Bitchy is one word to describe Gus. If you’re trying to be nice, you might just call her feisty. She’s not exactly mean spirited, but she doesn’t care what others think of her and that shows in what she does and the way she speaks. She likes to shock people and make them think that she has no boundaries. In fact, often times she can be quite sarcastic. The way she says these things are what allow her to get away with saying them. She’ll say them in a teasing, careless manner. She never really means them to be hurtful anyway, because it isn’t her goal to hurt anyone. Her humor tends to drift toward the sarcastic quips. She usually has a retort ready for anything. Some people seem to think this means she is a bitch, but usually she means it just in fun...mostly. However, she definitely has a reputation for being on the bitchy side, something she knows, but doesn’t really care about. Although she can come off as bitchy, Gus can be incredibly charming in a certain way. She loves to laugh and tease people, and so it isn’t unlikely for her to be joke around with people. Generally, though, she does get her jollies by doing something unexpected or surprising and watching how people react. It’s a specialty of hers and something she does well.

Many consider Gus a hyper girl and she might agree. Mostly she would say she just likes to be active. She cannot stand not doing something. Sitting in a seat for school was hard enough for her. She especially doesn't like to sit during her free time. She would much rather be exploring the city, working, dancing, or having sex. She likes to be doing things. Gus has seen how short life can be and she does not want to waste it sitting on her bottom, doing nothing but watching some fake people's lives on TV. She would rather be actually living life. As long as she is being active and having fun, Gus is pretty happy, no matter who she does it with. One might think that her career choice is questionable if she doesn’t like to be still, as being a private detective often involves sitting in her car for long periods of time, but that’s one of the few times she can handle it. With her work there is still that sort of intrigue, the desire to find the answer.

That’s why she hates simple cases. Luckily, she has enough of a choice of which cases she chooses. If they’re not interesting enough to her, she’ll pass them on to one of her colleagues. She’s gained enough respect in the few years she has been a private investigator that her boss, or handler, only sends cases her way that he think she would enjoy and that would put her skills to good use. If it’s slow, she’ll take the simple cases, but they are generally very easy for her that it doesn’t take her more than a day or two. It’s not that she’s particularly brilliant, but she knows what she needs and after watching the target for a short time, she can usually figure out how to get what she needs and get it quicker.

Considering the way Gus generally acts, most people think she is stupid, or at least, not smart. She doesn’t always use her brain when she talks, often allowing her hormones take over or even let her mouth do the talking. Because of this, she comes of as a dumb, promiscuous tramp rather than the semi-educated woman she really is. While not a genius, Gus did well in high school, where she did well, and she is actually a lot smarter than people her credit for, particularly outside of her job. She does not switch between Gus the professional and Gus the promiscuous, but she does change from sharing her insights to keeping them for her own insight. Gus is fairly confident, but most people would call her overconfident or arrogant. She doesn’t necessarily mean it when she says things that seem arrogant, but often it is just part of her general teasing manner.

Gus has two major skills- her only real skills as she sees them and she uses them to her advantage whenever possible. The first is her skill of observation. Gus has this uncanny ability to notice everything in the room- from where people are positioned to what color top each is wearing to the oatmeal spilled on a person’s trousers. She learned this long ago, when she was a child, always having to please each of her parents. With them she knew what they wanted, but as she went out into the rest of the world, she had to figure out what everyone else wanted from her. With her parents, it was just to please them, but as she strove for freedom, it became less how to please each person and more how to make them see what she wanted them to. It was how she managed to evade her parents’ for so long when she was doing drugs, and the like. It was never exactly a survival measure, but rather a measure to keep the balance, to keep both of her parents happy. Now, it allows her to get what she wants, using her second skill- manipulation.

