Title: Lair of the Game Tiger
Description: ...giving up.
MadHatter - February 11, 2009 10:49 PM (GMT)
Well I'm officially giving up for now on a part of my mission. Recently I've been on a mad hunt for the last few Zelda-related Satellaview broadcasts (i.e. the ten relevant Game Tiger Digest Soundlink magazines and the four Nov-Dec 1998 News Reading Room items). To this, I've also added a hunt for the two Satellawalker-related Feb 1998 News Reading Room items, and the two Satellawalker-related Apr 1998 News Reading Room items. I've focused mainly on the Game Tiger Digest broadcasts because they are by far the coolest. They're actual ROMs for crying out loud. Anyway I've had absolutely no success in tracking them down, but I thought I'd share some of the material I ran into along the way to make the process easier for the next poor soul who ventures into these waters.
First of all, the Game Tiger Digest has undergone a number of changes in title through the years.
Here is a list of various names it has had:
*Apr 24-July 16, 1995 - Lair of the Game Tiger (ゲーム虎の大穴)
*Jul 17-Sep 3, 1995 - Lair of the Game Tiger Special (1) (ゲーム虎の大穴スペシャル(その1))
*Sep 6-Oct 29, 1995 - Lair of the Game Tiger Special (2) (ゲーム虎の大穴スペシャル(その2))
*Nov 1, 1995-Mar 30, 1996 - Lair of the Game Tiger Special (3) (ゲーム虎の大穴スペシャル(その3))
*Mar 21, 1996-Mar 29, 1997 - Game Tiger Super Sleeper (ゲーム虎の超大穴)
*Dec 30, 1997-Apr 4, 1998 - Game Tiger Super Sleeper (Special Edition) (ゲーム虎の超大穴(特別編))
*Mar 30, 1997-Mar 29, 1998 - Battle of the Tiger Maga (虎マガ大作戦)
*Mar 30, 1998-Apr 3, 1999 - Game Tiger Hallmark (ゲーム虎の太鼓判)
*Currently -
Comic Art Asylum (コミックとらのあな) (see also
the wiki-article)
As you can see there are periods of overlap when presumably two versions of the same magazine were being put out, but at any rate the Game Tiger Digests issued between Apr 24, 1995 and Apr 3, 1999 were done as Satellaview-downloadable Soundlink Magazines, and these are the ones that interest me.
Specifically of interest are:
*The Dec 29, 1996 Game Tiger Super Sleeper (part 1) - Containing the article entitled "BS The Legend of Zelda"
*The Mar 23, 1997 Game Tiger Super Sleeper (part 1) - Containing the article entitled "The Legend of Zelda"
*The Mar 30, 1997 Battle of the Tiger Maga (Issue #1) - Containing an article entitled "Program Guide (BS The Legend of Zelda Ancient Stone Tablets)"
*The Apr 6, 1997 Battle of the Tiger Maga (Issue #2) - Containing an article entitled "Program Guide (BS The Legend of Zelda Ancient Stone Tablets)"
*The Apr 13, 1997 Battle of the Tiger Maga (Issue #3) - Containing an article entitled "Program Guide (BS The Legend of Zelda Ancient Stone Tablets)"
*The Apr 20, 1997 Battle of the Tiger Maga (Issue #4) - Containing an article entitled "Program Guide (BS The Legend of Zelda Ancient Stone Tablets)"
*The Jul 19, 1998 Game Tiger Hallmark (Issue #17) - Containing the article entitled "Zelda E3 Was Here!"
*The Aug 30, 1998 Game Tiger Hallmark (Issue #23) - Containing the article entitled "The Legend of Zelda: New Information"
*The Sep 20, 1998 Game Tiger Hallmark (Issue #26) - Containing the article entitled "The Legend of Zelda: Color GB"
*The Oct 25, 1998 Game Tiger Hallmark (Issue #31) - Containing the article entitled "New Information GET! The Legend of Zelda"
Now, I have discovered that two Game Tiger Digest ROMs do exist commonly on emulation sites and such. These are:
*Game Tiger Hallmark #8 (referred to as either "BS Tora no Maki 5-17" or "BS Tora no Taikoban 5-17")
and
*Game Tiger Hallmark #10 (referred to as either "BS Tora no Maki 5-31" or "BS Tora no Taikoban 5-31")
Furthermore, rumors abound about the existence of :
*Game Tiger Hallmark #52 (usually called "BS Game Tora no Taikoban 3-21")
and
*Game Tiger Hallmark #53 (usually called "BS Game Tora no Taikoban 3-28")
In fact, a number of
screenshots exist for Game Tiger Hallmark #53.
It appears that there was a 1999 website that specialized in providing "pirate" versions of these ROMs, and I would have been very interested in knowing which ones they had if only
this wasn't the closest I could get...
As far as video is concerned, I've found copies of the
May 3, 1995 Lair of the Game Tiger, and I also found a video of a copy of an
unknown episode of Lair of the Game Tiger Special (1, 2, or 3) (this one is thanks to Kiddo)
And that pretty much is the extent of what I've accomplished. Absolutely nothing in the way of any Zelda-related material. With that I'll leave it up to the next historian to take up from where I left off. I haven't done thorough investigations for any volumes except the Zelda ones whose article names I listed above. Good luck to whoever wants to continue the search.
PS - one last scrap I found quite interesting. We've all, whether we admit it or not, at one point or another wished that Nintendo would just re-release some of these Satellaview-only games and versions and Ura episodes. We've all been hoping for Nintendo to come through for us but to no avail. Well it turns out that the makers of some of these games have signed a pact with the dark side and it looks like they've released some of the Satellaview material for PlayStation. My Japanese is very poor so it may be that these games were released for PlayStation concurrently with the Satellaview broadcasts or even before, but nonetheless...
An obscure game called The SFC Athena (アテナがSFC) was released for PlayStation and it looks like it contains versions of BS Monopoly and BS Dezaemon. For your viewing pleasure here are some links:
link1 and
link2.
Cheers, -MH

