This news is apparently so new it's only been reported via Del Rey's official Star Wars Facebook page, but...

Aaron Allston announced about two hours ago that he is writing a new Wraith Squadron novel that is due out sometime in 2012 after he's finished his writing duties to Fate of the Jedi. Little more was said about it other than it is officially on Lucas Licensing and Del Rey's confirmed upcoming works list.

It's only taken a decade and change, but it's finally happening. We're getting a new X-Wing book.

I am soooo psyched about this!

We tried to get some more info about it out of him at Dragon*Con a month ago but he wouldn't crack, sadly. Apparently he wasn't allowed to start writing it until post D*C but he did tell us that he knew how he wanted it to go thematically. I don't really remember the rest that went with that because I was a bit buzzed at the time but I'm incredibly excited to see how this goes. [face_grin].gif

Heck, AA could write a book about the Wraiths living out their years in a retirement home and it would be stellar [face_grin].gif

This news is going to keep me bouncing around with excitement until the book comes out in 2012. I hope it leads to more!

I wonder what it'll be on...the Rogues, the Wraiths, or maybe Pash's squadron (technically it wouldn't be an x-wing novel, but still).

If it's the Rogues do you think it'll be when Wedge or Tycho was leading the squadron or later on when Jaina was a Rogue?

Personally, I hope it's when either Wedge or Tycho was Rogue leader. There's still so much to tell about the squadron in that time frame.

I think it's fairly well confirmed that it's to be a Wraith Squadron novel. No idea when it will be set, so who knows if Wedge wil be with them. Allston likes writing Wedge, so I@m hoping for a supporting role for him at least.

I'd give just about anything for a good x-wing book set during the "glory years." I'd like to re-visit some old friends.

I like this new title, and pleased that it's designated as an X-wing book.

I've been reading Fate of the Jedi, and it's OK but I'm not wildly impressed. With Mercy Kill being a stand-alone Allston book, I suspect we're going to see a whole new depth to the storyline. Yes, the jedi are an essential part of the SW universe, but I love Wedge and the X-Wing books for showing how it is for the vast majority of the people engaged in these conflicts. They don't have the Jedi's powers to draw on, but they still put themselves into danger, and risk their lives for the sake of others. Maybe this makes the ordinary guys more heroic.

I'm glad that we're promised flashbacks to the earlier days of Rogue Squadron. Hopefully we'll learn more about what happened to those original Wraiths who haven't appear in later stories (like Runt). I also hope that Allston is setting the scene for new readers, because there will be more Wraith Squadron books to follow.

And we're promised second generation Wraiths. Please, please let Myri be in this book. And Wedge, of course.

Latest news is a strong hint that there will be two Wraith Squadrons in the book, and neither will be aware of the other.

It's possible this is because the books is set in two time periods. One is the original squadron, seen just after moving to Intelligence; the other if the squadron active at the time of the Fate Of The Jedi series currently being published. Then again, what is the link between the two ? Why the two time periods ? (aside from giving Allston an excuse to write about the 'Classic Wraiths').

My current theory is that the original Wraiths did or discovered something that will be important for the mission that the new Wraiths are doing, some 30 years later. If Myri is with the new Wraiths (as I very much hope), maybe she will need to call on her Dad for info about the past - which brings Wedge nicely into the currently era, as well as the past one.

Roll on next summer ! I wanna read this !

Belated as hell but I may or may not have sprinted down an escalator after Allston and asked him the Myri question. [face_tongue].gif

Here's the cover for Mercy Kill, for those who haven't seen it yet. I think it's fabulous - very much in keeping with the older X-wing books.

That's an E-wing that the X-Wing is chasing. The book is due out in August - only 8 months to go ! [face_dancing].gif

The cover has been changed. This is the new version:

I like the colour scheme, but the previous version matched the original X-wing books better. It's nice to see the New Republic symbol again - I guess that's a reference to the flashback scenes. There's an excerpt from 'Mercy Kill' in the back of the new Fate Of The Jedi book: Apocalypse which is set 13ABY and Allston has said there are scenes just after the Wraiths go to Intelligence, which would be 8 ABY.

My copy of Apocalypse should be arriving on Monday, so I'll be able to read the excerpt soon.