Gus is very determined in her job and she’ll do just about anything to be successful in it. She’s not against some illegalities, including drugs and bribery, but she, of course, would prefer to do things legally, as to have less bad spots on her record and the less chance that she’ll get arrested or caught. If it’s easier, faster or necessary, she will use the illegal route though. Certainly breaking and entering, stalking and wire taps can be norms for her work. She can lie with ease. The more people lie, the more they lose the track of the lies. For Gus, this isn’t the case. She is very good at keeping track of what she’s told to whom. She loves a challenge in all aspects of her life. She doesn’t mind dealing with difficult clients, and rather enjoys them, because having difficult clients is more likely to display how good at her job she is and it also gives her something to strive for. She enjoys being in control, of both situations and people. One of the reasons Gus is so good at her job is that she’s fantastic at controlling these without people realizing. Gus is a fantastic, and sly, manipulator.

Despite what everyone thinks, Gus is not a slut. She doesn’t sleep, and she isn’t much for random flings. Instead, she enjoys sleeping with her friends, having sort of ‘friends with benefits’ relationships. Her loose reputation is exaggerated, but she doesn’t help much in that aspect. She’ll flirt with anything that walks, whether she had genuine interest or not. Their reaction amuses her. Many of them are shocked, particularly when she hits on women (it is so hard to find a pretty lesbian in this city). She supposes she could be considered a tease and she certainly does do that intentionally. She’s flirt with a guy, give him a little taste, and then just laugh off any sort of interest he shows, unless she’s genuinely interested. Despite how she once did anything to please the people around her, Gus has grown out of that and now most things she does is because she wants to do them.

Despite the way she indulges herself, Gus is trying to grow up and take more responsibilities. After high school she realized how much she had relied on her parents, while she had always wanted more freedoms. Of course, most children can’t get freedom from their parents. Despite her rebellion at an early age, Gus was entirely too dependent on her family for far too long of her life. She’s trying to change that now, though she’s struggling more than she thought she would. While she has the job she wants, the money she wants, and the all around life she wants, there are some things she longs for. Meaningful relationships for one. There are very few relationships in her life that are long term and those that are generally are only that way because of blood. It’s not that she doesn’t try, but she’s not entirely sure how to get into a meaningful relationship of any sort. She has friends, certainly, and romantic entanglements, but they’re not exactly what she wants. Truth is she doesn’t know how to keep these relationships afloat. Gus is desperately trying to stay clean, at least cocaine wise, but she puts herself in terrible situations with the people she spends time with and the places she goes to. More and more of her money is going up her nose and she realizes it. However, she’s not entirely sure if she has the will or the power to stop herself.

Honesty is pretty important to Gus, even if it means being a little on the blunt side. In fact, she prefers it. If that’s how something is, she’d rather just lay it out, then skit around the topic and feel embarrassed or shy. That’s just silly to her. Her shock tolerance is very high, so nothing shocks her. She has little idea where the line of propriety and professionalism should begin (and let’s face it, PIs aren’t exactly known for being the class of the world). Most people would call her ‘uncouth’ or ‘white trash’, particularly when she strolls into suit and tie law offices in one of her cute tiny dresses, although she isn’t dressed like the trashy hookers on the corner. Instead, she describes her dress as ‘sexy professional’, though one could describe it as ‘slutty professional’. Anyway, her exploits can be well known throughout law offices, particularly when it comes to getting work out of them. It’s not like she’s desperate for work, but she likes to get cases that are interesting, and so she finds out which lawyers have the most interesting cases and then tracking them down, finding out how to get what she wants out of them. Generally that’s very easy. When it comes to lawyers, they like to feel in power, they like to have their egos stroked, and so that’s what she’ll do.

She’s very level headed and not much can rattle her. Gus rarely gets angry, and even when she does she usually doesn’t show it. She does get annoyed or irritated, and these are the emotions she feels rather than anger most of the time. She will show it occasionally, but it still doesn’t come off as a true annoyance, but rather a small huffy irritation. She’ll smile in exasperation, sigh a little, and then go about her business. However, there are very few things that bother her. She dislikes it when people don’t listen to her or let her get away with things she normally would. If a person were to truly come after her, with a purpose, things might be a little different. Like any person, Gus can have a temper. And she really does not like to be messed with. Because she lives in New York City, she’s learned to protective herself by seeming tough and it has become part of her. Most people seem to see her as a very rough girl. She doesn’t necessarily need to be looked out for, as she is not the most vicious person, but it would not be a pleasant thing to have Gus mad at a person.

