Lorelei loved the feel of the warm sand in her toes. It had been heated gently by the morning sun, which had soon, like every other day, decided it would hide behind the clouds come noon. The waves lapped the edge of the beach, enticing Lei into the water. She slipped off her sandals and bent over to pick them up. And there she walked for ages, her feet swashing through the cool waters. It was refreshing, to a certain extent, until the coolness turned into an icy bite. Retreating to the large rocks back the strand, Lei sighed. It really was a beautiful place once you got used to it.
Despite the dullness beginning to form in the sky, it was still warm - maybe about seventeen or eighteen degrees celcius. Lei picked a large rock to sit on, and it seemed to have been baked under the early sun too, because it was warm when she sat on it. Deciding she needed a drink, she pulled out her bottle of water and took a sip. As she did that she stared out onto the coast, a glazed look over her eyes. The water glistened in the strange light, and a shadow moved across the calm ocean alot further out. It looked like a cargo ship, but Lei could have been mistaken. It could have been a cruise liner too. Who cared anyway? It was an early Saturday morning and the first free time she'd had to herself in ages. Time to relax - she took a towel out of her bag and folded it into a cushion shape. She then set it behind her on the rock and lay back. Breathing deeply, she closed her eyes.
Focus on the sounds Lei. The wind, the water lapping the sand. The seagulls.. wait - seagulls? There weren't any seagulls a second ago.. Her eyes flicked open to the source of the sound. Seagulls - hundreds of them, all came soaring to the waters ahead of her, plucking fish from beneath the surface. Lei watched in fascination as the birds flew vertically downwards like torpedos, before scooping up fish in their beaks and flying towards their nests in the cliffs. She watched as some clawed at the fish with their talons - right on the sand ahead of her. Obviously they were too hungry to wait to wait to reach the cliffs. She giggled silently. Even if she had giggled loudly it wouldn't be heard - there were way too many seagulls making way too much noise. A loner in the flock waddled beside the waves, hopping up every time a wave threw forward. This made Lei smile.
Clearly he doesn't want his feet wet. Lazy bugger. Rolling her eyes, she remembered she had a bread roll in her bag.
She knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that if she threw a crumb in front of her, all the seagulls - whether with fish or without - that the selfish blighters would bomb themselves right at it. Lei had always seen seagulls as being like the vulture of the coasts. Taking her chances, she began unwrapping the clingfilm around the roll. She noticed afew seagulls stop what they were doing and looking around.
I wonder if they can sense things like that, like dogs.. or if they're smart enough to know that's the sound of food.. The loner seagull from previously - the one who didn't want his feet wet - began precariously hopping his way forward, towards the large rock Lei was sitting on. Rolling her eyes, she stated - "Not today greedy pants. If you want food, you got to get your feet wet like the rest of them." And with that, she set the roll on the rock and banged her two hands together.
The seagulls departed in a flurry of wings and squaking. Lei presumed they wouldn't be back any time soon. "Nice knowing you!" She laughed, shaking her head before taking a bite out of her roll. She heard scuffling in the sand behind her. "Pesky birds.." She muttered, before turning around in preparation to clap her hands to scare them away again. She stopped in her tracks.
"Oh, hello." She remarked, seeing a person standing before her. "I wasn't expecting anyone out this time of the day."
