Nadi sighed grumpily as she trudged into her 9:55 World Lit 101 class. It was an ugly hour of the day to be awake, really, but she had to take morning classes so she could work her afternoon shift at the vintage clothing store in town. It paid fairly well, and she got discounts on cool, vintage (occasionally designer) clothes, so it was worth it, sort of. Still...morning=blah.

She dropped her messenger bag on the floor next to her usual seat and plopped in the chair, pulling a pencil out of the bag, putting her hair in a messy bun with it. It was still sort of damp from her shower, and she did NOT want wet hair on her neck in this frigid classroom at 9:55 in the morning, when she hasdn't even properly awakened yet.

Slowly, other students started to filter in and the professor began passing out a set of freshly copied and stapled papers. Nadya looked down at her own with mild interest, noting that it was the instructions and guidelines for the research project and presentation. She chewed on her bottom lip as she read over the assignment. They were to pick three works from the ones that had been read this semester and compare and contrast the themes of disappointment and disillusionment in them, plus doing a presentation on the events going on in the world when the works were being written.

She started to get an overwhelmed, panicky feeling until her eyes continued farther down the page and read that they would be assigned a partner to split the workload and present with. Relief flooded over her as the teacher started handing out partner assignments. Finally, she heard her name called (the weirdo prof. was working backwards alphabetically), "Filipov," the teacher's eyes spotted her, "You're going to be partnered with Banor."

Once the professor was done calling out pairings, she let everyone move so they could discuss the three pieces they wanted to work on. Nadi grabbed her bag and sat down next to Max with a shy smile, "I was thinking...what about Hedda Gabler, Gulliver's Travels, and Tartuffe? They'd be fairly easy to do, but interesting at the same time, you know? What do you think?"

When the alarm had gone off it had been met with resistance. It went off several more times with nine minutes in between each, but Max still each time refused to unbury himself from the blankets and pillows piled over him. He’d worked a late shift at the bar and to him it seemed as though he’d just barely gotten to sleep. He laid in bed a little longer before he guilted himself to his feet to get showered and dressed. The grounds were cool as he cut across them heading towards one of the large buildlings that housed the classrooms and lecture halls. His hands were shoved deep into the hooded sweatshirt he pulled over a wrinkled tshirt to keep warm.

Arriving a few moments before the class began, he dropped down into a seat off to the side of the room half way between the front and back most seats. It was then that he pulled out a notebook and another book and got to work. Not on World Lit, but on his afternoon math course. He hadn’t had a chance to do the assignment the professor had given him. Luckily math wasn’t such a hard subject for him to grasp.

He muttered a thanks as the teacher’s aid walked around the room passing out papers. He’d barely glanced at it before he went back to writing down the answer to a rather difficult derivitive assigned for extra credit. Frankly he’d take what he could get for points, extra credit or not.

"Filipov," the teacher's eyes spotted her, "You're going to be partnered with Banor."

It’s not that he was ignoring the professor as much as he just didn’t hear him.

"I was thinking...what about Hedda Gabler, Gulliver's Travels, and Tartuffe? They'd be fairly easy to do, but interesting at the same time, you know? What do you think?"

Her presence didn’t register to him until she spoke causing him to look up at her and blink. What? Gulliver’s travels? It was a fleeting glance of confusion before he realized just what was going on. He slowly closed the book and pushed it aside turning his attention towards the class assignment. Partners? Oh. He was pretty sure that anything he said at this point would start them off on the wrong foot. He’d already managed to do that by not paying attention. Again.

“Easy yeah,” he said flipping through the assignment looking for the available choices. Yes he didn’t want to have to tackle anything to difficult. And judging by some of the other titles…

“Good choices.”

Nadi watched with mildly amused interest as he caught up to what was going on. She couldn't blame him, the guy was doing math homework...yuck. It was her least favorite subject, and the one she was most deficient in. It took him a moment to register her presence after she spoke, but she really didn't mind, and gave him an encouraging smile to show it as he closed the math book and pushed it aside to look over the list and consider her ideas.

“Easy yeah, good choices.”

She beamed at his approval, liking him already, which was surprising given her history. Tilting her head and studying him momentarily, she smirked, "I'll tell you what...how about I give you my number, my school email, and my IM handles, and you get in touch with me tonight. You finish your assignment, and I'll read over the requirements for this one and try to have a plan worked out by the time you get in touch. Sound good?"

It was a rhetorical question, really, as she was already scribbling her information down on a piece of notebook paper. She handed it to him and let her eyes drift back to the assignment paper:

ORAL AND WRITTEN PROJECT/RESEARCH PAPER

Objective: To integrate your knowledge of the historical and literary context of given works of literature into a comprehensive product, showing the various influences on the literature while researching the themes of disillusionment and disappointment in various works of literature.

What should be in your project:
1. Historical/Literary Context: A historical and literary context paper summarizing the important events, literature, and theories related to the works about which you're writing.
a. 350-700 words
b. You should use at least two sources for information on this, one of which can be your textbook.
c. Because this is a very short paper, you should not use more than two quotations--summarize or paraphrase everything else.
d. You must cite ALL information, whether from your textbook or other sources, using MLA format.
2. Analysis of Themes: Explore the implications of the themes of disillusionment and disappointment from some portions of the three works you choose to compare and contrast.
a. 500-1000 words
b. This is an analysis, not a summary. You should have a thesis that you're trying to prove.
c. You should use at least two other sources in addition to your text. You must cite ALL information, using MLA format.
3. Extra Element: An extra element that you bring in based on your own interest.
a. Suggestions: a piece of art from the period, a piece of art that you've produced, music from the era, a mathematical analysis of anything--be creative! You have absolute freedom.
b. Explaint he relevance of what you use to the time period or the work you're analyzing.

