Title: Shibuyah's spriting thread
Description: This is where I'll post my sprites. :3
Shibuyah - November 30, 2009 12:15 AM (GMT)
Well...I said I'd make one earlier, but I got sidetracked. ^ ^;
So right now, I'll just start this off with recent stuff, and add onto this post as I get more I want to post.
Do first off, I did some Zelda:ALttP style sprites just now, to see how well I do.

This is..my rendition of Link for an ALttP hack/styled fangame.
The reason I have two of the same pose, and a red line between, is because one isn't wearing a belt, and the other is.(I'm also not sure which side view head is best, and which "just woke up" head to use)
I also have six different palettes, and I'm not sure which one's to use for his tunics. ^ ^;

...Oh look, and edit to the male and female mascots to resemble the first BS Zelda, a fat wolf king, wolf gaurds, and a kinda generic princess.
Any advice on changes to make, and even how to make the princess less generic would be greatly appreciated. ^ ^;
MadHatter - November 30, 2009 01:43 AM (GMT)
For the side-profile shot I prefer the third from the top.
The belt or no belt question is really hard. They both look good.
I'm not sure what the question is about the "just woke up" head. I see 5 forward-facing faces in various states of wakefulness. Is the question just between the two with a red line between them?

Okay, thanks MadHatter. :3
As for the "just woke up" head, it's the two under the sprites of holding his sword in the air.
By the way, do you have any ideas what changes I could make to the princess to make her less...generic? ^ ^;
MadHatter - November 30, 2009 08:19 PM (GMT)
I would prefer the bottom "just woke up" face.
As far as the princess is concerned, a crown/tiara would make her look more like a princess I would think. Apart from that (and I hate to say this, but...) princesses are always pretty generic in games. They have almost no personality usually.

M'kay, I think that's the one I'm currently using, but I'll check. :3
As for the princess, your right, not many of them stood out too well in games. ^ ^;
..That's why I wanna make her different from that, if you know what I mean. :3
But overall, thanks for your thoughts Mad hatter. ^w^
coinilius - December 1, 2009 02:07 AM (GMT)
Maybe you just need to really think her out a bit - is she ment to be a generic princess, is she Zelda? This is an ALttP hack/fan game concept, right? Maybe you could change her hair a bit, give her a more interesting hairstyle or a hat or better crown - I think she already does have a tiara or something in her hair?

Hmm...that's a good point Coinilius.
Okay, I'll look into it, thanks for the tips. ^w^

The wolf men sprites look good, btw - is there going to be a wolf princess as well? :P

Probably, but I want to think of a cute design for her first. There might even be a prince. :3
By the way..

Little update on Link.
Added more heads, and a couple more poses.
I think overall, it's turning out pretty well. ^w^
Which of the pushing/lifting faces do you guys like best? I personally like the gritting ones best, since they seem a bit more realistic and serious. :3
MadHatter - December 1, 2009 12:37 PM (GMT)
It depends what you're going for. The character looks pretty Link-ish so if you're trying to go for that then the red face reminds me most of Link from the main series. The gritting teeth face seems more accurate to to real life to me too, though. So I guess I'd say if you're trying to make the character as Link-like as possible I'd go with red face otherwise go with gritted teeth.
I agree with coin, by the way. The wolfmen are great.
coinilius - December 1, 2009 01:05 PM (GMT)
The gritted teeth slightly win out for me, though they are both good - it would really come down to personal preference I think.

Thanks for the input MadHatter.
For the Wolfmen, I used the head of the wolf you see in BS Marvelous:Camp Arnold as reference, but merely edited it for the king. ^ ^;
But I'm glad you like it, and thanks for your opinion. :3

I think I agree, I like the gritted teeth better, so I'll just stick with that. ^w^

Well, I've thought of a pretty cute design for Zelda, but I'm not too sure that I was able to nail it this time.