If this helps you any -
http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm3187929On here is another recording of the program (preceded by a seemingly different program)
Notably it seems like that specific episode is about an interview with Takahashi Meijin, Hudson's game-development celebrity.
I'll be looking up your bit on SFC Athena in a moment - it looks deliciously juicy!
EDIT:
The game referred to in RandnetDD's article seems to be able to be obtained on Amazon.jp for dirt cheap.
http://www.amazon.co.jp/%E3%82%A2%E3%83%86...9/dp/B00005OUZ7Searching "Monopoly PS" leads me to it's boxart - it's possible a version of Monopoly is indeed on there.
I can't find anything on Dezaemon being in this though - I do recall a Playstation Dezaemon release of some sort (It's been a multi-consoler from the beginning, it seems), but I'm not sure of any ties to the Satellaview content.
MadHatter - March 21, 2009 11:07 PM (GMT)
Yeah I'm not really sure about whether or not SFC Athena has the BS versions after all.
Compare Monopoly screenshots from:
SFC Athena MonopolyBS Monopoly - Road to BoardwalkSNES Monopolyand
NES MonopolyI'm not sure why I thought that was Satellaview-related.
I think Dezaemon may be on SFC Athena, though, due to what it says at the BioMetal article... But it's hard to translate. Maybe Athena SFC is just made by the same people who made Dezaemon or something...?
Duke Serkol - March 22, 2009 12:12 AM (GMT)
The Athena monopoly pic doesn't seem to work... server down?
MadHatter - March 22, 2009 12:55 AM (GMT)
Wow. I've been having bad luck with links recently.
Well
here is a working link, but you have to scroll down a bit.
It's the 6th image under the words "POST CARD" (header reads: バンカース(モノポリもどき) which translates to something like "Banker's Trust (Monopoly clone)")
Duke Serkol - March 22, 2009 12:58 AM (GMT)
Eh, I should just have copied the link and pasted it in the address bar. I think I did too much playtesting... and it's not over yet.

I believe Athena is credited in all the Dezaemon games, if that helps you.
As for BS Monopoly - the gameplay is apparently based on the Japan-only "The Monopoly Game 2"

