Title: Proudest achivement
SmashManiac - May 8, 2009 12:40 AM (GMT)
What videogame achivement are you the most proud of? I mean, from a gameplay perspective.
Personally, it's to have completed all
Portal achivements without using a guide.
.
Tre - May 8, 2009 07:40 AM (GMT)
...I realized this a long time ago, but now I have proof in your own words. You, SmashManiac, are a robot!!! Unmask!!!!
But seriously, my proudest achivement (which techincally wasn't an achievement, but more-so an "unlocking") was beating all the Levels of N+, and then getting to the final stage of the Expert Challenges. (Sure, you get an achievement for "Beat fifty stages", but it's hardcore to get all the way to the END of the expert mode, too!).
SmashManiac - May 8, 2009 04:03 PM (GMT)
Sorry, I'm not a robot. I'm actually a superior life form.
Tre - May 9, 2009 02:37 AM (GMT)
Ah! Then you're an alien! I knew it!!! Unmask! Unmask!!!
Duke Serkol - May 9, 2009 01:13 PM (GMT)
I thought he was a lawyer.
Tre - May 9, 2009 03:38 PM (GMT)
That's just ONE of his many masks... he's an alien!
But being serious for a moment, I have the MAJORITY of the Portal (TOB version) achievements, and a good portion of the Portal (SA) achievements. I didn't bother with any guides or cheats, either... but until I get through the "2 portal" trials, I can't count myself as "The Awesome" in Portal.
Though I did get ALL achievements in Team Fortress 2 without cheating, boosting, or asking people to let me kill them by being a whiner. :D
SmashManiac - May 9, 2009 10:14 PM (GMT)
Do not be fooled by my awesome Miles Edgeworth avatar.
I'm playing on PC, but I know that the Still Alive version is based on the free Portal: The Flash Version MapPack. It's a great unofficial add-on, no wonder Valve transformed it into a standalone game for the Xbox 360.
It's too bad that there are no gold medal challenges for the MapPack though. :(
Tre - May 10, 2009 07:25 AM (GMT)
Hmmmmm... I never did try playing through any of Orange Box on PC... mostly, because I don't like playing on the computer. It's just not my thing. But yeah, playing the Map Pack without achievements wouldn't feel right... especially since they were so simple it wouldn't be worth playing them without challenge elements.
SmashManiac - May 10, 2009 04:15 PM (GMT)
I can't blame you to prefer a couch over a desk, but personally I prefer the precision and responsiveness of a mouse over an analog stick.
Besides, I didn't buy the whole Orange Box, only Portal. I don't like action-horror games and I don't like co-op games.
I tried N, but I felt it was more frustrating than challenging.
Tre - May 10, 2009 11:47 PM (GMT)
I do admit that the comfort of my couch (or in my case now, my bed) is so much better than sitting at my computer desk (even with my chair as comfortable as it is) was a factor originally in my gaming choice (though seeing that I started with home consoles is the biggest factor)... I just never enjoyed having to upgrade my computer just to play a game. I tried that route in the past... and kept bumping into "new" games that refused to play on my computer... and I got tired of it being a case of "if you want to play ____, upgrade your system!" every single new title coming out.
So, aside from emulation (when I bothered with emulation), I never play a game on the PC anymore. I admit (because I've played Portal on the PC before) that it IS more accurate with a mouse on almost every game... but having played on consoles almost my entire life, I've learned to adapt to handle the left analog stick so effortlessly that even without aimbots, I can get massive kills on FPS titles that require a great deal of precise aim to succeed.
As for N+... it IS frustration to the max, but that's part of the challenge. Some of the stages, especially on the first run, can take HOURS to figure out the "trick". And that I did all of the stages without even glancing at a guide... well that's a proud achievement right there.
SmashManiac - May 17, 2009 07:32 AM (GMT)
Talking about achievements, I just completed a
full speedrun of Braid in 41 minutes. The challenge time is 45 minutes.
Now if only I could sort out the story into something that would actually make sense... @_@
Tre - May 17, 2009 08:26 AM (GMT)
Man... I've had Braid since... March? And I never really had the desire and time to do a full speed run. I managed to get past all the mini-speed run's trial times... but those took multiple attempts to pull it off.
So I give you props on that.
Tuf Pic - May 17, 2009 04:06 PM (GMT)
I know this is a bit excessive, but I have NOT 1, BUT 2, video game achievements that I can remember that make me proud!!
