Title: NaNoWriMo
Description: National Novel Writing Month
Jesina Dreis - October 7, 2006 05:33 PM (GMT)
The official site is
here. For those who don't know, it runs November 1 - November 30, and you write a novel during the month. You can do all the planning in advance, but you don't actually start writing until 11/1.
I myself am not doing it - I'm hip-deep in an original fic that I've already started and don't want to put on hold. But I am using the resources on the site to help with my own work.
Anyone here going to give it a shot?

Thinking about it. Last year I signed up ahead of time, was definitely going to give it a go- and then ended up with my hand in that infernal cast. This year, I'm going to wait till the last minute to decide, because I do not want to tempt fate again this year...
But I have a couple of plots that I could use for it. Just need to decide on one, bearing no unforseeable injuries.
Mirax_Corran - October 7, 2006 10:50 PM (GMT)
Unfortunately, I'm not going to put that much pressure on myself, as I'll just be finishing up a show, and dealing with school crap, too.
Corellia's Dream - October 8, 2006 01:06 AM (GMT)
It's probably as well not to try if you've got other things on. Even if you do plenty of planning in advance, trying to write even a 50,000+ word novel in the space of one month it going to take a lot of time and effort.
It's a good idea to give people a set date to sit down and actually start working. that could be helpful to some. I'd kind of worry that some people wouldn't get anywhere near finishing their novel in the space of a month, and feel disencouraged.
Mia Tiska - October 14, 2006 04:42 AM (GMT)
I'm totally signed up for this! :D Third year in a row. Of course, last year I only got up to 3,446 words or so... so it's my goal this year to double it. ;)
NaNo gets me jumpstarted on lots of fics, not just the one I've chosen for NaNo, so it all works out in the end. :)

Jesina Dreis - October 17, 2006 10:47 PM (GMT)
I think that I'm going to make a goal of writing 50,000 words during November, even though I've started the fic already.
Myri Antilles - October 20, 2006 12:23 AM (GMT)
I'll be writing a novel's worth of papers during that time... does that count? ;)
Mia Tiska - October 21, 2006 10:57 PM (GMT)
 I think so, Myri. They say you can do autobiographies, fanfic, original fic, screenplays too I think... just about anything you want. Except write the same word over and over 50,000 times. ;)
I still can't decide if I should work on original fic or fanfic.

I don't know how many are aware of this, but A.C. Crispin, who wrote the Han Solo Trilogy, co-runs a site called Writer Beware. They also have a blog
here. This particular post to the blog has to do with NaNo and the concern that participants might try to self-publish their work w/o being informed about the risks of getting scammed. Please, please read it.
Mara - October 28, 2007 10:25 PM (GMT)
So, who's participating this year?
Bran_Stark - October 29, 2007 12:08 AM (GMT)
I might. But I've never tried to. :worried:
Mara - October 29, 2007 12:33 AM (GMT)
Neither have I. I got conned into this sick, twisted bit of sadism.
-thor- - October 29, 2007 08:24 AM (GMT)
A 50k word novel in one month? Naw, sorry. Not my cup of tea. If I want to be stressed all I gotta do is go to work :whistling:
Besides 1: Being german I'm probably not part of the "target audience". :pfft:
Besides 2: As I'm starting a two-week vacation next monday I wouldn't have the time, anyway. :pfft:
Jesina Dreis - October 29, 2007 01:33 PM (GMT)
You mean you don't spend your vacation writing? What else are you gonna do? :p
-thor- - October 29, 2007 02:03 PM (GMT)
I'll probably write, but nothing creative (still on Star Wars break with no Fanfiction being written). A friend has asked me to cross-read my aviation book collection and gather some facts for a project of his. And I foolishly said yes ... now looking at the pile of books my stomach suddenly feels queasy
Mara - October 29, 2007 03:48 PM (GMT)
Actually, they have German chapters :p
Jesina Dreis - October 9, 2008 04:50 PM (GMT)
That time of year again...
Anyone doing NaNoWriMo?
I don't know that I'll do it totally legit, but I might set a goal for myself of writing 50k words during the month, on various SW fics
BigFatty - October 9, 2008 07:12 PM (GMT)
I'm planning on doing it for the first time. Being my dorky, organizing-frenzy self, I made a calendar for October of all the things I need to do to prep and then made it for a wallpaper for my computer. Let's see if it'll help me be able to write all those words in a month.
Jesina Dreis - October 9, 2008 07:30 PM (GMT)
Are you doing fanfic or original fic?
BigFatty - October 10, 2008 10:55 PM (GMT)
I'm doing fanfic. I have yet to come up with anything worthwhile when it comes to original stuff. I need a base to start from. I'll be doing something that fits into this big AU I've set up for myself that will take place about 90 years after RotJ.
Warrax - October 13, 2008 07:09 PM (GMT)
I'm going to give this a whirl again. I got like 12,000 words into it the first time and then exams killed me. This year, I only have two exams, though, so maybe it'll go better this time around.
Jesina Dreis - October 13, 2008 08:17 PM (GMT)
Well, I just signed up on the site, username Jesina if anyone wants to add me :) I'm doing fanfic, a new SW fic (and RogueMara and the spy museum in DC are completely and totally at fault for that...)
I believe I can do the 50k words in one month. I am glad AAC is already over 50k, so that you all won't suffer from fic abandonment while I do this. Whether the fic will be done in 50k words is another story entirely...
Jesina Dreis - October 16, 2008 02:52 PM (GMT)
This calendar is from last year (I think) but it's amusing nonetheless

