    Name: Cadence Rosaleen Kennedy

    Age: 16

    Date of Birth: 3 January

    Origin: Cork, Ireland

Current Location: The Streets / The Docks

    Occupation: Unemployed

Relationship Status: Single, with bigger things to worry about

    Class: Street

Reason: Cadence is a runaway who escaped two years of physical abuse from her father.

    Appearance:
Though Cadence is sixteen, she could easily pass as thirteen or fourteen. She only stands at 5'3" and weighs a meager 105 pounds. She's not precisely anorexic looking, but a little more time on the streets will certainly bring about that tragically unhealthy appearance. Even before she was homeless, Cadence was small for her age; as a result she has the chest size and boyish figure of a preteen girl.

Her hair is, under normal circumstances, an enviably gorgeous, burnished auburn. It flows down in loose curls to the middle of her back and is almost always parted in the center. She used to occasionally straighten it before school or big events. Now, without a brush or good bath to help her, that beautiful hair is greasy and knotted, almost always tucked up under her black newsboy cap.

Cadence has a remarkably pale, creamy complexion, gifted with her mother's excellent, blemish-free genetics. Of course, with her malnourishment, that complexion has gone sickly and pallid. Her almond eyes, framed by thin, light lashes, are a dark and stormy blue that look a dark grey in the right lighting. Her eyebrows are the same light brown color as her hair, and they border on being perfectly horizontal. Now, without grooming, they're gradually growing thicker. Cadence's nose is relatively flat and gently curves out and up, and her pale lips are very thin. Her face is both heart-shaped and full, waiting for age to let her grow into a very fine bone structure. She has relatively small ears that are double pierced, though she currently wears no earrings.

Before living on the streets, Cadence was almost always decked out in black, red, and vibrant pink punk-ish clothing. She loved decking out her arms in rows of beaded bracelets and wearing relatively random hats. She was often wearing bright leggings or torn jeans and her favorite black converse high-tops. Her tops always had intricate graphic designs or witty remarks. And if anyone tried to get her in a dress, she'd be tempted to aim a fist toward their face. Now, she'd be happy to get any new clothing, even a dress. (Well, no, maybe not even a dress.) Since she left her dad, she's been wearing a grey-and-red stripped long-sleeved shirt and dark, torn jeans. Luckily, with the unpredictable Rathe weather, she also has a military-style, black wool coat with many zippers and silver fastenings. She's still wearing her same black converse high tops, though the canvas isn't exactly convenient when the weather's wet. Along with these items of clothing, her only other possessions are her black electric guitar (guarded in a battered case) and her mother's silver, star-shaped locket hung on a long chain and hidden under her shirt.

    Personality:
Cadence is a stubborn, resilient young woman who pushes against any barrier – society, people, and her own shadows – to get what she wants. To those who don't understand her past or heart, she comes off as extremely abrasive, unrelenting, and completely without a conscience. Her words are always sarcastic or angry. But, that is when she speaks at all. Unless she's confronted or singing along to the notes of her guitar, her thin lips are tightly sealed. She is also almost completely unwilling to let anyone help get her out of her current situation.

But beneath this harsh, cold exterior – a necessary shield – is a passionate, ambitious girl who has a longing for life and love. Sure, she's self-centered and moody at times, but all Cadence really wants is to find a beautiful place where she belongs. And then, if only she could find the icing on the cake that would be people who legitimately care for her. This is often expressed in the music she plays along the street corners or around the docks of Eastern Rathe for money.

After all, how could she not be longing for something more? Sure, she at least has her freedom. But how free can she be when she is living day to day, hoping to survive to see the sun rise again? She misses being able to walk along the city streets and enjoy the beauty of the outdoors. She misses planting dandelions, daisies, and tulips in the communal garden behind her father's flat complex. She misses playing football and watching music videos on the television and painting on cardboard her father unceremoniously threw in the bin. She misses sleeping on her own bed, in her own room, and eating more than one meal a day. Hell, she even misses going to her classes.

As tough as she acts, this desire for something more leaves her very vulnerable. If someone were to get close to her, she would attach to them and not give a second thought to whatever consequences came from the actions of both parties. She doesn't trust easily, but it has always been difficult for her to be angry at someone who she has given her rare gift of trust and friendship. But Cadence is, at the back of her mind, aware of this shortcoming. She's not a stupid girl, especially when it comes to her own nature. That's why she has kept away from people since leaving her father. Actually, she's kept away from people since her mother died, in order to keep from loving someone and having her heart broken again.

    Character History:
Cadence was born at the best hospital of Cork, Ireland sixteen years ago. Her parents had been happily married for two years, and, while they were hardly upper class citizens, they had managed to buy a decent-sized flat for themselves and their new baby girl. Olivia and Ryan had met in their last year of university four years prior to Cadence's birth, and the connection had been (as Cadence would mockingly say) almost sickeningly instant. She was an art major who had no idea what to do with her life, and he was studying journalism simply because nothing else seemed right. They both loved football, hated classical music, often attended political protests, and wanted one child.