Oh Athena the software house, I thought it was Athena the SNK character...
KiddoCabbusses - March 22, 2009 02:10 PM (GMT)
That gives a whole new meaning to "SFC Athena". One I'm not sure many would like.
... I'd prefer SFC King of Fighters.
Duke Serkol - March 22, 2009 02:50 PM (GMT)
Did Athena the software house ever produce something that is actually noteworthy?
I can't remember.
MadHatter - March 22, 2009 02:52 PM (GMT)
They did some Dezaemon titles...
Otherwise no not really unless you're a mahjong person and let's be honest - who is?
KiddoCabbusses - March 29, 2009 11:56 AM (GMT)
Right, so I guess we should move on to something else.
MadHatter, have you found anything on the supposed "BS Torneko no Daibouken"?
I noted it's appearance in the 7-minute Satellaview ad, but that is quite literaally the only thing I can find that references it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DS1uG0u1R4o
MadHatter - March 29, 2009 04:29 PM (GMT)
Hah. I've seen this video several times. As far as Satellaview ads I think it's one of the best. I may or may not have even ripped a copy for myself. But still I never noticed that before. For others who are lazy, the "BS Torneko no Daibouken" segment begins at 6:47.
I've actually done a little hunting for references to this game myself, but have been largely unsuccessful. Perhaps it was just an idea they were toying with that they eventually canceled? After all I don't think there's anything in the 7-second clip that doesn't appear in the normal Torneko no Daibouken, is there? Could this be the first confirmation of a canceled game for Satellaview? I think the most clue-filled portions of the video are the broadcast time shots at 2:36-2:37 (let's call this clip A), 2:37-2:40 (clip B ), 2:40-2:42 (C ), and 2:42-2:46 (D).
I started transcribing them to find what period of dates we're talking about here, and from what I can see it looks like this is from Aug. 1995 or later. Perhaps if we got a full trancription of those data tables we could better place "BS Torneko no Daibouken" temporally. I have to say I was complaining about transcribing/translating JPGs earlier... well this is even worse than that. For portions like clips B and D, the kanji is actually clearest when the video clip is playing, so this means many rewinds.
So far I transcribed clip A and the very start of clip B, but I really don't have the time right now to spend any more time with this. Here's what I have so far:
Clip A:

Clip B:
17:00 - 門田??マガジン (the ?'s = characters I can't read)
17:30 - ゲーム虎の大穴 マガジン
(17:30) - BSゼルダの伝説 ?び? マガジン (the ?'s = characters I can't read)
18:00 - BSゼルダの伝説
...
MH's notes:
1)Clip A, 14:30 & 14:40 - Who'd have thought, eh?
2)Clip B, (17:30) - the part in brackets doesn't show up on-screen, it's just blank but it's placed below the 17:30 Game Tora entry so I assume maybe it was the contents of that issue of Game Tora? Or maybe it was a "バグポタミア神殿"-type thing? Who knows. It really interests me, but I just can't make out the characters. Any help in this regard would be greatly appreciated. I fear the first "?" may simply be indecipherable but the second "?" looks to me like either "ん", "ち", "れ", or "カ". Any input on which of those seems closest would be great. Or if anyone has any other better ideas I'd love to hear what you think that means. It's BS Zelda-related so it should be of common interest to everyone here.
3)The Pasofami reference seems to suggest that:
"ころんらんど" was broadcast Aug 21, 1995
"ピコピコパイレーツ" was broadcast Aug 2, 1995
"ザ・心理ゲーム3" was broadcast Aug 5, 1995
"ガンガンガンチャン" was broadcast Oct 19, 1995
"ゲーム虎の大穴" was broadcast
"BSゼルダの伝説" was of course broadcast in Aug 1995
So it looks to me like we're definitely talking about a 1995 time-period for BS Torneko no Daibouken and this sadly falls without Kameb's tables so there's no way to verify. I would say this looks pretty strongly like Aug 1995 too except for "ガンガンガンチャン". I wonder if Pasofami lists the rerun or if all of the other games are reruns. I'm not sure which is more likely...
KiddoCabbusses - March 29, 2009 05:02 PM (GMT)
As I haven't found any references to it whatsoever, and the standard game would be too large to fit on an 8M Memory Pack, I currently hold the theory that it was canned in favor of BS-ing it's successor, Fuurai no Shiren.
I really want that checked throughly, though.
MadHatter - March 29, 2009 06:36 PM (GMT)
I shouldn't be pessimistic, but I think you'd have to start bidding on Satellaview Tsushin or old Famitsu magazine auctions if you wanted any info directly on this issue. I feel like coverage a of canceled title is pretty obscure...
EDIT2: Clip D shows what looks to be the November 7 broadcast of RPGツクールBSくれくれ猛レース. From Kameb's site we can knock off 1996 and 1997 as being the year. We're left with 1995, 1998, and 1999. I'm leaning toward 1995.

