Winter has got to be my favourite character in the E_U. She has survived so much and having to remember everything is something that she has borne well. I remember a quote in one of the Han Solo trilogy novels that i can't be bothered to look up right now but in it she tells Bria Tharen of her encounter with Emperor Palpatine and the fear she felt.

She did such a dangerous job and was treated badly as a result of her usefullness but didn't seem to resent it..

I could probably go on but i'd bore you to death...

So what did everyone else think of her?

Jesina Dreis - April 30, 2005 11:29 PM (GMT)
I loved reading her in the comics; wish they'd done more with her, Intel-wise, in the novels.

Mirax_Corran - May 1, 2005 02:23 AM (GMT)
There is so much potential - and they made her a nanny! *shakes head* Winter could have done so much...

Valin_Halcyon - May 1, 2005 04:17 PM (GMT)
Hey, she was a good nanny... I mean come on! She took on an assult team!

Jesina Dreis - May 1, 2005 04:33 PM (GMT)
Well, yeah, she was... but they could have done so much more with her character...

Mirax_Corran - May 1, 2005 05:32 PM (GMT)
She took on a what? *hasn't read and never plans on reading the JAT*

Jesina Dreis - May 1, 2005 05:51 PM (GMT)
An assault team tried to get Anakin, I believe, on Anoth.

Been a while since I read the books...

Valin_Halcyon - May 1, 2005 07:01 PM (GMT)
I have all three of those. Picked them up for a buck each.

BTW, Kevin J. Anderson is a good author. His star wars books may be mediocre, but he did great on the essential chronology and he has a few excellent non-star wars books.

Sephrenia - May 3, 2005 01:32 AM (GMT)
Winter is one of my favourite characters too. I especially liked her protrayal in the comics. I second what Mirax_Corran said... she could have been used so much more in the novels and they had to make her a nanny!

Maybe she still continued with some Intel work? I just can't see her doing nothing but changing nappies, babysitting the three children, telling stories and following the Solo family all around...

Regarding KJA... am I the only one who cringed at the implications  of a relationship between Winter and Ackbar? Not that I have anything against Ackbar but... Winter and Tycho are together (!!)... And KJA also went to set Wedge up with that feather-brained blue scientist  ...

Okay rant over :D

Jesina Dreis - May 3, 2005 05:13 AM (GMT)
When I write her, I tend to ignore her nanny-ness...

You are NOT the only person bothered by the suggested Winter/Ackbar nonsense...

Valin_Halcyon - May 3, 2005 01:59 PM (GMT)
Winter/Ackbar?

Winter/Ackbar?

That's what I thought. Winter had been in the relationship with Tycho for so long then, that it's really cruel. At least nothing happened. . .

Sephrenia - May 4, 2005 11:56 PM (GMT)
Not if KJA had his way.... I seem to recall some rather disturbing comments he made about Winter/Ackbar a long time ago.

Never mind. We can all have selective amnesia over that issue. Ditto for Wedge/Qwi. :shhh:

Mirax_Corran - May 5, 2005 12:22 AM (GMT)
Yup. Fortunately, I've never read KJA's SW stuff. :dancing: *has selective amnesia*

JediTristan - May 6, 2005 05:36 AM (GMT)
ah, KJA! *grumbles*

Ew, I remember noticing that too! Gross!

RedBirdie - May 24, 2005 01:05 AM (GMT)
Burger Boy should refund the money of anyone who bought his drivel.

Can anyone clear me up on Winter's role and how it evolved from the early comics up through to the NJO?

I know she was an Intel agent for the Alliance, and I know she became nanny and bodyguard for the solo brats. But what, exactly, happened when the Alliance became the New Republic?

JediCallie - August 8, 2005 06:42 PM (GMT)
I might be wrong, but I think she served as an aide/bodyguard (not sure about the bodyguard) for Leia.

Jesina Dreis - August 8, 2005 06:43 PM (GMT)
That's what I thought... wasn't really sure if she was still part of NRI or what. And was it the entire time til the twins were born?

JediCallie - August 8, 2005 06:45 PM (GMT)
QUOTE
As Leia became a fixture in New Republic politics, Winter was by her side. She was Leia's aide in the Provisional Council, serving as a living holorecorder, committing to memory every word said at important meetings. During the Thrawn crisis, Winter proved instrumental in ferreting out Delta Source, Thrawn's primary spy resource on Coruscant.

Winter also served as nanny to Leia's newly born twins, Jacen and Jaina. At first, Winter relied on Noghri bodyguards to help safeguard the children, but after the Imperial threats escalated following the resurrected Emperor's destructive campaign against the New Republic, greater precautions were taken. Winter was sequestered on New Alderaan with the children, and later, on the remote fragmented world of Anoth.

The location of Anoth was known only to Luke, Winter and Admiral Ackbar, though a New Republic double-agent eventually managed to divulge its whereabouts to Imperial Ambassador Furgan. Furgan led an attack force against Anoth, which at the time was protecting the infant Anakin Solo. The automated defenses of the planetoid held off the Imperial attack, and Winter armed herself to protect the young Solo. In the end, the Imperials were defeated, and Han and Leia decided to keep the family together rather than hide the children.Winter continued to help Leia in raising the children, as Organa Solo's career in politics kept her busy.

Years later, shortly after the Almania crisis, Winter and Tycho Celchu married. During the Yuuzhan Vong invasion, Winter went to Mon Calamari to serve as the personal aide to the venerable Admiral Ackbar.

That's part of the article on her on the OS Databank.

Sephrenia - August 10, 2005 01:50 AM (GMT)
To be honest, I can't see Winter as not being part of Intel. If I were General Cracken (cue anti-Cracken missiles), I wouldn't want to lose an operative like her :p

Um, I know this is probably a really odd question but... does anyone think that Winter could have albinism?

Jesina Dreis - August 10, 2005 02:04 AM (GMT)
That's a good point, Seph.

And that's not a weird question, really... since the white hair. But I believe she has blue (?) eyes... colored at any rate, so I don't think so. And her skin is normal for a caucasian.

RedBirdie - August 10, 2005 03:45 AM (GMT)
I always got the impression that once the government started functionng, Winter became Leia's senate aide (and if the NR Senate is anything like the American Senate, nothing happens without the extremely underpaid, underappriceated, and insanely hardworking senate aides!). And then KJA was allowed to write SW...

Jesina Dreis - August 10, 2005 12:49 PM (GMT)
*snicker*

A lot of the time I write Winter as if she's still NRI... *shrug*

Half my stories are AU anyway... *mutters*

Sephrenia - August 10, 2005 11:55 PM (GMT)
Strangely enough, albinos usually have blue eyes. And they usually have visual problems such as poor visual acuity, nystagmus... highly unlikely in Winter's case since she can pilot shuttles and is able to shoot anything that moves and flies. But with their medical technology *shrugs* who knows? I thought Winter had green eyes?

Jes:

But AU is fun!

RedBirdie:

nothing happens without the extremely underpaid, underappriceated, and insanely hardworking senate aides

Yeah, the same situation all over the world... lackeys slave, bosses enjoy the fruits of their labour. Voice of experience?

Jesina Dreis - August 10, 2005 11:56 PM (GMT)
Maybe she does have green eyes, I don't really know... but still, her skin is normal.