But it's definately a step in the right direction. :3
I was aiming to give her long-ish bangs in front, and long hair in the back, but I'm not quite sure how to go about that.(Also unsure how to shade her hair) ^ ^;
..Maybe if I keep whacking at it, I'll get it. :D
coinilius - December 3, 2009 04:03 AM (GMT)
Not bad as a start but the hair does need a bit of work done on shading - it all sort of melds together a bit too much at the moment.

Yeah, I agree, I'm not too happy with it either. < <;
I'll keep hacking at it though, so hopefully I can fix this. ^ ^;
coinilius - December 3, 2009 05:23 AM (GMT)
Just adding some shading to break it up a bit should work fine - just to give it a little depth ^_^
Shibuyah - December 6, 2009 03:23 AM (GMT)
Alrighty, I think I finished a basic stance for Zelda.

Not too sure about the hair, but I like how she turned out. ^w^
And now, for an explanation on this version of Zelda, if that's alright.
This incarnation of Zelda is Link's childhood friend, and has no idea she's a princess.
She first appeared in Link's village eight years ago, and Link was the first to befriend her.
They've been friends since they can remember, even with the village bum, whose taken time to teach Link how to use a sword for self-defense.(I've yet to sprite the bum, but I have an overall design in my head)
Also, I've done a shield style conversion.

This will be the first shield Link will get to use. :3
Shibuyah - December 8, 2009 03:42 AM (GMT)
Okay, uhh..this is a question I feel I should ask, so pardon the bump. ' ';
I've been thinking: is Links shirt too short or anything?
I put the sprites in ALttP and to me it seemed a bit short.
What're your opinions though?
MadHatter - December 8, 2009 04:24 AM (GMT)
It seems OK to me. I guess if there were no belt then it would seem longer. Perhaps you could just thin the belt a bit?

Well, I guess I could try that. I'll see if it helps, thanks MadHatter. ^w^
coinilius - December 8, 2009 06:31 AM (GMT)
Zelda's hair looks better now - more refined and easier to see the hairstyle you're aiming for. Just looking at the Link sprite by itself he seems alright, so if he is a little shorter I don't think it's much of a problem.

Thanks coinilius, I tried my hardest on it. ^w^
And, I was actually aiming to make them the same height, since they're the same age.(13 I think)
So..I'm not sure if I'm measuring right age-wise. ^ ^;
MadHatter - December 8, 2009 09:02 PM (GMT)
Although... Aren't girls like a foot taller than boys at age 13? I wonder when the Hylian growth-spurt occurs? :D

Hmm, I didn't know that...guess I'll have to have them both be Hylians, or something. ^ ^;
coinilius - December 9, 2009 01:07 AM (GMT)
Haha although I don't know if I'd be so worried about that given the style... although that could be interesting to make Zelda a little taller than Link.

Well, I actually had a thought like this: Link and Zelda would be the same height, but when they're older, Link would be 2/3 inches taller than Zelda.
..I'm not sure if that's logical though. ^ ^;

Well, I had a recent idea for a character to add to the game, after playing Minish Cap, and meeting Vaati for the first time.
I began to imagine Vaati in my Zelda game, how he'd be like a rival to Link, and go bad later.*But would be rescued later*
So..here's a comparison of link, Zelda in Princess attire, and Vaati in his Dark garb.

How does he look?
coinilius - December 10, 2009 03:10 PM (GMT)
Looks pretty good - something seems slightly off about the hair over his eye, though - I think the shading just needs some work there, it's too light compared to the rest of his hair and so stands out a bit to much and doesn;t quite look like the hair slick it is supposed to be

Okay, I'll work on it. Thanks Coinilius. ^w^
Shibuyah - March 9, 2012 10:37 PM (GMT)
Wow, I haven't been here in a LONG time--hi everybody, how's it going? 8D
So, I'm sorry for such a long absence, I didn't mean to stay gone as long as I have. < <;
I hope you guys can forgive me for that--and if anyone has a DeviantArt account, I do as well. Right here:
http://shibuyah-kun.deviantart.com/To start off again, I've been playing Four Swords Anniversary edition, and Links Awakening on my 3DS, so I got to thinking about my Zelda idea again--I hadn't touched in a long while, and wanted to upgrade it, but I didn't want to use the same graphic-style as Four Swords/Minish Cap.
But inspiration struck, and I have something that I feel is a rather interesting take on what I had envisioned.