1) Navigating the Windfish's Egg by writing down the directions ALL THE WAY FROM THE LIBRARY IN MABE VILLIAGE!!
2) Beating Ganon in FSA ON THE FIRST TRY!!
What do you guys think?!
Is that IMPPRESIVE ENOUGH?! :D
chief117 - May 17, 2009 07:08 PM (GMT)
I have all of the Halo 3 achievements except the killtacular and the zombie ones. (Never play zombies)

What do I think? Well, since you ask, regrettably I would have to say no.
It may be somewhat impressing if you memorized the directions from the library, but if you wrote them down... how is that impressive? How do you think other players get through the egg?
And FSA... has anyone in the world actually gotten a gameover from that boss?
I mean, by the time I got there, I probably had about 60 fairies.

1) Doesn't the LADX/LA guidebook have the information that will give you the EXACT DIRECTIONS TO THE NIGHTMARES?!
I didn't even HAVE the guidebook for LADX, so I say that is MILDLY IMPPRESSIVE!!
& after the first time, for a while, I could navigate the maze quite well without EVEN LOOKING AT THE SHEET, which I lost a couple of times... >_<
2) It wasn't exactly a *walk-in-the-park,* & I didn't have THAT MANY FORCE FAIRIES!!
& after that, I DID LOSE several times to Ganon in FSA!!
I'm sure other people have as well...
Have you taken a survey?! If not, then you can ONLY speak for yourself, & not for other fans!! :P
Duke Serkol - May 18, 2009 12:06 AM (GMT)
You are the one that asked for an opinion on those "achievement Tuf, if not, I wouldn't ahve said anything.
And the guide would have to give you several directions since it is determined at random and keeps changing.
But it doesn't matter, reading the directions in the library IS the regular way to finish the game. Using the guide would essentially be cheating.

Never actually made it to that boss. The game got boring and I had not died at all, so I quit. >_<

I think it's worth 0.5G.
Tre - May 18, 2009 10:02 AM (GMT)
Oh come on, now... at least he's trying to join in on the discussion properly here... I mean I think I wrote down the directions my first run through, too. And I used to map out the locations of all those Shells so I'd have the stronger sword for my run-through of the game. That's just normal to do in a Zelda game.
As for FSA... I couldn't really tell you... I've had the game for over a year or two now... and haven't played through past the first stage. Been too busy.
Anyway, another "Proud Achievement", I have one of the lowest gamerscores on my friend's list, among my "die-hard gamer" friends. This means that some how, I ended up getting a life. :D (teasing)
SmashManiac - May 18, 2009 06:53 PM (GMT)
I'll admit, it was a little mean, but I was just stating the obvious.
Tre, I'm glad to hear that you are part of the select few that does not care about maximizing their Gamerscore!
By the way, I just completed Mega Man 9 in Hard Mode. Now time to tackle Super Hard mode!
Tre - May 19, 2009 02:54 AM (GMT)
I've... still not actually gone through Wily's Tower in Megaman 9 just yet. I just didn't have the time, despite loving the series of games. What really threw me for a loop was that the pillars of fire in the tower can be frozen... with Concrete. What the heck?! >_<
But yeah... I just don't care too much about my gamer score. I don't tend to think "What can I do to get more points!!!"... it just never mattered.
SmashManiac - May 19, 2009 03:26 AM (GMT)
I didn't even knew that you could freeze the pillars before completing the game. I just read about it afterwards. I always use Rush for that part. It's much easier too.
Tre - May 19, 2009 03:30 AM (GMT)
...I really should have thought to try using Rush. *Face Palm* I used to do that for Heatman's stage in Megaman 2... because I HATE those @#$&ing block puzzles. >_<
SmashManiac - May 19, 2009 05:29 AM (GMT)
Weird. I typed "megaman block puzzles" in Google Images to find a good joke based on your comment. Somehow I landed on the following.
A funny Megaman 9 boss weakness guide:

A Megaman 2 game where you have to fight all 8 robot masters AT THE SAME TIME:
Playthrough.No energy tanks.A
Legend of Princess fan game.
And finally, a cool Super Mario Bros 3
random Game Genie codes video.
Tre - May 19, 2009 12:46 PM (GMT)
...that chart is just creepy. Honestly, I never knew ~who~ to use what item against in MM9... I just started with Galaxy Man (for the first night of release, I was #4 in the WORLD for fastest clear time... the next day I was #290... and now I cry to even THINK what my numbered rank might be. ;_;) and worked my way along the easier levels first, and then the hardest. ALL of the bosses just ended up beaten by a good dose of Mega Buster (that's an EASY achievement).
