was a school trip to assess Ivy League universities, but ssh, I replay it in my head like I went there to get Bacta War primarily, and happened to also be there for Halloween in Salem, MA and to occasionally stop at some universities. [face_grin].gif

I'm finding some of the Old Republic stuff is kind of interesting.

I have to say in basic era terms, from about Endor to 13 ABY is the period I like because the Empire is still a significant threat. When the Empire died, I felt kind of like SW died. I suppose it had to happen and what, two decades of RL time made it time, but there was still so much to be explored.

I find myself now drawn to Battlestar Galactica (the new version) and the old 'Space Above and Beyond' series that Fox canceled so prematurely because they have the feel I'm always looking for in this kind of story.

BSG and SAB have this awesome, gritty carrier-at-war type feeling and the fighter pilot stuff is almost awesome really awesome. It's something I'm actually studying a bit at the moment so I can revisit the idea of SW pilot fic and maybe produce something a little more than my oft-started, rarely-finished Jedi-pilot crapfic. Something's brewing, no doubt.

But yeah, when the Empire was at least still a threat, that's when I felt things were the best. The semi-detente period through 13 ABY is kind of neat too because it's still kind of like immediately-post-collapse Russia; still a threat but not quite as magnificent in its terror.

At last, another "Space Above and Beyond" Fan! I thought I was the only one who like that series. It was well written and definately showed the feel of carrier warfare. I actually brought the DVD when it came out. Also felt like it was cancelled because I like it!

The post Endor era was the best. KJA almost turned me off all SW with his drivel. Thank god I found the X-Wing series to renew my interest and my love of Wedge.

I am acquiring the series very soon, myself. It's been years since I watched it, but I used to watch it religiously (just like Firefly, which came later). But yeah, SAAB and Firefly both felt as if they were canceled because a) I liked it and b) Fox couldn't handle the mature themes and intelligent commentary provided by each series.
