Personal Description: Threnody is definitely not one of the Weapons that look like they belong in the Weapon X program, and just one glance at the young woman is enough to tell anyone that. Her frame is small and slight, an innocent-looking package that hides a surprising amount of strength. Long brown hair reaches the small of her back and is normally worn free or pulled back into a loose ponytail. Rich chocolate eyes stare out unwaveringly at the world, sometimes shrewdly focused on what’s before them, but usually just gazing off into space. Threnody’s body is composed of long, lean muscles, begun by the dancing she enjoyed in her childhood and molded by the training regiment of the Weapon X program. She has an unhurried grace about her that is readily apparent in battle.
Threnody looks older than she really is, and her eyes, especially, seem to be those of an old soul. The tortures of the Weapon X program have done little to leave their mark on her body, given her ready acquiescence to the sordid tasks set before her, and so Threnody does not bear nearly as many scars and visual reminders of her time spent in captivity as some. The most noticeable marks that she does possess are the many repeated needle tracks on her skin from the frequent drug injections that she endures on a daily basis (see Control section). She is allowed outside often, partly for good behavior and partly to safely release the dangerous energy she is always absorbing, and therefore her cocoa-colored skin retains its warm glow, not having the chance to grow ashen within the dank confines of the Weapon X compound. Threnody can be counted on to smile just as easily as frown, and she usually wears an expression of mild amusement at the world that surrounds her.
Mutant Powers:
Present: Threnody is a sort of energy vampire. She senses and absorbs the pain and necroplasmic energies that surround a person when they are injured or dying. She also absorbs any remaining life energy a body contains, and then releases, upon its death. This energy builds up until it is released in an extreme concussive blast. The presence of pain and death and the absorption of these energies are very pleasurable to Threnody, and she has become addicted to them. She is also a psychic medium, of sorts, due to her sensitivity towards death, and can hear the voices of the dead that have yet to move on. These voices can often be a good source of information, but they can just as easily lead the death mutant astray, too.
In addition to being able to absorb the energy surrounding pain and death, Threnody is also capable of absorbing kinetic and psionic energies. For instance, she can absorb the kinetic energy off of a bullet heading towards her so that it would merely fall to the ground before impact. Her psionic absorption is a powerful natural defense that keeps telepaths and the like from mentally controlling her or penetrating her mind. Not that any should want to venture into the convoluted mess that is her mind at the moment. Much like with the death energy, this is a natural and uncontrolled process on Threnody’s part. However, these energies do not build up within her to create concussive blasts, and their absorption is, instead, a protective and natural extension of Threnody’s powers.
Future: At some point, Threnody will be able to literally raise the dead and create zombies. Instead of releasing the necroplasmic energies she absorbs, she can channel them in order to reanimate a corpse or corpses. These zombies would mostly be created in order to serve as a distraction or be used as canon fodder or meat shields. They do not “die” unless their heads are separated from their bodies. Any other injuries are easily recovered from, and this “healing” does not require any extra energy on Threnody’s part.
Control: While Threnody is fitted with a neural inhibitor that exerts control over her powers, unlike a large portion of the other Weapons, she is allowed to walk around with those powers active the majority of the time. Letting the woman keep a steady stream of necroplasmic energy within her system keeps her mostly docile and content, much like a heroin addict with a steady stream of smack running through their veins. And just like any other addict, the one thing that Threnody fears the most is the loss of that which she craves. That’s how the Weapon X program keeps the mutant in control. One wrong move and Threnody loses her powers and, with them, the near-constant euphoria she feels around all of the death and pain that permeate the Weapon X facility. Such a punishment is truly horrifying for the woman, and she would do practically anything to avoid it.
A secondary control measure programmed into her neural inhibitor keeps Threnody from destroying her surroundings with an ill-timed release of built-up necroplasmic energies. When her supply of “death energy” reaches explosive capacity, the woman is either taken from the facility to release the concussive blast harmlessly (or not so harmlessly, depending on if her captors have her on a mission that day), or she is brought into one of the many labs so that her abilities can be further studied, either passively or by letting her vent her energy upon some other, usually unsuspecting, Weapon. Once her store of energy is full, and until it is then released, Threnody is a walking bundle of euphoria, riding high on the seductive power coursing through her body. While this makes her a happy little prisoner, it can also make her unpredictable as she will seek some way, any way, to release the pent-up energy if she is forced to keep it within her for too long.
One final control has to do with the side effects that Threnody’s abilities inflict upon her. Being able to hear the very voices of the dead, while handy at times, tends to make a person rather unstable. Therefore, the woman is injected with a constant stream of drugs that are designed to keep her insanity at a happy medium. If the dosage is too low and she slips too far into insanity, Threnody becomes an unproductive Weapon, easily distracted by the first shiny thing to cross her path. Too high of a dosage, and her captors risk the woman’s shattered thoughts becoming too clear and her broken mind piecing together exactly what it is that they have caused her to become, possibly leading to one very pissed off mutant.