As for the Megaman 2 "All Robot Masters" battle... how in the ____?! That's some really unusual hacking. Though a part of me wants to try it out and see if I could do it without using two E-Tanks. Oo;;
Duke Serkol - May 19, 2009 12:47 PM (GMT)
When did this become the lulz thread?
Tre - May 19, 2009 12:49 PM (GMT)
About two minutes after... you know what, I'm going to be "nice" today.
If all goes well, I'm going to have a good day... so I'm retro-actively sharing it.
Duke Serkol - May 19, 2009 12:53 PM (GMT)
Tre, I don't think that was hacking in that Megaman game, I think someone programmed it from scratch on PC.
Tre - May 19, 2009 05:02 PM (GMT)
I couldn't say for sure... it's possibly a hack job, but it's just as possible that it was programmed from scratch. But to do that, you'd have to have had the original sprites, code, and everything else. I'm thinking it really is just a hardcore hack.
Heck, I've done strange things with PAR/GameGenie codes (like making random sprites appear and crap like that)... it's not hard to imagine someone hacking the game to drop every Robot Master into one room... especially when you notice the RM call title (all the names appear, and overlap each other... if you're going to program from scratch, would you really bother with having it look that "crappy"?) and that all Robot Masters were sharing a single life bar (which would change values each time a different RM was hit).
Duke Serkol - May 19, 2009 05:11 PM (GMT)
Well, I don't think a NES game can plausibly have a title screen that looks like it's drawn with a oekaki board, and feature a key config option (why would he bother letting you switch around two buttons?).
I think the "bugs" you pointed out (the robot masters' names, the life bar) were created specifically to make it look like the original thing perforiming in ways its wasn't intended to.
But eh, either way it's quite cool.
...imagine the same thing with Megaman 1. Even if you had E-Tanks, it would be impossible to win. What with IceMan and Elecman taking a third of your energy with one hit.
Or maybe one could deliberately get hit with less damaging attacks, exploiting the invulnerability.
Tre - May 19, 2009 05:19 PM (GMT)
Hmmmm... well without bugging the guy that made the game, I'll never really know. But I've seen people import crappy images into NES games all the time... especially that lame "Final Fantasy 7" (FF1US) hack somebody did. Bleck.
But it's possible that it's an entirely different thing than either of us are guessing. All I care about is that it's pretty neat looking... a bit crudely done, but neat. I might give it a shot one of these centuries. But for now, I have a ton of errands and crap I've had to hold off because I refuse to drive here in the rain. ~_~
SmashManiac - May 19, 2009 08:26 PM (GMT)
I actually tried it. It is indeed a Windows program. All the sprites and music have been ripped. It's even actually possible to use the left door at the start to fight the 8 bosses in water instead, if you don't mind the spikes on the ceiling.
Hard to distinguish this clone from the real thing though.
Oh yeah, and it's freakin' hard. ^_^'
Tre - May 20, 2009 01:55 AM (GMT)
Huh... well dang. That's kind of cool then. Guess now we know for sure.
And I hate fights in the water... I would so not be crazy enough to do that. >_>
Tuf Pic - December 3, 2009 07:24 PM (GMT)
Okay, my proudest video game achievments were actually beating Pokemon Collosium, & the various glitches/cheat codes I managed to use in Zelda & Pokemon, including the Moonjump, getting into Gerudo Valley as a young boy, catching Missingno, although they evolved into Rhydon ( >_< ), accessing glitch worlds in LADX, & the "Beta Quest" in OOTN64!!
@Serkol: *NOW ARE YOU IMPRESSED?!*
& yes, I realize that what I said earlier didn't qualify, but I wasn't thinking straight back then... :(
MadHatter - December 3, 2009 08:04 PM (GMT)
Hmm. I somehow missed this thread.
1-My most shameful (but also most difficult) Zelda-related achievement was beating the TI-82 version. What a waste of time.
2-Another shameful waste of time was brute-forcing my way through every combination of ingredients with Tace T. in Paper Mario.
My proudest achievement is kind of hard to call. I haven't really done that much that someone on the internet hasn't done 10x better. But still... it would probably be one of the following:
3-Getting the pink flower for beating the "Secret Testing Range" level in Pikmin 2's Challenge Mode. Really to be specific the achievement was defeating the second sublevel without losing a pikmin. I was only able to do this with the help of my brother on multiplayer.
