Anyone doing his/her Staffords through Sallie Mae? I'm having a ridiculous time trying to get this over with. Today the financial aid dep't suffer a flood at 'Nova, and I will not be able to talk with them until Monday. Am I at risk to not receive my loans if I don't sign soon?

I did mine. Aside from a couple of hiccups that they contacted me over the phone about, I did everything online, including the signing of the notes. I did my Stafford and my Grad PLUS loans through them, I think.

I did Sallie Mae and it was pretty easy. The only problem was the fact that I had to have a damn cosigner for my private loans but that wasn't a huge deal. Now when do we get our checks??? I want to see what it will look like to have 50K in my bank account.

Kevdog, how did your package come out? Did you get any award money?

Package came out as the 18,500 in stafford, 3,000 in a villanova law loan, and 26,580 in PLUS loans annually.

At least I got the 3,000 in Perkins direct from villanova, but it would have been nice to have some aid. i'm not now, nor have i ever been from a rich family, but whatever, it's paid for so it's cool at this point.

The only think pissing me off is that on the salliemae/opennet website, my stafford loans are listed as waiting for first disbursement and my PLUS loan is not yet set up with disbursement dates. Sallie Mae says it is waiting on Villanova, so I'm waiting a week or so before contacting them to let them know my shit is not finalized with them yet. It makes me paranoid.

what loans did you get? did you get a loan for your living expenses? that's what the PLUS is covering for me...that and the remainder of tuition.

Actually I think I did, nevermind. It's listed in my letter as Gradplus/private loan.

On your letter on novasis is it still listed as EST or as CERT?

EST, but I have gone through Sallie Mae and filled everything out. I needed a cosigner though which was a bit surprising

Usually on the private loans they want not only a good credit rating, but also an employment history of a full-time job in the past couple of years. If you don't have both then they want a cosigner.

OK so we're both at the same point. My Villanova loan says ACPT, my stafford loans both say CERT, and my PLUS still says EST. I think Nova just needs to inform Sallie Mae of the disbursement dates now.

How the hell do they want me to pay my remaining balance when I haven't gotten any checks yet?

I actually spoke to someone in financial aid today about that very same question. Basically, the woman said that most people are in the exact same boat and that once the disbersment date passes you can pay your balance any time before the first day of classes... so just for right now you can "ignore" the due date of August 8.