That's hilarious. I'll have to show you my calendar for October to prep, and the pedigree (family tree) I'm building once it's finished. I keep telling myself that I don't need it all the filled out since a) I don't want my whole dramatis personae to be related to each other & b) I hate making up names.
Jesina Dreis - October 16, 2008 07:03 PM (GMT)
What are y'all's names over at the nano forums?
I once started putting together a character list for a political novel. I needed names of dozens of characters just because so many people move through a campaign and not naming them would have left me with "the regional director for the southeast" or the equivalent every other page.
It was the most painful process EVER.

Especially with wonky Star Wars names. Otherwise I'd just grab a phonebook and start naming characters.
I'm Call_Me_Lydia over there and just added you as a buddy. I need to track down some others and work on my profile over there. And think of a title. And work on my plot...
Jesina Dreis - October 16, 2008 09:21 PM (GMT)
:bounce: I came up with a title :D It's lame, but it's a title and it's better than *ignores title* :P
I want to be putting more work into the planning but my AAC muses are being difficult enough that I fear what will happen if I ignore them.
And, ugh. That is the worst part of writing SW fic. I hate names. For some reason I gravitate toward certain letters. It's an effort to not use surnames starting with D or female names ending in A.

Yeah, I get drawn to certain letters too: T, G, and K.
BigFatty - October 17, 2008 04:31 PM (GMT)
I finally have
my family tree built. Probably won't use everyone on it (that is still alive by this point in history), but they're there if I need them.
Did I mention how much I hate coming up with names? :hypnotized: :headwall:
Jesina Dreis - October 17, 2008 06:56 PM (GMT)
Holy God in heaven.
My brother is now a SW character ! (his name is Evan)

Then I'll make sure he doesn't get killed off. ;)

Almost there, boys and girls. Anyone hyperventilating yet? :P
Warrax - October 28, 2008 05:59 PM (GMT)
Heh, my new pilot fic is my NaNoWriMo entry.
Jesina Dreis - October 28, 2008 07:14 PM (GMT)
What's your username over there?
BigFatty - October 30, 2008 04:48 PM (GMT)
Finally have a title for my novel: The Definition of Duty.
Now let's see how often I'll change my mind about that.

Anyone starting at midnight tonight?
I like your title, BigFatty. Do you have a summary?

Thanks. As for a summary, it's going to start 92 years after RotJ. The main plotline of the story (I still can't bring myself to say or type the word "novel") is mostly revolving around Jedi. Someone challenges this new generation of Jedi because not everyone who can use the Force is trained to be a Jedi, and even those who are are free to pursue different lines of work (such as flying, other branches of the government, what have you) after receiving training. But have no fear, there will be plenty of pilots around. These are the descendants of family lines with the names Antilles, Fel, Skywalker, Solo, and Horn.
And I'm totally starting at midnight. Mostly because tomorrow is a busy day with me driving home and visiting family for the first time since August. Yay for my friend letting me borrow her laptop for my trip.
Warrax - October 31, 2008 09:09 PM (GMT)
I'm starting at midnight, yes.