Here is the cast thus far--the three main characters, and their teacher(remember the fat wolf from earlier in this thread--this is him, but a lot healthier and taller. XD), Alreid.
Link now wears visible Brown shorts, brown sleeves on his tunic, and a blue band right behind his wrist--in his alternate Tunic colors, the lighter brown on the aforementioned clothing changes to a different color, to give the illusion that it's a whole different color.
Zelda, still the same for the most part, but I decided to give her a flower in her village-girl garb.(Still plotting the princess dress)
As for Vaati, I tried to make him seem more unique than what I had before, which was
heavily based on his Minish Cap appearance.
To show that this Vaati is human, and not a monster like the Vaati of Legend, his skin isn't pale--he's full-blooded Hylian, while this incarnation of Link is only a half-Hylian(which explains his normal sized ears).
And Alreid, Link's Wolfos mentor, and Father figure to the kids of the orphanage, teaches Link how to handle himself in battle, and also plays an important role in Link's quest.

And here's what I have for Link so far--his four tunics(Purple one requested by my Brother), five out of several shields, two out of several swords, a Walking animation, and mock-stances of Link holding each shield.*Also, notice the Hylian shield? It and the Master Sword are going to be cameo-items of sorts that are a bit hard to get~*
Sounds--and looks--like a lot, doesn't it? Well, I
am planning on there being a lot of options if I could get this off the ground.
For instance, while each shield and sword would have upsides, such as the second sword above being stronger, and faster, it doesn't have as much reach as his default sword--and the Rising Hawk shield(The pink-ish one above--my own creation~)would be lighter, allowing him to 'soar', wouldn't offer as good defenses as the standard wooden shield because of it's light materials.
See, I'm conceptualizing making this have a tad of RPG elements in it--just no leveling up. You don't level up in the Zelda games anyway to my knowledge, you just get better equipment.
Anyway, I was thinking that Link would have 'stats', like Strength, Defense, and the like--nothing major, just the basics.
Depending on what Shield and sword he equips, he could even out the decreases, or heavily raise a certain aspect. Probably not the best idea for a Zelda game, but it would add a bit of strategy to what Link equips, right? XD
Still, since I can't program to save my life at the moment, I don't think I'll be going anywhere much with this, except for graphics and a dream. But, God knows what will happen down the road, so it just might happen someday.
And sorry for rambling on like that guys--I know I just came back, but I felt that I wanted to share what I had conceptualized for it so far, and get opinions and stuff from other Zelda fans. 'w'

Your skills have improved dramaticly since the last time you were here!
I see on your DA page you've made sprites for a sidescroller too. Did you try making any backgrounds?

Thanks Duke, I agree from a personal stand-point. I'm not sure what God has planned for me, but I'm very thankful he gave me my pixeling abilities and know-how. ^w^
Well, I haven't tried it yet--I did try once, but it didn't turn out so great.
I guess I feel that backgrounds and tiles are a bit...I don't know, daunting? I'm sure if I tried as hard as I could, I could do it, but I guess I'm just too worried it'll turn out badly.
Something I need to get over. < <;
Although, while I may focus on creating character graphics, I'll try to get past my uncomfort of backgrounds and tiles.
Duke Serkol - March 10, 2012 03:05 PM (GMT)
You know what's really hard? Creating foreground tiles and a background that can meld together (i.e. having objects that extend from the foreground into the background).
It's something that's been stumping me.
Shibuyah - March 18, 2012 07:23 PM (GMT)
Yeah, that does sound hard--I hope we both find out how that works. :3

Here's the final walking animation, shield included. It feels a tad fast, but it certainly looks like he's running! What do you guys think?
MasterOfPuppets - March 18, 2012 07:50 PM (GMT)
Very good! Must have taken a lot of work to get his far!

Yeah, it took a little research on my part to figure out how exactly to animate the hair and shield--but, it also took a little planning with the swords and shields too. :3