KiddoCabbusses - March 29, 2009 11:43 PM (GMT)
I'll give you thoughts once my computer can read JP Fonts again. (Issues. Reformat. Don't have a proper "East ASian Language" pack.)
Since I doubt Torneko no Daibouken would come -after- Fuurai no Shiren, I'd count out any timeframe after Shiren's release (which was December 1996 if I recall.) - would leave us with the Feb. 1995-Dec. 1996 timeframe to look up whether anything came from it.
MadHatter - December 4, 2009 04:14 AM (GMT)
Kind of a necro bump here...
It turns out that like most things, my excitement from earlier in the thread was for nothing. I finally went back and figured out what the characters were, and the only thing this tells us is that the official name for the "How to Play BS Zelda" broadcast file (mentioned on Kameb's site) is actually "BS The Legend of Zelda How to Play Magazine" (BSゼルダの伝説 遊び方 マガジン).
I'd still really like to know when this contents of the commercial are from, though. All I can tell for sure is that part of it was filmed in November. I suspect the year is 1995 which might indicate that a BS version of Torneko no Daiboken was merely planned, or it could mean that the game is terrifically rare due to the fact that early broadcasts ran a greater risk of being recorded over especially if there were no reruns. If anyone can help me place it chronologically that would be awesome.
The best way I think would be the timetables. Again I've broken the portions between 2:36 and 2:46 (the best quality version of the film, by the way, is [url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DS1uG0u1R4o&fmt=1]here[url] for reference) down into 4 sections:
Clip A - 2:36-2:37
Clip B - 2:37-2:40
Clip C - 2:40-2:42
Clip D - 2:42-2:46 (I gave up half-way through this one)
So here's my current best guess at the schedule:
KEY:
? = I don't recognize the character
[] = portions that run out of the screen but which I've completed in the most likely way.
-----{} = download location
------- = missing time in the video (all missing times are the same as the time above them)

Actually, good thing you bumped this topic - I can post this here now;
http://superfamicom.org/blog/2009/12/doubl...na-special-224/I released a ROM which features a "Game Tiger" magazine. I can't read the contents too well, but I hope you appreciate it.
I kinda suspected that "How to play BS Zelda" would be a magazine. I'll be on the lookout for it regardless. It'd be interesting if by some miracle it told us something we didn't know previously.
MadHatter - December 4, 2009 06:28 AM (GMT)
Ah. Interesting indeed. Yet more footage of
this girl. Is the picture I linked here actually contained in the Game Tora episode? Or was it taken separately but on the same day? Because the woman is wearing the same clothing...
Also the Nichibutsu Casino has always fascinated me to just due to the BS Zelda connection. To quote from the September 19, 1995 News Wall:
☆発覚! 秘密クラブ建設計画
“街”の中で鍵がかかって入れない、謎の民家。
10月1日から、ここが秘密クラブとしてオープンする。
カジノバー(カジノ・ニチブツ)になるのだ。
ただし、ここに入れるのは秘密クラブ入館証を買った人か、「BSゼルダの伝説」でトライフォースを8個手に入れた人だけだ。
ワクワクするね!
☆Secret Club construction plans revealed!
A previously locked house of mystery within the "City" opens as a secret club on October 1.
Casino Bar (Casino Nichibutsu).
However, the only people that may be admitted are those who have obtained eight pieces of Triforce and who gained the secret club entrance certificate from "BS The Legend of Zelda".
How exciting!
(rough translation)
I speculate that this was the reason for the secret password at the end of BSZ1.
KiddoCabbusses - December 4, 2009 09:18 PM (GMT)
When you put it that way... the header date on this download is 10/15.
... O_o;
Con, Duke, should we maybe move this to the BS Zelda discussion area? It seems as though I hit something without even initially realizing it!
Duke Serkol - December 5, 2009 01:38 AM (GMT)
Sure I can do that if you'd like... but now we need some information as to what happened at that secret meeting with the winners that completed BS Zelda :)
MadHatter - December 5, 2009 03:32 AM (GMT)
I wonder if there'd be anything in the Nichibutsu Casino code relating to it. Especially if this dump was the Nichibutsu Casino episode broadcast immediately after the News Wall post.
I was curious to see whether the Satellaview Tsushin transcripts at Kameb's site mentioned anything about it. The closest I could find was
this issue (confusingly called the October issue in the upper left of the cover but covering September 1-30 as shown in the lower left) which has this to say:
かべ新聞に注目せよ!
* ヘッドラインニュース
* 特報!!BSゼルダの伝説
Pay attention to the newspapers or all!
*Headline
*Dispatch!! BS The Legend of Zelda
I think these transcripts are pretty incomplete though. And I think the actual magazine might have more to say. I haven't seen anything else relating to this sadly.

