` `.socialization;; by their very nature all gods suffer from at least some degree of the condition predictably known as a ‘god-complex’, as such they are very self absorbed and at any get together – regardless how long ago their ‘prime’ expired they will still strive to outdo one another. ‘my believers gave me much bigger tribute than your followers’, ‘yeah? well mine sacrificed themselves in far larger numbers than yours ever did!’ you know, that kind of rubbish. on the rare occasion that they are forced to converge they tend to form cliques with their own kind to the exclusion of others.
their dislike for each other, however, shies in comparison to how most of them view monsters, demons and spirits; even humans they can begrudgingly suffer as they know how they still happen to rely on them for their power. It has somewhat to do with the fact gods believe themselves above the supernatural creatures of the world but another large factor would be jealousy and bitterness. {see worship}
it is just as well that it’s probably detrimental to their survival to keep each others’ company or inhabit the same area; the meeting of gods promotes a field of energy which, even from one on its own, is enough to draw the attention of divining rods and other tools that are being implemented to hunt them down. keeping your head down and remaining inconspicuous is a gods best option alongside blending in, so no matter how they feel inwardly, most will try to blend with humans – they have centuries of observation to help them there – taking normal jobs and keeping a circle of human friends.
the exact same applies to demons and spirits all though they seem to be a little more daring as their powers and presence don’t draw quite so much attention; it never hurts to watch your back and have a decent alibi. ` `.worship;; worship, or more specifically, belief, is the life blood of a deity. they grew from it and strengthen as it strengthens, each telling of their story, every paper written, every act carried out (even if not verbally dedicated to them) all of it contributes to their power and their existence. there are a great many gods, gods of the mammoth, the glacier, the cave-shelter that are nothing more but will o the wisps now and it is not worth it to entertain the thought that they might come again.
it is due to their reliance on belief, worship, sacrifice and memory that demons, spirits and monsters etc are often considerably stronger than gods; once brought into creation they can generate their own power, or else are flesh and bone enough to survive until that gives out or dies. they are as many in their multitude as gods and people so it would be hard to provide every scrap of information on just how it is they live, but it is enough to know that there are an infinite amount of stories and cautionary tales to keep those that need it thriving, and enough hapless victims to cross their path too.
when creatures of other worlds feel they are running low on juice, they are drawn to places that hold significance, or indeed to items that similarly are connected to their histories. by proximity they can draw upon these residual energies to get them through another week, another month, another year depending on how much they need to get them by and just how potent the harboured energies are. this ought to be a private affair as it effects all differently but you can guarantee that it will be an emotional and powerful event. ` `.physical manifestation;;a supernatural’s face is predominantly ruled by what they are, the ideas of the people who’s worship is keeping them afloat, country of origin and only ever so slightly down to their own preferences. character traits also influence exterior appearance and thus ‘evil’ creatures need to work doubly hard not to look shifty and so forth. some that have the power to do so can actually adopt a number of different looks, faces, forms and although that it not a physical change as much as it is altering the perception of those around them to think of them differently. changing form, obviously, is particularly draining to their power supply if it is something they have to force themselves into and not a natural shift.
gift mortals perceive differently to normal humans. take the spider god anansi for instance, to the average eye he may appear as a humorous if lewd old African American man with a cheeky smile, to others a young boy with a mischievous twinkle in his eye and to others still he is an enormous spider. at will, because he is the spider god, he can exit his physical form and inhabit either one or many spiders. the gifted in the know have learned to keep this to themselves although those which are newly inducted might take a bit of getting used to seeing three versions of the same individual at the same time. ` `.authority;;the only real chain of a command a god will ever respond to is that which was first divined by humans themselves. zeus leading the greek, quetzalcóatl and the other creator gods to the Aztecs and dis pater to gaul pagans. Lesser spirits and demons and their ilk follow their own set of rules although they may be drawn to creatures of greater power if it means protection or they stand to gain some other way. ` `.land locked;; for the sake of this roleplay, your gods are land locked, you will be writing from the perspective of just one country's version of god, spirit, demon etc. so because we're in America, you would be writing for that incarnation, although other versions exist elsewhere. you would have arrived with settlers and explorers, or more recently when the internet became much wider spread and people chopped and changed their own religions for something else.
however, because no matter what country you are in, you will still essentially be the same God, you have a sort of 'shared' memory. whatever one version of yourself is getting up to you are, to some extent, aware of what it is and where, but have no direct connection with those others, as it were. more than likely, if one version were to find a way to cross continents and meet another incarnation, the universe would implode... so lets not go there. ` `.bedtime stories;; there are hundreds of ways gods and their ilk come into being but for spirits and demons the most popular would have to be stories. they thrive on the emotions their stories inspire and for every hundred or so kids that are brought to tears or made jubilant by these 'innocent' bedtime musings, another is born.
entertain a thought, pass it along, post it in your favourite forum or discuss it at enough seminars and eventually it will take shape and grow.
