...Kyedash was one of only a few people who Evan could stand… who he cared about, purely against his will of course.

July 7, 2009 We've rebooted the game, all new chars, all new plots, all new mayhem! Join up!

September - October 1570 AF: The first two weeks of September are sunny, in the middle 60s F (15-21 C) with light breezes and stronger winds in the evenings. During the second week frost begins to show in the mornings, burned off by the first sunrise. The last two weeks see overcast days with occasional sun, and frequent rains that often bloom into full blown storms. The temp drops to around 60 F (15.5 C) and stays there. Sunny mornings are foggy. Everyone knows whose roof leaks by the end of the month. Roads are muddy and rather horrible.

Weather doesn't improve into the first two weeks of October - in fact, it gets worse, and the temperature drops even further, averaging at about 45 F (7 C). It is rainy for the first week, and though the rain stops for the second week it is still overcast. After that, the weather clears up but it is still not particularly warm. Towards the end of October, there begins to be frost and fog in the mornings.

Hi there, my name is Shiara. I was rereading a Valdemar book and had this sudden desire to find a Valdemar rp place and join. I went to google and after bouncing around for a little bit found this site and thought I'd give joining up a whirl.
I've rped before, although not in this fandom. I have a character bouncing around in my head, but I'm not as familiar with the setting of Valdemar as I could be, (other than the book I just read it's been several years) so I could use some assistance/swatting on the hand and being told that that is utterly impossible in the context.

So I have Adele Eveton in my head. According to her she's short, brown haired and brown eyed, 13/14 years old and an ungifted Healer with a very strong affinity for herbs. So she can grow stuff and help mix medicines and the like, but can't heal magically.
I'm toying with the idea of having her be a cloth merchant's daughter from one of the larger towns in Valdemar, although I'm trying to recall how likely it would be for someone to end up being a healer if they didn't have the gift for it, and whether it's possible at all without some sort of reason for being at the Collegium in the first place.

Hello! Welcome to Sun and Shadow! I'm Ker, one of the admin. Yeah, two admin for three players. Oh well. It would help to know which Valdemar book you read, so we can try to fill in the blanks. I think amongst the three of us we've read it all.

The problem with an unGifted Healer is that she'd just be a healer with a small 'h' and referred to either as a physicker or a herb woman or some other more common term that implied a practitioner of healing without the Gift. That, and she'd never see the Collegiums. While not every village/town/wide spot in the road has a Healer (far from it), they'd likely have a non-Gifted medical person who mixes draughts or teas and sets bones and the like. So the likelihood of Adele coming to Healers' Collegium wihtout the Healing Gift is sadly 0.

However. Like Heralds, many Healers have minimal or less than spectacular Healing Gifts. It's the big showy ones that get the attention, which is why Lackey never wrote a book about a Herald who could only just MindSpeak his/her Companion. Adele could have just a touch, enough to detect colds or internal injuries, but not enough to really be helpful past that. Like anyone Gifted, she'd need to come to the Collegiums for a year or two to get her Gift under her control, and maybe then her gift-with-a-small-g for herbs and herbology could flourish, and she could stay on as a talented herbologist. Would that work?

Take a Thief. I've read others but, as I said, it's been a while.

And super weak touch gift it is!
So she'd probably get recognized by a local healer and then sent to the Collegium?

A ha. Yeah, that book was one of Lackey's better ones, but unfortunately didn't enlighten much about the other Collegiums. Vanyel's first book actually did a fairly good job of hashing out the Collegiums and the needs of each one.

Not a local Healer. A person without a Healing Gift can't sense it in someone with one, unless that person is suddenly raising the dead or reattaching limbs and in that case they wouldn't be allowed here because whoa, power. But a Healer passing through, or going on rounds of the countryside or whatever, would sense it if Adele used it in his/her presence. Tingled with it when she was near someone with a cold or internal bleeding or something, they'd pick it up. She can be really lucky and have a powerful Healer come through and 'oh goodness' sense it. Plot devices are only useful if we take advantage of them! And then she's in and her story unfurls and blah blah blah, into the game. Woo! Horribly exciting.

Sounds like I should hie me down to the library. Where I will doubtless be disappointed because they only have the second or third books in half the series if experience is anything to go by. Ah well.

And got it!

Yeah, I hate that. I'm reading series with 10 or 11 books and most of the time the earliest book the library has is number 5...
