governor's mansion
up on the hill over looking port royal is the governor's mansion. the large white home has dozens of rooms, from the foyer to the parlor to the maid's bedroom. the house just has it all. beautifully decorated it is a home to die for. a large black gate and fence wraps around the mansion giving it a secure look. the walk way to the front door is a beautiful cobblestone path surrounded by many trees and flowers which also serve to take away from the ominous connotation of the black gates.

fort charles
standing on a bluff at the mouth of the harbor with a british flag forever flapping in the wind, fort charles is a formidable and grandiose structure with stone parapets that are lined with cannons. it looks down and over the waters of port royal in case of pirate attacks; the offices of the officers are located above the navy base which is at the base of the cliffs below the fort. elaborate ceremonies such as military promotions and weddings take place in the courtyard. the grim and dreary cell block is located underneath the fort and empty nooses hang in the gallows.

jj brown blacksmith
just another wooden building along the streets, jj brown’s blacksmith shop is where will turner worked. there are no windows, and the forge is always very dark and dimly lit by lanterns. works-in-progress are always scattered about the place- wagon wheels, wrought iron gates, pipes, even cannons with cracks in it. completed and finished works are proudly hung up and put on the wall for display. aside from the black soot, the forge is actually quite well kept, with every anvil and tool in place and the workbench well-maintained. mr. brown, the owner of the forge is almost always in the corner; in his blacksmith's apron, cradling a bottle and snoring away. and last but not least is the glowing coal furnace in the middle of the room that is powered by a lovely donkey.

vendors of all wares and stations of life flock here, trying to sell their merchandises. from humble sacks of potatoes grown by the lowly farmer to the exotic spices and jade figurines of the wealthier merchants, almost anything can be found and bought in the marketplace. many are also willing to haggle and trade, but one must be careful as the crowded square provides many opportune moments for pickpockets and thieves.

streets
many stores, smiths and beggars line the cobblestone streets of port royal. people from all stations of life mill about, going in and out of shops or just visiting with each other. occasionally there are puppeteers, acrobats or poets performing in hopes of receiving a few coins. animals run about the streets as well, whether they are a stray dog, squawking chicken, fleeing pig or braying donkey. at night the bustling streets are much more quiet, most of the roamers being whores and drunks.

docks
docking at port royal is tricky business; one must give a single shilling as well as one's name to the dock master, to tie up one's boat. the docks that hold the ships of the royal navy are kept strictly off-limits to all civilians, and are guarded at all times by at least two members of the navy. in the civilian's docks, the surroundings are more commonplace, leading towards wharf rats and the occasional beggar asking for a shilling or two. captains and crew linger, caring for their ships, and fishermen haul in loads of their scaly prey, leaving the wooden planks wet and smelling of fish. the royal navy's docks, however, are always kept pristine, and no beggars are allowed near it. rats, while sometimes found, are always killed or chased off, for no one wants to know that the navy shares its docks with rats.

royal shores
the beaches surrounding port royal are unlike what one may expect of a beach. there are no sandy shores stretching as far as the eye can see, nor does the earth gently slope into the ocean's depths. instead, there are craggy drop-offs, where the surf pounds against the rocks in an attempt to erode them into dust. the deep waters reach close to shore before sloping upwards in beach-fashion, creating a perfect port. the places that do have pale sand giving way to water usually has pebbles and stones, scattered from the city, mixing into it, creating a less-than-perfect sunning spot. yet the waters are blue and beautiful, encouraging visitors even when the sands try to drive them away.

king's arm tavern
upon opening the doors to the king's arm tavern a weary traveler is immediately greeted with the sight of a blazing fireplace. shields from knights of old are hung sporadically on the walls and a few potted plants serve to decorate the large tavern. fancy a game of poker or blackjack? pull up a chair, there is almost always a game going on although you'll find that people here don't wager as much as they do in tortuga. the beds and amenities upstairs aren't the most extravagant rooms you can find but they offer a margin of comfort while still keeping the price affordable.

the faithful bride
the faithful bride is home to the largest tavern in all of tortuga. rum flows freely here as if it were water and men are free to do as they please as long as they pay, from making secret propositions in the back darkened corner of the room getting into drunken fights that include the whole tavern. a thick smell of alcohol and cigar smoke cling heavily in the air and if there's anything the men are clinging onto harder than their rum, it's the wenches that serve the intoxicating beverages. the floor of the tavern hasn't been swabbed in ages and now has a black grimy sheen, thanks to all the sweat, grime and who knows what that's been matted down over the years. on the top floor of the tavern you'll find several beds for those weary travelers who need a place to get some shut eye for a night or two, but more often than now the noise in the bar below them is far too intruding to allow any decent amount of shuteye.