Other Important Information:
1. Your three sections should be clearly separate and identifiable, but you do not necessarily have to start a new page or new document.
2. You may have one Works Cited page for your entire document or one for each section, however you choose. However, all works must appear on a Works Cited page.
3. You MUST cite all information by page number (for prose) or line number (for poetry & drama), even when you use only your textbook.
4. If there is even a hint of plagiarism, your grade, and your partner's, will be a 0.

Grading:
Historical/Literary Context 25%

Analysis of Themes 65%

Extra Element 10%
TOTAL 100%

Presentation: Your project should be typed in MLA format. If you do not use MLA format, your grade will be reduced by a full letter grade (10 points).

Sources: You MUST have all three of the following: (1) 1 journal/magazine/periodical source, (2) 1 book, and (3) one internet source. You will need a minimum of FOUR sources that are sufficiently varied in type and author to show breadth and depth.

What you will turn in when your final paper is due:
1. Formal Outline
2. Manuscript
3. Works Cited page
4. Printed copies of all your sources (except your text) with the information which you used highlighted. (I will not grade your paper until the sources have been submitted.) After a week, you will recieve a 0 if the sources have not been submitted.

You may include a cover page, if you wish, but a folder is not necessary. However, the paper MUST be stapled before you come to class to submit it.

What you will be graded on:
1. The usual elements of the essay: introduction with thesis statement, body with supporting details, and conclusion.
2. Logical organization of your information.
3. General good writing: varied sentence structure; vibrant language; carefully-phrased ideas; clarity of writing; standard grammar, punctuiation, and spelling.
4. Synthesis of a wide variety of sources in a mixture of paraphrase, summary, and quotation.
5. Adherence to format.
6. Avoidance of plagiarism.

REMEMBER: Your grade and your partner's grade are completely and fully co-dependent. If one of you fails, the both of you do, etc.

Nadi sighed, not liking the idea that the grades were completely co-dependent, but she was sure it was a tactic the professor used to ensure that things were done to his liking, or done at all, for that matter. This was going to be one tough assignment, but anyone who wanted to pass the class would strive to make excellent marks on it, as it was a major portion of the final grade: 25%, as a matter of fact. Sly, clever git. At least the workload would be somewhat less astronomical than if she had to do this alone. Joy, >.<, a research paper/project was exactly what she wanted to be handed first thing in the morning.

She peeked over at the Banor guy, wondering if he were finished with his assignment for math yet, but said nothing.

There was a sinking feeling in his chest as his eyes scanned over the page long assignment of what they needed to do. How was he supposed to find the time to do all of this, well part of it, and still manage to keep up with his other courses? He was just barely keeping up as it was. He flipped to the page of available literature to work from once more. Nope she’d picked the ones that he thought would be easiest. At least one of the books he’d already had to do a research paper on. It made him at least familiar with the story line.

"I'll tell you what...how about I give you my number, my school email, and my IM handles, and you get in touch with me tonight. You finish your assignment, and I'll read over the requirements for this one and try to have a plan worked out by the time you get in touch. Sound good?"

“I’ll get it read over too.” He took the paper from her after she’d written down all the information and tucked it into front of his mathematics book for safe keeping. It lay sandwiched between the front cover and the first chapter of the book. He tore off a portion of blank notebook paper and gave her the same information about himself passing it to her quietly.

His gaze darted down to page of cryptic looking numbers once more before he folded the paper in half and tucked it inside the other book; just behind the paper with her contact information. He’d be sure to find it later on when he was working again.

“I have to work tonight so I’ll have a look over it all on break and see what the professor wants.” He’d make sure to get a copy of their choices as quick as he could as well so he could start at least reading.

“I’ll get it read over too.”

Nadi quirked her lips at him in amusement. She didn't have the best people skills sometimes and silently cursed herself for sounding rude, "I had no doubt of that. You seem to have a very good work ethic. If the way you've been working on that math assignment is any indication."

She grinned at him to let him know she was only doing it all in good fun, trying to ease some of the tension the assignment had caused to, well, everyone.

“I have to work tonight so I’ll have a look over it all on break and see what the professor wants.”

Nadi nodded, "If it helps, I can pop by while you're on break and we can try and work out when we're going to have time to get this done. I'm off this afternoon. The shop where I work is closed on Wednesdays because we're open on the weekends. I'll even bring coffee. Studying of any sort should never happen without coffee. Where do you work at, anyway?"

She tilted her head and studied him for a moment. He was kind of good looking, scruffy, but it was nice. Not like Nicholas had been. Max had a pleasant sort of air about him that put her at ease where she normally wouldn't have been.

The bell sounded, singalling the end of the MWF 9:55 class, and she gave him a tentative smile, "So, would me stopping by your work be okay, or would you prefer just to IM me when you get off?"