So Cadence grew up in a normal, lower-middle class home where she was relatively happy. Her mother became an art teacher at the high school two blocks from their flat, and Ryan Kennedy started at the bottom of The Cork Review placing classifieds. Eventually, he moved very rapidly up the ladder to become a sports correspondent for several papers. Cadence went to school and learned all the normal things: arithmetic, English, the sciences, and magic. English was always her favorite subject. She couldn't add two to two without a calculator nor remember dates for history classes. And her abilities in the magical arts were more than a joke. But, she understood English, the art of verbal expression. And her father was very proud.

Throughout her childhood, Cadence also fostered a great love of music. She started with that ever popular, infernal instrument of the recorder and worked up to piano, flute, and finally guitar in school classes. Once she began maturing, it also became evident that she had a great ear for music and a naturally gifted singing voice. Soon, Cadence and her group of friends were starting small bands that broke up every two weeks. But, it was all fun. And it was evident Cadence had a true gift.

Then, everything began to change two months before Cadence's thirteenth birthday. She began having hallucinations. At first, the symptoms of her schizophrenia were relatively innocent. She would hear music, as if it were coming from a stereo right next to her, that wasn't there. And soon she was seeing doors shutting, birds flying (frighteningly, once, a bird flying into a window), and children running across the street when there was really nothing to be seen. She quickly realized what was going on, and Cadence did her absolute best to hide the growing disorder. This made her more distant, especially from her best friends and family. But, no one had the slightest idea of what was going on.

And then, three months later, when Cadence had officially entered the teen years, her family received the worst news she had ever heard: her mother was dying. Olivia had ignored the headaches so long that the doctors were sure there was nothing to be done for the brain tumor, but they tried chemo and experimental treatments anyway. They told her six weeks. Nothing worked. Not even a little. And after spending her last three month's with her mother, Cadence attended her first funeral.

Olivia's death was the catalyst that sent Cadence's schizophrenia into a worse state. Soon enough she was seeing the same three, imaginary people and even more vivid random hallucinations. One would radically change her life. Walking home from school, she saw a man hit a kid with his car and simply keep speeding down the street. She still doesn't quote know why, but she jumped in front of the car herself. This time the driver stopped, and Cadence proceeded to yell and cry about what had just happened. The driver had absolutely no idea what was going on, even though Cadence could quite clearly see the blood on the hood and the eight-year-old, towheaded boy lying in the middle of the road. It was only when she was sitting in a jail cell, for punching the man in the face, that Cadence realized what had happened.

She was sent to Lakewood Park, a therapeutic camp for teenagers will all sorts of issues from drug addiction to severe ADD. She knew from the moment she arrived that the place wasn't going to do a damn thing for any of the kids there. And she was basically right. She spent her summer there but never got anything more than a few bottles of medication.

Afterward, Cadence moved into her father's new, smaller flat in Rathe. Suffering from severe depression, he had lost his job while Cadence was away. A friend working at The Rathe Times got him a job as a fact checker for the sports section. It was something. So, Cadence attended her last year of middle school in Rathe, away from all of her friends and never making new ones. Being at that camp had changed her; she didn't want to be around people anymore. She didn't want them to have to deal with what she was going through.

And she thought her life had hit rock bottom, but it could only get worse. The summer before she started at Palefort High School, her father began drinking heavily. And then he began coming home from work in the odd hours of the morning absolutely pissed. And he began cussing Cadence out every night. And then he began hitting her. And she began hiding the bruises. And the booze.

And Ryan lost his job at the paper. They lived off of his temp jobs for a while, and Cadence at least had a roof over her head to be thankful for. But, shortly after Cadence turned sixteen, her father tried to forcibly take away her guitar (one of the two possessions she still had, after selling everything else) to pawn it. She refused. He hit her. And she left, never looking back. Cadence has been living on the streets ever since, abandoning school so that he couldn't find her. Now, she realizes she should have left long ago, but Cadence wishes she could at least get a job besides playing on street corners. But who wants to hire a runaway who looks like she crawled out of the storm drain? Especially one with an arrest record and a mental disorder?

    Family:
Olivia Abigail Edwards Kennedy: mother [deceased at age 40]
    Ryan Connor Kennedy: father [42]

    Pets: None

Other: Just her past history, personality flaws, or homelessness would all be issues on their own which could be qualified and tragic and difficult to deal with. But Cadence has one more demon beating her spirit down: her schizophrenia. Now, after enduring two years of abuse and being without her drugs, the shadows have grown to their darkest and most oppressing point. That's what she calls them, her hallucinations. They are her shadows. Occasionally she will see random movements or apparitions, but, as of late, she has seen three separate people with their personalities and voices: Charlotte (a six year old girl who enjoys taunting Cadence about her position), Adam (a boy her age who tries to comfort but easily loses his temper), and Gregory (a sarcastic man in his mid-twenties who seems completely apathetic toward Cadence's situation).

Luckily, Cadence has none of the paranoia often associated with schizophrenia, but she does try desperately to hide her disease from anyone else around her. That is part of the reason why she has been so distant from people in recent years. It's also why, in addition, of course, to everything else, she's felt so hopeless. The schizophrenia is only getting worse, and she now worries that her life will never be able to recover.