tortuga port
for all their worth pirates are very uncreative with names. the tortuga harbor is known as a pirate port; but lately, thanks to the royal navy, they've been drawing in business from honest sea merchants who can't afford to pay the additional tariffs at the other harbors. all kinds of ships, most of questionable origins, can be found docked here but as long as they pay the docking fee they have nothing to fear from the authorities. sailors and fishermen can often be seen unloading fish and goods from their vessel while pirates are often preparing for another long voyage at sea by hoarding kegs of rums.

house of ill repute
tortuga wouldn't be complete without a brothel and luckily there are a few scattered around the pirate friendly town but the largest and oldest of these establishments is located two doors down from the faithful bride. oh the irony. its a tall building with three stories there are often several women standing around in front of the 'business', chatting with each other while waiting for a patron or flirting with drunken pirates. the beds here are a bit more comfortable than those you can find in the inn and can be called one of their features, an attraction even, but you can't use the rooms alone.

alleys and paths
the roads in tortuga are always bustling with chaotic activity. at all hours of the day one is sure to find some sort of activity. it's not uncommon for fights to break out among the drunken residents of the large town and neither is the sight of women chasing men around with a large broomstick ready to beat them to a pulp. people often quicken their pace when passing by a multi-story building because you never know when someone's going to come flying out of the window. there are very few authoritative figures patrolling the streets but it wouldn't do much good it there were either because most of the guards are drunkards themselves. the alleys are dark and one can often find a scallywag or two asleep nursing a bottle of rum. the ground is filthy from all the trash littering the street, sweat and bloodshed, but what's worse is the smell.

the exchange
if you can imagine it you can often find it in tortuga, wares of all sorts can be found in the numerous stands that line the town's marketplace. most of the town's guards are located here but that still doesn't stop thieves from stealing merchandise since the guards are there more for decoration - ugly decoration at that - than protection, which is why most of the sellers carry around loaded flintlock pistols and cutlasses. it isn't rare to hear gunshots go off here. if you can't find something in the more 'honest' traders it's easy to seek out a more questionable street seller a few yards outside of the main exchange. the auction platform is a wooden three foot tall stand located near the bazaar. it's used to sell off rare items recovered by the resident pirates or to auction off wenches for brides. the platform's been around for years and makes a dull creaking sound with every step. the wooden legs are starting to rot and crack but as long as there is less than four hundred pounds there isn't much danger of breaking...right?

pigsty
a muddy area surrounded by a rickety old wooden fence, some of the railings have already been half broken off and have been replaced by old, used, empty wooden barrels in an attempt to keep the swine in. every now and then a few of the large rotund creatures break loose but more often than not a pirate will find his way into the pen while in a drunken stupor and decide to use the large creatures as a pillow.

graveyard and caverns
just outside of town is the burial ground of many a sailors. not many people venture through here because pirates don't tend to have many familial ties and the gravedigger isn't the friendliest of men. the caverns are located inside the graveyard and is quite a walk away from the main town that dominates tortuga, surrounded by craggy hills and thick trees. once free of the foliage, one can see a rather large cove, surrounded by walls of rock. who knows what is hidden deep within these caverns?

the green man
although it is often believed that the green, leaf-surrounded face on the metal sign outside this bar is a reference to the ‘spirit of the woods’, some people think it is based more on the legend of robin hood – that notorious noble-turned-outlaw who was so wanted by the sheriff. of course, being based in tortuga, that would be the more reasonable choice. unlike so many bars in the pirate-port, the green man is well respected and well-known. owned by abigail lloyd, the inside is cheery and homey, as well as kept as clean as possible. weaponry of all kinds dot the wall behind the bar and the rest of the walls are covered in random objects…and a fireplace. a trapdoor in one of the back rooms leads to a storage basement where the alcohol is kept. the back rooms can be used by customers who wish for more privacy. frequent visitors to the bar will often tell the story of the ‘blonde with a bottle’, warning newcomers away from drawing their pistols, for fear of bringing on the wrath of abigail lloyd. upstairs rooms house the main staff of the bar, and a few extra rooms can be rented, should the owner of the bar decide to.

hampton court
hampton court is a beautiful royal palace which serves as her majesty's home should she choose to stay in london. the palace is very well protected and is almost bustling with activity from the many servants, guards, nobles and anyone else who would have business with the queen. there is an extremely large maze which covers a third of an acre in the back of the palace where people often get lost; some unfortunate souls are gone for days before showing up again.

navy headquarters
the main office of the royal navy is located in london and is perhaps one of the most lavish offices that you can find in the city. the building has several rooms, all used for different purposes, from mapping to negotiations. there are maps hung up in almost every room along with a globe. there are soldiers stationed in the lobby of the building which makes sneaking in a bit difficult, along with the lobby soldiers can sometimes be found in the offices of the more prominent faces of the company during the day.