What I'd like to know is how a "Secret meeting" even -works-. O_o
It seems to be something software-based, the BIOs itself, that gave you an opportunity to download the "Secret Club" Casino games off St.GIGA. Would a special radio program accompany it?
Duke Serkol - December 5, 2009 12:25 PM (GMT)
Oh, so essentially completing a game warrants a set of gambling minigames?
But could the download for those be pourchased by those who didn't make it in BS Zelda?
Mh...

Sorry about the double post, but for what it's worth I guess the Sep 28 news wall post suggests that you have the Sunday broadcast, Kiddo.
In other news, as always I'm trying to keep an eye out for BS Torneko no Daiboken stuff. I recently ran across
this Satellaview music page on Nico Nico. It mentions Torneko no Daiboken in context with BS Shiren the Wanderer, but sadly my Japanese isn't good enough to make out what the connection (if any) is between TnD and the Satellaview. I mean why mention the game at all? Anyway it may be (and in fact probably is) nothing, but either way I was curious if we already knew about all the listed Satellaview tracks. I know we know all the Zelda ones.
KiddoCabbusses - December 8, 2009 06:13 PM (GMT)
From what I've read on it, the reference to Torneko no Daibouken seems to be in reference to the original SFC Cart version (which was the first game in the "Fushigi no Dungeon" line. "Shiren the Wanderer" is the second game in the series, and BS Fuurai no Shiren is based off that game entry.
Nothing specifically about the BS Torneko no Daibouken appears. :(
MadHatter - December 8, 2009 08:56 PM (GMT)
So I guess they're just talking about TnD as the precursor to the Mystery Dungeon series then? I was worried that's what it would be.
I take it we're familiar with all of the other Satellaview songs discussed as well?
KiddoCabbusses - December 8, 2009 09:13 PM (GMT)
I'll take a look at the Famicom TAntei Club listing thing. The rest I already am all familiar with.
(EDIT: Oh. Just Game Music Grafitti. Nevermind.)

I had a few thoughts about Kouryaku Casino. Nothing too breathtaking, but having "played" the rom finally, more support emerges for the idea that this was the one discussed in the NewsWall posts.
Specifically, this line:
| QUOTE (MadHatter @ Dec 5 2009, 07:10 PM) |
| マンホールで入館証(5万G)を買っていくこと! |
from the Sept. 21 post (given in full above) makes my inability to play more meaningful.
When I try to play the game (via Snes9x), I keep getting a message that looks like this:
| QUOTE |
5000Gないとカジノにはいれません がんばつて. おかねをためてね♥ |
and I can't actually get to the games. I wonder how they transmitted the information about how many triforces the player had earned in BSZ to Kouryaku Casino. Presumably the 8 triforces were transformed into the required 5kG somehow.
Could it be that the Kouryaku Casino over-wrote the BSZ portion of the 8M memory pack without overwriting the portion relating to triforces? Did new games tend to blank the 8M packs before writing to them or did they just overwrite them leaving scraps?
My original idea was that it was password-based, but Kouryaku Casino seems to have no prompts for passwords. It somehow already knows that I don't have the 5kG required to enter. Perhaps a password was entered prior to even downloading the game? That would render the error message I get duplicative, though. Unless like Duke suggested there were other ways to get the needed 5kG besides getting 8 triforces.
Also, does this happen on bsnes too? Is there any way to get to the casino games short of DLing the normal (non-SAT) SNES version?

*eh-hem-hem*
If I didn't make it clear from the blog post I made with the ROM uploads, the game plays -normally- on BSNES. As in, you actually can play it. As opposed to what you described. What emulator were you using?

