QUOTE (Con @ Jul 10 2009, 06:22 PM)
We have such a waitsigns restore patch somewhere in an old thread already which works for japanese version. But I see no reason to add this patch on the main page. It is absolutely useless until you won't make a va japanese version.

Well personally I would put it, if only to be able to restore the original behavior that was disabled by Roto. However, because of the reason you mentioned, I would put it in the Old Patch section. wink.gif

Alright now, let's try again with the translated pre-patched ROM this time. Let's add the 3 patches from the VA set and here we go...

...

Well bad news. With the exception of the corrupted characters, everything I described earlier still happens, including the credits at the end of week 2.

However, since the Textbox Translation is already applied on the pre-patched ROM, I'm now getting corrupted wait signs. Oops. nugget.gif

Guess I'll need to patch my ROM manually from scratch to do a valid test on that one, but I think you can start looking at the other issues for now.

I meant:
- take the japanese rom
- apply the translation
- apply the va.

was what I was referring to. I figured at some point we might be interested of replacing those with the appropriate Japanese script for such portions.

I have no idea what you're quoting, but I'm going to guess it's my last screenshot. But I thought they were the right translations, just a bit condensed to fit a texbox.

WELL THIS TIME LET'S TRY IT AGAIN WITH THE RIGHT ROM AND THE RIGHT SET OF PATCHES.

OH WHAT A SURPRISE, NO CHANGES EXCEPT FOR THAT WAIT SIGN. nugget.gif

Well, I think you were right Duke after all. The extra Japanese letters in the wait sign of my first batch of screenshots matches perfectly those from the English translation (see attached screenshot). And I found a comment in Frank Pero's that talks about this rezise.

So the Japanese characters in the middle were indeed resized in one of the patches, and those Japanese characters do not have any meaning. Interesting. Well I hope I can find that original wait sign patch somewhere...

In the meantime I decided to force access to weeks 3 and 4.

First, the credits appear in weeks 2, 3 and 4.

Second, I noticed that when thunder strikes at the end of week 3, the result screen becomes brighter (see bottom-right screenshot). I think I already mentioned this in another thread, but I can't remember for sure.

And finally, I noticed that at the end of week 4, when you enter the corridor just before fighting Ganon and go back one screen, in-game music suddenly stops, even though in-game music starts when entering the same room from the outside. The only way to trigger the music back is to go back outside and re-enter the room.

Note that I haven't tried beating Ganon yet, I need to do a full playthrough to do so.

Sorry, I kind of tilted in my last post.

Anyway, I was able to find a 2007 post with Con explaining the 4 bytes to change to disable the waits signs.

I figured that inverting the patch that replaced the 4 bytes from F0 to 80 to another patch that replaced the 4 bytes from 80 to F0 would make the original wait sign appear.

Well I was wrong. I do get wait signs, but it's showing me the alphabet instead of the original Japanese characters. I even checked with a ROM that has only Roto's patch and the upgrade patch applied, and it gives me the same result. sad.gif

The music patch was created before the result screen patch, so this contradicted and resulted in the bugs.

To make the roms ready for va playtest
- take a japanese rom
- apply translation patch
- apply waitsigns_on patch
- apply savescreens_off patch
- apply the attached music_off_new patches instead of those in the va package

By the way here are bad news for Duke: I somehow merged the restoration patch with the textbox translation I think. Means, currently they are not seperated anymore (dunno why).

edit:
Explanations...
- The signstrans_on patch show small kanji letters (somebody, I think Frank Pero, resized them to have place to write english text as well)
- I do not really care about the brighter result screen (random and very rare... to much work to make a palette check, sorry)
- do I have to care about the going back music in Ganon's lair? It is only one screen without music... when you enter the ow, music starts again, as well if you enter the room with Ganon.

Crap.

Well I guess it's not too bad. After all, the restoration patch is all about getting the authentic experience, with no more and no less time to play than in the original broadcast.
Still, had it been possible, I would have kept them separated since some people may prefer to play without interruptions.

I meant actually getting that into the Japanese script, as opposed to either the "wait message" -or- the English-translated script.
Hopefully that came out a bit clearer.

I noticed when I tried to recreate SM's bug. Also the shield patch is part of the restoration patch. I may be able to make a reverse patch.

Edit: I am sorry, it seems to be not possible to disentangle the patches again. I tried with two methods:
- patching one fresh rom with the textbox patch and make a reverse patch
- make a patch with the japanese version (where the textbox patch is not applied)

In both cases the game crashed. sad.gif

Edit 2:
the only possibility I see is to disable the waitsigns again. Ah well. If it was me I would say we leave it merged.

There are 3 patches in your zip Con. Do you want me to only apply music_off_m1new.ips for Map 1?

It seems to be the case, yes. I don't think the little Japanese characters have any meaning at all either, they seem to spell the English translation with the wrong characters.

I do hope it's random and very rare, but oddly enough I got this issue 2 out of 2 times so far. I fear that being outside at the end of week 3 automatically causes this. I still need to confirm this though.

From what I have seen so far it's not that bad, simply odd.

OK so it seems that we're stuck with the textbox translation in the Restoration patch. Does it mean now that we can't easily revert to the old style wait sign? unsure.gif

Just in case, I have a backup from last December with all the singles patches in it that I can send by email.

Oh yes, I inserted a wrong patch. Please only apply those with name "new" in it...

single patches from december won't help... it seems only be possible to restore the restoration patch without textbox/shield with a huge amount of time. And I dunno if this is necessary or even makes sense.

Well, the japanese rom is still without the textbox translation. If... hm, I could create a restoration patch out of this rom which has no textbox applied.

Though, I dunno why I could not create a working textbox reverse patch out of this rom. It might be possible that there is a code in the restoration rom (except translation) that is not part of the japanese version rom. I may look into it when I have time.

For the rest: I really have big issues with real life and thus my responsibility and time for this project must get less. Please understand that I will only code necessary things.

Like I said in the mail, a separate patch to disable the textboxes might just be the best solution actually. They are supposed to be in the game, so players should choose deliberately to disable them, not have to re-enable them after on the the important required patches disabled them (not so for the third/fourth quest of course)

Alright I tried with the new no music patch.

For some reason, it seems to corrupt the first splash screen with an extra N under "ZELDA". But at least now the credits do not appear at the end of week 2.

However, I found another critical bug: if you save your game, the following week will have corrupted wait signs! blink.gif

I tried beating Ganon. (I used cheats to be able to do it.) There are indeed some issues with the music when backtracking too soon, but nothing too bad.

Also, one other thing that doesn't make sense with the restoration patch is the last line that Zelda says about restarting the game when exiting the cave. Errr... what?

When you leave, the overworld is as it was originally (not stormy, with Octoroks) and if you enter the cave again, it will be back to the way it was (just the old man).
So I guess that's what it means.
I used to think that you were allowed to go collect the Triforce parts again (until the time was over, of course) but I don't think so anymore.