roadways
the narrow streets of london have many dents and nicks in the stone due to many horse drawn carriages that carry the nobles around the town. soldiers patrol the streets to keep them orderly and somewhat clean. hardly anyone lingers just to talk since most of london's residents tend to be busy and need to get to their destination as quickly as possible. carriages for hire can be found lingering to the sides of the streets, the drivers willing to take a paying customer anywhere in the city...for a fee, of course.

the west end
the section of london called the ‘west end’ is where all the prominent shops and stores are. the best and most incredible items are made and sold here, often expensive and imported. spices, clothing, jewelry, anything you can imagine can be found in one of the shops lining this large section of london. the streets are kept cleaner, and the shops often employ their own guards to protect their merchandise. even the thief population is less here, deterred by the many soldiers that keep order.

thames shorelines
the river thames is the only way to get to london by water. fortunately, the river is navigable to even the largest of ships, making it an important part of trading for london. the shores of this river change depending on how close to the city they are. farther away from london, the shores are less inhabited, usually grassy and sandy, with the river rushing peacefully by. closer to the city, the shores have been turned into ports, often lined with large rocks, or gravel beaches.

port of london
the harbor is extremely well kept and supervised with soldiers because the majority of the royal navy's fleet happens to be docked here. it really is a sight to see. the security around these parts are especially tight, but if you're a merchant you can rest assured that your goods aren't stolen, at least not without much difficulty, but to dock here requires you to pay a shiny penny. you might think you've been robbed after how light your purse feels once you've paid all your royalties.

the greene knight
the greene knight is a rather prominent bar and inn located a short walk away from the port of london; the perfect distance for a newly arrived sailor to frequent, or for off-duty naval officers. the building itself is not overlarge, although it does have a stable wing and a second floor of rooms, should a customer not feel sober enough to go home. the bar itself is decorated in legends of king arthur – specifically that of the greene knight’s tale. a plaque outside the door bares the tell-tale painting of the knight in green armor. the tavern is well-known for being a clean, cheery place, often with musical entertainment. owned by the lloyd family, some regulars may even remember the daughter who used to work there, named abigail. a large hearth lines one side of the main room, filled with tables and chairs, the walls lined with paintings depicting arthurian legends. back rooms are available should the need for a private meeting arise – for a price, of course. the bar serves everything from rum and gin to wine and tea, always the finest to be bought.

rum-runner's isle
this small spit of land is pathetic. it can barely be called an island. consisting of flat, pale sandy beaches surrounding a once-palm-tree infested center, there is a section of the island that is far taller, made of green hills with bald caps. atop these hills, one can see for miles. once upon a time, this island was used as a cache for the rum-runners, until the east india trading company drove the smugglers away. now there is an empty basement in the center of the island...surrounded by the charred ashes of what used to be palm trees. small green sprouts are growing, but it was obvious that there was a big fire there at some point. often, sailors are marooned on this island.

isla cruces
at one point, isla cruces was a european colony, a thriving one. buildings and even a large stone church was built on the island. however, that was a very long time ago. the colony was struck by the plague, and those who did not die fled. believing that the island still held the plague within it, no one ever set foot on it. davy jones chose this island to bury his heart on, although it no longer resides there. now, this wild island is uninhabited, except by those few who dare to explore it. for some unexplainable reason, lying a little ways from the shore, in the water, is a wooden mill wheel...no one is quite sure how it got there.

isla de pelegosto
this particular island is renowned for its ‘long pork’. which, of course, is human flesh. white, sandy beaches and a deep green jungle make the island beautiful...while, deep within the mountains and vines live a tribe of cannibals. their chiefs change often, as they believe that their chiefs are gods in human forms, and must be ‘set free from their fleshy prisons’ so they eat them. very few people come here willingly; even fewer escape.

a slender river winds through dark, jungle-like swamp lands, leading through shadowy trees that wink with the light of fireflies at night, and move with the currents of crocodiles during the day. small villages live a ways away from the river, and often watchers can be seen looking out from within the bracken. deep within the island is a petite shack, lifted onto a hill with stilts, and a ladder leading to the front door.

asian countries are known for their exotic spices and animals and singapore is no different. the country itself is extremely small and can sometimes be considered one huge city. in these waters the pirates make the rules. the location is rather seedy and the people are questionable in his domain but then most of the residents are pirates. outside of his corner of business honest merchants line the streets with various stands. from daos to magical herbs, you're bound to find what you are looking for here.

for some reason a group of people thought it was smart to settle right at the base of a volcano and start a thriving town. from taverns to weapon shops to ports padres del fuego isn't lacking in anything, it even has a small naval fort in the upper east side of town. volcanic caves make for excellent places to hide stolen merchandise and offer adventure to the bored pirate. the flaw? the volcano isn't quite dormant and every now and then ash will rain down from the sky.