Being born to a hit man of the Sicilian mafia is a strange thing. For the first couple years of her life, she rarely saw her father, as her mother didn’t want him putting her in danger. It was a testament to how much he loved her that he obeyed, as women were placed at the lowest of low places in the mafia and yet he did as she wanted. Stefano did love his wife and so he obeyed her wish, seeing his child less than once a week for the first five years of her life. She still remembers how strange it was having him around more often, and how skittish she was around him, not used to having a father so present. However, he showed he loved her and fairly soon, she was in the middle of a happy little family, albeit with a weird, and dangerous life. Her mother kept her safe, doing as she figured she should and being a good little wife. She took Gus to play dates with other children of the mafia family and kept her entertained. As much as her mother tried to keep her away from that part of their lives, there were some things she couldn't avoid, which is how Gus became acquainted with the Cardamones. The two families were known to each other, friends even, and Gus came to know all of them well over the years. Her father quite liked the idea that his only daughter might marry a Cardamone, coming from the tradition where these things were planned and thought about early. Instead of a Cardamone, though, her father tried to engage her to another don's child, but the don rejected her because her father was only a hit man. It was good, though, as they were all see, since Gus wouldn't like being told what to do with her life.

Her childhood was spent running around with other children from the mafia, as the mafia was certainly a family and community in it's own way. When she was about seven, she had her first kiss when Alfio Cardamone kissed her on the lips, intending to send her crying to her mother, as seemed to be quite a past time for him. Imagine his surprise when she grabbed him and kissed him back, shocking the young boy, but also issuing a challenge of some sort. The Cardamone that Gus spent the most time with though was Cosima, the only girl child that was around her age of the Cardamones. They were different even then, Gus more of a tomboy, but they got along quite well and Gus would certainly call her her childhood best friend, though she was hardly hurting for friends. The Cardamones moved to America when Gus was about eight and it was somewhat of a blow to her, since it was much more difficult to see them after that, but she was a friendly child and didn't have a problem finding other children to entertain or to be entertained by.

Gus was more than little spoiled, despite the fact that her family was middle class. Her parents doted on her, as an only child, even though she never asked for much and never wanted for much either. They were strict, though, in some ways. School came first rather than other things. Of course, Gus rebelled quite a bit, even on the dangerous side of things. She got involved in drugs when she was fifteen, cocaine in particular. She was certainly addicted but it was something she managed to hide, at least from her family, probably because she was a hyper teen as it was. She spent a lot more time with her friends, a rough crowd she ran around with. It was from this group that Gus' first relationship and first sexual experiment would come. Her first relationship was when she was fifteen with a girl named Nora, Gus' first and only steady relationship with a girl. It started when the two girls were high at a party, ending up in a naked mess of limbs. From then on they were inseparable. It was like so many youthful relationships, awkward and uncomfortable in some ways, but exhilarating and consuming in others. People envied them and boys lusted after them but the two girls cared deeply for each other. Gus even introduced Nora as her girlfriend to her parents, which shocked and disappointed them. Both were old fashioned and tried to convince themselves that it was only a phase; they had hoped for grandchildren and they didn't approve of Nora, the kind of person she was, in the first place. They were mobsters, but they had heard all the wild things Nora did- drugs, drinking, sex parties and they didn't want their daughter getting involved in that sort of thing. It was all true, but they didn't realize Gus was involved in these things before Nora. It was these things that had brought the two girls together, though Nora had been part of the mob since birth, as Gus had. It was an unhealthy relationship in that the two encouraged the addictions they had to cocaine, but they both learned from it. Gus learned that she batted for both teams and Nora learned she only wanted women. It broke up after a year and a half but the two girl remained close friends, best friends, in fact. Nora was even there when Gus met her next romantic partner.