| I try to play the game (via Snes9x) |
I wouldn't be very surprised if the game ran on bsnes and didn't run at all on snes9x, but the game actually does run on Snes9x. It just stops at an in-game status-check failure. There's a graphic with the hostess of the Casino telling you that you don't have sufficient funds (or so I gathered...).
In other words there must be something about bsnes that fools it into thinking that 5000G are available. Or, to put it differently, there must be something about snes9x that fools it into thinking that the required 5000G are missing. I wonder what the difference is.
Does bsnes ever display this:
| QUOTE |
5000Gないとカジノにはいれません がんばつて. おかねをためてね♥ |
KiddoCabbusses - January 22, 2010 04:14 AM (GMT)
BSNES goes into the actual roulette game. I don't know what I'd need to do to get the 5000G message.
MadHatter - January 22, 2010 08:05 AM (GMT)
KiddoCabbusses - January 22, 2010 08:20 AM (GMT)
Well, I mean, in BSNES itself. :P Obviously I'm referring more to the "I don't know what would trigger such a thing for real", as opposed to SNES0X's emulation issues.
MadHatter - January 22, 2010 05:06 PM (GMT)
Yeah I guess that's the question. It's interesting thought inasmuch as it seems to me related to the 9/21/95 News Wall post.
If I had to guess, I'd say it seems to be a difference between the way Snes9X and BSNES treat the basic "ground-state" of the game. So the way I see it there's got to be some kind of a
| CODE |
IF G >= 5000; THEN Roulette(G); ELSE Print "5000Gないとカジノにはいれませんがんばつて. おかねをためてね♥"
|
kind of logic test at the start of the game where BSNES starts with "G" set to 5000 or more and with Snes9X starting with "G" at 0. So in other words there would be no way for you to trigger the message through BSNES. Obviously the code I put up is just a hypothetical, but the real question would be how it checks your initial "G."
Where did the ROM come from? Do you know if it's been hacked to give the player 5000G when played in BSNES? I wouldn't be surprised it it was a little modified since the "Go back to town" part of the start menus brings you directly back to the casino titlescreen. I'd imagine that originally it would crash at that point since there's no "town with no name" to return to...
KiddoCabbusses - January 22, 2010 05:56 PM (GMT)
Callis dumped this ROM off an actual 8M Memory Pack. There is -no reason- to believe it has any actual modifications.
MadHatter - January 22, 2010 08:43 PM (GMT)
I know nothing about it, but I thought raw dumps often had to be modified slightly. I thought headers and whatnot were often added/altered. Can you actually use just a raw dump with an emulator? Can you use all raw dumps?
I certainly meant no disrespect for integrity of the rom, btw. I'm just trying to figure out why it would run differently on the two emulators. The "error message" I get doesn't really seem to be a "emulation issue" to me. So as much as I agree with you that we shouldn't -believe- my hypotheticals, surely it doesn't hurt to speculate, right? A BSNES-specific hack that let the player bypass the initial 5000G check would possibly explain it if indeed the rom was modified. If this is just an unmodified raw dump, then of course we need a better theory. Did you have anything in mind?
MadHatter - January 24, 2010 06:23 AM (GMT)
Just to clarify, this question is an open question to all forum members. Can raw dumps run on emulators unmodified? Does anybody know about this sort of thing?

If the header you're referring to is the internal header, it's in the ROM dump as well as any other game's ROM dump in most circumstances, save the unusual (like the "AK Live Hit Gang" ROM which had chunks of it missing possibly due to it being flagged for deletion.) or Data Pack ROMs (which seem not to have headers depending on the game it/'s associated with.)
For Callis's dumping method, he has a unique tool developed by d4s to dump 8M Memory Packs on a ROM Copier as though they are typical cartridges. It makes the dumping process similar to a typical ROM copier dumper. We do not know how other people may dump packs (Callis speculates the Japanese dumpers do it through direct Flash ROM dumping, which involves destroying the actual pack to get to the data. Ouch.)
In the download pack for the Kouryaku Casino Bar ROM, the ROM with the Casino ROM as well as the Game Tora no Ooana SPECIAL ROM is the "raw dump" (A complete memory pack dump). Any ROM that fills up an 8M Memory Pack to it's entirety is also a raw dump (This includes -ALL- the Soundlink games, most of the SFC ports and a good chunk of the other original games). Games that are smaller than 8M though are usually data split from a "Raw dump". While the ethics of this for integrity's sake might be debatable, Callis has split up data into portions for a technical reason - I believe he said before that if the data isn't split, it becomes interleaved or something like that. Either way, he believes he's in the right on this for the proper "preservation" end, but I've advised him to keep track of all his "raw data" dumps as well.
Also on the emulation side, BSNES is the only emulator that can actually boot two different executables off of a "raw dump" - Just check the Kouryaku Casino Bar ROM there.