Limitations: Threnody, despite enjoying her work in the Weapon X program oh so much, still lacks a lot of the strength that many of her fellow Weapons seem to possess. Her body is just not the sort that readily bulks up, and, in a head to head battle on strength alone, the young woman would quickly and easily be subdued. While her weapons training and powers make her a much stronger opponent than she would normally be otherwise, the woman is usually sent out on missions along with a physically stronger Weapon.
Truth be told, Threnody is more than a little crazy. She was that way before she even came to the compound, and Weapon X doing everything in their power to feed her addiction certainly hasn’t helped matters lately. If her level of medication isn’t constantly maintained, her behavior can take a dangerous turn. Whether that ends up being a turn of violence or just one of simple, wandering distraction is anyone’s guess. More often than not, though, it’s the latter. It’s always easy to tell when Threnody’s drugs are wearing off because the childlike naďveté that is a trademark sign of her insanity often becomes much more noticeable.
Her own powers, in a sense, are a limitation, too. Or rather, her addiction to them is. That addiction has grown so strong, that Threnody will do almost anything to get it, if the Weapon X program doesn’t feed her a constant stream of the pain and the death that she craves. If that means killing more than just her intended target or standing idly by while a fellow Weapon fights a losing battle so that she can absorb their pain, then so be it.
Personality: Threnody can often be found wandering the complex, lost in her own little world. When her medication is at the right levels, she’s almost normal, though still slightly off. Like a picture that’s slightly off-center, it’s only noticeable if one actually spends any real length of time around the woman. However, given that the guards never remember to supply the mutant with her drugs until she starts acting up, Threnody’s medication is often not at the right levels. In which case, she usually comes across as more than a little crazy. Some might blame it on the time that she’s spent in the Weapon X compound, but she was crazy before she had ever stepped foot into that complex.
It was her powers that drove Threnody crazy, not anything that the Weapon X program did to her. Hey, you would be crazy, too, if you always had the dead chattering away in your ears. But it was really the strain of being unable to control her powers, and the sick sense of pleasure she got in using them, that truly drove Threnody crazy. She tried to fight it at first, but now she embraces her mutation, reveling in the power and heady rush of pleasure that it often gives her. Whatever morals she might have possessed before her powers manifested have disappeared, only to be replaced by an all-consuming desire to do whatever it takes for her to get her next "fix". Some part of Threnody, deep, deep down, realizes what a horrible person that makes her; that part, fortunately, is kept nearly silent beneath the many voices, both real and imagined, that the crazy girl hears within her head.
When she's not pursuing her next necroplasmic energy high, it's difficult to pinpoint exactly how Threnody will act. Her shattered mind is hard to follow. One moment she’s full of childish innocence, and the next she’s provocatively seductive. She can be cold and manipulative, although, more often than not, she is the one being manipulated and taken advantage of. Her moods shift as easily as the wind changes, and it can be dangerous to catch her when you think she’s in one mood, only to find out that she’s in another.
Fighting Style: Threnody has a very fluid fighting style that incorporates the agility and grace she gained in her youth studying dance. Although she had very little fighting ability before she joined the Weapon X program, Threnody is now proficient in the use of a number of weapons, including a variety of firearms and blades. However, she prefers to fight with any manner of sword over a gun because of the ability to deal a slower, more painful death, which in turn fuels her powers more. Place a blade in her hand, and, if in the right mood, Threnody can weave a dance of death that is as haunting to watch as it is lethal. On more covert missions, the female Weapon prefers any type of slow acting poison, for the same slow, painful death reasons.
History: If you were to ask Threnody about her childhood, or the name Melody Jacobs, all you would receive is a blank look. The name might occasionally stir up some faint memories of movement and music, but Threnody doesn’t remember much more than that about the formative years of her life. The first clear memory she does recall is that of her powers manifesting for the very first time after a car wreck that claimed her parents' lives.
The moments leading up to that time are blurry, or blocked from her mind, but they consist of screaming metal, smoke, and cries of pain. What Threnody remembers clearly is coming to tossed outside of a burning car, with a broken arm, a couple of cracked ribs, and a ton of gashes and bruises. She could smell the odor of burning flesh and hear the screams of her parents trapped in the wreckage of the crashed car. But, despite that, and her numerous injuries, Threnody felt…
wonderful. And as the screaming died down into silence amidst the crackling of the flames, a sudden rush of euphoria ran through the girl’s body, completely blanketing whatever pain and grief she should have been experiencing at the time.
Her next clear memory is that of being found wandering along a dusty road, bruised, battered, and her arm at a weird angle. She was still completely oblivious to the pain, running high off of the strange energy now coursing through her body. When a local police officer pulled over to check on the lost girl, he found her glowing with an odd power that seemed to shimmer in the very air around her. The sudden rush of energy absorbed from the pain and deaths of her parents was too much for the inexperienced mutant, and it overwhelmed her body, exploding out in a concussive blast that literally obliterated the police officer that had stopped to check on her. For the briefest of moments, Threnody felt a sense of horror at what she had done, what she was doing, but it quickly disappeared in the heady rush of death energy that coursed back into her body as the charred remains of the police officer's corpse crumbled to the ground.
