These are just some general questions that we expect to come up (or already have). If your question isn't answered here, feel free to make a thread in the Help Desk forum.

I'm a bit overwhelmed with all this information- how do I get started?
Head over to the Quick Links in the sidebar and read through the rules; once you've gotten through those, you can fill out your character application and post it in the New Faces forum. Once your application has been accepted, you're free to create a relationship page for your character, talk in the out-of-character forums, and of course start role-playing!
How long will it take for my application to be approved? What do I do if I'm asked to make changes?
Generally an application will be approved within 24 hours; sometimes life does get in the way, so please be patient.

If your application requires changes, you'll be told specifically what needs to be tweaked; once you've made the appropriate changes, just reply in your thread that you're ready for another look.
I can't think of anyone to use for my character face! Help!
You may leave your character face portion open and simply describe them the way they appear in your head for the appearance portion; once your character has been accepted, you can ask for other member help in selecting a character face. If you do not select a character face when you first submit your application, you MUST send a Governor a PM about your face claim choice before adding it to your application or using it on the site.
I'm confused about the plot- I can't find any information on it. What's going on here?
The staff at AVA decided that a little mystery is a good thing; nowhere on the site will you find a complete, detailed breakdown of the main plot. The theme of the plot, though, is glory, eternity and immortality, and you can be assured that these things are the goals for many on the site.

Part of motivation for keeping the main plot somewhat secretive is that no character can feel left out of the main plot, because it can be happening with any character in any thread. Also, we feel it encourages members to develop interesting personal plots for their characters, which enrich the world of AVA.
How long is a year in game?
A year in game is 10 weeks (70 days) in real time. For some I'm sure that seems like an exceedingly long time; for others, it seems abysmally short. The year can be broken up in two ways- by a Hogwarts student's year, or seasonally. The beginnings of each season, as well as the beginnings of each portion of the student year, will be posted in the calendar for easy member use.

Seasonally, winter and summer are 17 days long, whereas spring and autumn are 18 days. For the student, summer break is 14 days, first term is 24 days, winter break is 8 days, and second term is 24 days.
I have a great idea for the site- who do I tell?
Tell us all about it in the Suggestion Box; the staff is always looking for new ideas, and will take yours into consideration.
What is a relationship thread? Does my character need one? What are plot pages?
Relationship threads (also known as plot pages) are a very artistic and unique way for characters to interact and develop relationships; it's also very handy for people with multiple characters to keep an eye on who is friends (and enemies) with whom. They aren't necessary, but they can be a lot of fun.
I'm having some creative problems with my character- what should I do?
Ask for help! The best place to get ideas and feedback is the Etcetera forum.
I love plotting, and would like to join the Plot Team for the site's main plot. What do I do?
Send a pm to Governor Cleary. Not everyone who applies to join the Plot Team will be accepted, though; there are some qualifications that will be discussed privately.
I'd like to be part of the staff. What do I do?
    You don't.

Seriously- if we are in need of staff, we'll keep our eyes open, and any member who seems to fit our requirements will be contacted. You don't come to us- we come to you.
Why can I post in some places but not in others?
While all members (excluding banned members) can read any portion of the board where others will be role-playing, posting is restricted based on your character's user group. For instance, 1st Year Hogwarts students cannot go to Hogsmeade in the books; therefore at AVA, they cannot post at Hogsmeade. Likewise, adults, excepting Hogwarts staff, cannot post in Hogwarts Castle or on the Grounds.
