Inspired by one of Rell's bunnies. (pries fluffball off foot)

Falling By the Wayside

It was impossible for her not to notice the lone figure sitting outside the cafe, apparently deep in thought.

Apparently, the sitter noticed as well. After all, they'd heard a lot about each other, from holos, and at least one other person. "Oh, so it's you?" she greeted, without rancor in her voice.

The newcomer shifted uneasily, wondering how she was going to approach this conversation. "It's just an assignment," she managed to say.

The woman who'd been sitting with a cup of caf brought out a datapad. "I really don't have much. I haven't really gotten into the thick of this project yet," she said, absent mindedly shifting around her dark hair.

The agent nodded as she surveyed the figures and codes on the screen and copied them to her own datapad. "Thank you. Your help will be very much appreciated," she said slowly.

"So how has he---no, how have you two been lately?" the other woman said, trying vainly to conceal the eagerness in her voice.

"We're doing great," the agent said, trying not to sound too smug, or too complacent. Either way just seemed wrong. Besides, didn't the holos, and the ring on her finger now tell most of the story anyway?

"I'm glad to hear that you're happy. I really have to go now," the woman said as she self-consciously pulled a jacket over her blue skin. "Tell him I said 'hello'," she added, sounding a little pained, before going down the street.

The agent watched the scientist walk off the curb and cross the street. At last, she smiled as she turned on her heel and went the other direction towards the spaceport. "That wasn't too difficult," she told herself as she sighed in relief.

"Though it could've been me, sitting by the wayside like her" Iella thought as she stepped back onto the shuttle that would take her home.

Aww. I like the awkwardness between the two of them and how Iella feels a bit of pity because it could have been her.

Wow.

You know, I almost - almost - feel sorry for the flake.

But not quite.

Great piece, FS!