Threnody's memories become jumbled again after this point. She must have made it to a hospital eventually, for her arm and ribs were patched up for her. When exactly that happened, she doesn't recall, but she does remember all of the delicious energy that blanketed the hospital's rooms and corridors. Eventually, much like the police officer, that building became nothing more than a burnt-out shell when the young mutant's powers overwhelmed her yet again. It was then that the voices began to talk to her, and Threnody finally became scared of this strange power she seemed to possess. She tried to stop herself from taking any more lives, from feeding on any more pain, but the necroplasmic energies would call to her, and the voices would often lead her, unknowingly, in their direction. It was the start of a slippery slope for Threnody, and eventually she was a full-blown addict to her own powers and more than a little insane to boot.
With her pesky conscience no longer holding her back, Threnody began to seek out the death energy she craved so much, literally following trails of the stuff back to its source or letting the voices in her head point her in the right direction. At some point, around the age of 15, the female mutant wandered across a particularly tantalizing trail of death that lingered in the air. She followed it, undeterred by any obstacles that were in her path, much like a bloodhound tracking the scent it had been looking for all along. The trail lead her back to the Weapon X compound, where the girl walked in of her own free will. Once the minds behind the program realized what she was capable of, she became a Weapon in her own right, and Threnody has never even thought about leaving the complex since then.
Sample Role Play: It was that time of day again. She could feel them coming, the hair on the back of her neck standing up as the wind whispered warnings around her. They were coming to take the voices away, to dull them down into soft murmurs, until they were little more than a steady flow of white noise within her ears. She didn’t want them to; she liked being able to hear the voices. They were her friends and constant companions. They let her know what was going on in the world, and it was far too difficult to hear them after the guards had gotten ahold of her every day.
She was crouched by the fence surrounding the Weapon X compound, fingers entwined within the chainlink material. She wasn’t planning an escape, like many of the other Weapons would be doing in such a position. She was simply watching, her eyes following the fluttering movements of a brightly colored butterfly a short distance away. A nearby guard glanced over at her occasionally, but he, too, was used to the mutant known only as Threnody and her erratic ways. She was content with her position as part of the Weapon X program, and she never tried to escape the compound. It would be rather pointless, considering that she had walked in there of her own free will those few short years ago.
As the other guards approached behind her, the dark-skinned beauty tensed, her muscles shifting imperceptibly, waiting for just the right moment. They were talking amongst themselves, not as alert as they probably should have been around the female Weapon. But, why did they need to be on alert? It wasn’t like she ever gave them any trouble. And, the few times that she did, all they really had to do was distract her with something shiny for a few moments while somebody injected her with her daily dose of drugs to keep her slightly less-insane than normal. No muss, no fuss. So, it’s not like the guards were anticipating anything different today.
Unfortunately for them, Threnody was. Still crouched beside of the fence, she waited until the footsteps sounded more closely behind her. When they were within range, she acted, pushing off of the fence, right leg sweeping out behind her in a move that knocked the three guards off of their feet. She jumped to her feet, completely forgetting the lone guard that had been keeping watch over her before, only remembering him as she felt the weight of him tackling her to the ground. “No!” she screamed, struggling against the man with a strength that was surprising for such a small frame. “Don’t take them away! I want to hear them… don’t make them be quiet again!”
“Damn lunatic…” one of the other guards muttered as he pulled himself to his feet. The other two grabbed the girl as she managed to slip free from the first guard, trying to make another break for it. A sharp blow to the head silenced the stream of insanity issuing incessantly from Threnody’s mouth, but she still continued to struggle, even as the cold needle slipped into her vein. The heady rush of the drug, part whatever it was they used to keep her from slipping too far into insanity and part calming euphoria, danced through her body, and slowly the woman’s flailing limbs ceased to struggle.
After a moment’s hesitation, the guards released her, wary this time for another unexpected attack, but the brunette simply slumped to the ground, mumbling incoherently in the dust and dirt. “No… don’t leave me again… so quiet. Why are they so quiet?” It wouldn’t take long before she would be the same calm, slightly off mutant that normally wandered the corridors of the Weapon X compound. Usually there wasn’t such a fuss when it came time for her daily injection, but today had been the exception that made the rule. The guards had grown lax in their duty around the insane woman, and they had not been prepared for this unexpected fighting back. But they would remember this come tomorrow, and they would be more than ready to strike her down much more harshly, had she the nerve to fight back again.
Other:
Character Plans: I thought it would be fun to have a Weapon who was perfectly content to be a Weapon. Not constantly planning some sort of escape and not following the orders of others because she has to, but because she wants to. I also think it'll be fun to see which of the other Weapons warm up to the woman because of her ability to leech the pain off of them, despite her willingness to, and enjoyment in, killing innocent people.
At some point, I would like to trigger Threnody’s ability to resurrect herself. I figure that, if some big break-out is planned in the future, she can come back after being killed on a mission and be pissed off at the Weapon X program for using her and getting her killed, hence leading up to her wanting to leave the facility finally. If there’s no big group break-out planned, then I figure she can just come back, raise a zombie army, and wreck havoc on the facility for the hell of it!