4-Getting everything except the messages for >5000 plays in SSBM. This also required the help of a different brother.
Apart from that, and speaking strictly solo-work, I don't have much...
5-Beating every level and getting every path open in Super Mario World 1 - I even called the hotline to make sure there weren't 100.
6-Beating Barbie (NES) 3 times in a row - harder than it sounds
7-Beating Captain Comic, Marble Madness, Snake Rattle 'n' Roll, Doom64, etc. - all of these games I found spectacularly difficult.
And the saddest close calls:
8-Getting all the way through the SMB: The Lost Levels except the final level. I still have not seen Bowser. :(
9-Getting all the stars in Mario 64 (without cheating by looking up how) except the one for racing the penguin a second time.
10-Getting all the Gold Skulltulas in OoT (without cheating by looking up how) except for the ones requiring you to play the Song of Storms.
I'll stop at 10. None of that is very impressive. If I had to chose my favorite one, though, it would be tied between 3 and 4 even though those weren't solo efforts.
Tre - December 3, 2009 11:29 PM (GMT)
Wait... there was a TI-82 Zelda game?! How in the Nine Hells did you get a copy of that?! I've had a TI-82 since the early 90's and only had "Theta Man" (a Pac-Man clone)... and since I didn't have a TI-85, I couldn't have (or use) Tetris.
I need to find and buy a link cable, and see what other nifty little TI-82 games I'm missing out on. >_<
As for achievements... I guess getting EVERYTHING in Final Fantasy VI without any form of help at all. I had everyone up to Lv. 99, with 999MP, and 9999HP, all spells and Espers, and all "arts" and weapons. I even had TWO Atma Weapons (to be fair, you can only have one saved, because the second must be stolen from The Goddess in the second to last battle of the game).
I did that back in junior high, back on the FF III SNES cart. :D

I actually went to the pain of transcribing the code line by line into .txt format when I ran out of space on my 82 and had to delete the game. It's at home now, but if you'd like I can try to find it when I go home for Christmas. Or it's actually probably simpler to just look online. I'm sure it's still kicking around somewhere.
Then again, I can't in good faith recommend it. Every landscape feature is made out of "X"-es, and so you have to have played Zelda 1 in order to know which bushes are burnable, etc.
Battles are side-view ala the Final Fantasy series, and enemies are little "c"-s. Your sword is a "-" and when you attack it alternates between "/" and "-". The bosses have "-*"-s (ball-and-chains) which become "---*"-s. So it's basically the ASCII-art version of Zelda 1. You have to be bored out of your mind to beat it.
Speaking of Final Fantasy, though, my brothers maxed out the HP and XP of all of the characters in FFVII due to the evil rumor that doing this would keep Aeris alive. Needless to say they were fooled.
@Tuf - I've never been that impressed by people using cheat codes, exploits, and glitches to beat games so that part of it doesn't do much for me. Some of the things you spoke about like capturing Missingno and getting to the "Beat Quest" in Oot are actually interesting but I still don't find them very impressive. Didn't you just follow a set of instructions you would have found online?
But,... The fact that you beat Pokemon Collosium is pretty cool though (as long as you didn't cheat to beat it). Beating any game without cheating entitles a person to pat themselves on the back at least a little bit.
Tre - December 4, 2009 07:04 AM (GMT)
I'd actually love to have the Notepad copy you made... I'd actually go to the trouble of typing it all into my little TI-82, and play it. I'm weird like that. I mean heck, I made my own little "browser RPG" for the TI-82 AGES ago, back when I knew how to use the interface keys (the function keys under the LCD) as GetKeys to define new points and variables in my matrix tables. I really would love to get back into doing programs for the little thing, since it was epic fun.
As for FFVII... I don't mean to be bragging, but I had EVERYONE up to Lv. 99 before Disc 2 (BEFORE you go into the Temple and all that), even Aerith. I was #@$&ed off when she got offed. Not that it stopped me from collecting every Master Material, and all the weapons, and maxing out everyone (and teaching them ALL of the Blue Magic spells) and getting every last thing you could in the game.
...I'm an "obsessive compulsive" when it comes to RPGs. It's why I don't play them very much, because I will spend HUNDREDS of hours on a single game, trying to find every last little thing you can collect, without getting help from anyone. And sometimes I end up spending DAYS straight trying to figure junk out, only to end up doing it while in a stupor and never knowing how the heck I did it. :D
Pretty fun stuff. ^_^