Outside of her friends, though, Gus still spent a lot of time with her family, both blood and from the mob. Gus fit well into the mafia life, though, enjoying the large family she always had around her. It was thanks to the mafia family that she got so involved in cars, starting with she was in her preteens. She would spend a lot of time at one of the garages owned by an Italian mobster after school, and she ended up learning from a very talented mechanic. It was really where her sexuality came out as well, since she was constantly objectified by the mob men and other customers who came in and out. She played into it at times, got used to teasing men that they couldn't touch her, but they could look all they want. It led her to some interesting ideas, especially about using her sexuality, not sex, to get what she wanted. Often she'd do it just for fun, to see how far they would go, and she was amazed by how well it worked. She worked for this mechanic until she moved to the States, becoming quite the accomplished mechanic. That didn’t mean she didn’t wander outside the family, particularly when it came to her love life. She was seventeen when she met Fyodor Moltinova. If her parents hadn't approved of Nora, there was no way in hell they would tolerate her having a relationship with Fyodor because wasn't Italian. He was Russian, a Russian mobster even. Gus didn't care much about his loyalties though. She was enthralled and enraptured by him, and she gave him her body as well as her heart. It was very exciting since she often had to sneak out to meet him. He was dangerous and forbidden and it thrilled her.

In the academic arena, there really isn't much to talk about. Gus was much too interested in other areas of life to put much focus on her schoolwork. She didn't take in much, but managed to get through her schooling with mostly Cs, except when she took mechanic classes, which she excelled in. A lot of people give much credit to her connections to mobsters as the reason why she actually managed to get through school without being held back, and Gus wouldn't put it past her family to put a little pressure on teachers to pass her, but she honestly doesn't give a damn. She can hardly think of any skills she learned in school that would be helpful to her in real life, and so she didn't even try. It wasn't as if she had plans for college.

Her father finally found out about the relationship with Fyodor, and the drugs which he blamed on Fyodor, when she seventeen and just about to graduate, and he told her to break it off. She refused. She hated being told what she could and couldn’t do. It wasn't something she was used to, as she got what she wanted a lot and found ways to get it when it wasn't handed to her. Gus supposes she was somewhat spoiled and so being told ‘no’ wasn’t something she could take. After threatening whatever he could, he finally decided the only other option was to separate them, and he knew just exactly how to do this. Stefano made arrangements for her to live with a cousin in Boston, MA, where he knew she would be taken care of, but still be punished. Gus fought it, hard, but having a Mafia hit man for a father made it hard to do much. He threatened to kill Fyodor and so Gus finally agreed, sending a final, tearful goodbye letter to him, before she got on the plane for Boston.

At first, she hated America. She hated being away from a person she cared about, but her personality wasn’t tailored to hang onto that. She rekindled a friendship with Zeno Cardamone, which became more than friendship soon after she arrived. It was an unhealthy relationship in a way, both so consumed with each other that they hung onto the relationship and the other for dear life. She was able to get off drugs at Zeno's insistence; it helped that she had him to be addicted to. Gus got clean a few months after their relationship started. It lasted for about two years before they began to pull apart from each other. Gus had begun to realize how much she depended on other people, on men. She began to fit into the new life she had been given, but she also realized that she didn’t want to rely on her family anymore. Gus loved having this huge organization around her, to protect her and love her, but she didn’t want them to take care of her anymore. She had always thought of herself as an independent woman, but she realized she wasn’t, so she decided to change that. She set up shop as a private investigator, using what few skills she had to gain a good reputation, both inside her family and outside of it, though she has to tread carefully on who she accepts as clients, being careful not to fall into the same situation as she had before. Although, really, the problem that landed her here didn’t change her that much. She still will sleep with who she wants and talk to who she wants, she's very open about befriending other mobs.

Her father told her she could return, that her punishment was over two years ago. By that time Gus had solidified a reputation, she had made friends and she had grown to enjoy being away from her parents, though not her family. Gus wasn’t going to let her parents dictate her life and so she refused. Her parents were surprised, and a little hurt, but Gus immediately knew it was the right thing to do.

In January of 2009, Gus was involved in an incident at her PI office, in which someone ended up putting a bomb there as a warning to her. Alfio Cardamone was there at the time and was badly injured. Luckily, Gus managed to get him to the hospital, but she was scared for the next few days that he was unconscious. It made her realize she was in love with him and when he woke up he told her the same thing. They started dating and though it's had a lot of rough patches, Gus is surely in love with him. In August of 2009 she found out she was pregnant with his child.
