Hello!
I was thinking that we could do some sort of activity for Girl's Day on March 3rd. It won't be so much about celebrating girls, it's just that I think the idea of a "Girl's Day" is interesting in itself to people who aren't in the Japanese Club. We could sell the colored mochi or give some out to passerby peoples. Or maybe have someone dress in a Kimono and wear a big "Happy Girls Day" sign and run around on that day to promote it. I just think that people would find it interesting. But I'm not sure if there's a local confectionary place here to make the mochi or if people would be really interested. Or if there is a health issue with CSUN about food. What do you think? |

HMM.. i've never seen a place selling colored mochi, or any type of sweet mochi, though i've never really looked
it would be awesome if there is a place like that somewhere though its a cool idea, but does anyone have kimono? ..does anyone have time to run around in kimono? hehe |

The scattered Japan marts may have some confectionary items. The one on Maryland Parkway seems to have the pink, white and green mochi ball sticks so we may be able to ask them if they have a local supplier. I agree though that if we don't have a supplier than this project is may have drawbacks. As for the Kimono thing, I have one that I could ask my mom to mail over (though I have no idea how to put it on). The walking around in it could be done in shifts, although the person may only have to just stand by the booth next to the sellers to look pretty. The best way for it to work is if there is a mini-commitee set up for the event to work out things like: supplies, cost, time, area, selling or donation, schedule and shift changes, people who'd like to participate, etc. Also, March 3rd falls on a Saturday so there may not be that many people on campus anyway. I guess I'll have to appeal to the event coordinators. Do they check the boards? |

oooo you've thought it out already - well done
it sounds like a great idea, but it might be hard to do this semester so don't set your hopes too high. I'd totally be willing to stand around in kimono and hand out mochi (but i'd need a different kimono, because the one i have is a summer kimono and its a bit cold for that) uhm i think only one (Mr. Pres.) checks the boards, oh and miss Ellen (secretary) checks boards ocassionally too, but you can also e-mail any of the board members http://clubs.unlv.edu/japanese/boardmembers.html oh! also, i saw mochi at a japanese store the other day, it was assorted bean filled mochi (i love the green kind ) but i forgot to check the price.. they are around though, so we can probably work something out.if it's cool out, we could even do a makeshift tea ceremony (get a few girls in kimono handing out bowls of tea) but that would take A LOT of planning |

That's a really great idea. I will run this idea with the rest of the board members and with our assistant event coordinator (Satoka) to see what we can do with this activity. We will have another board meeting this Friday so I can let them know about the rest of your ideas.
Unfortunately, that is true. |

Thanks for everyone who responded!
Yeah, if there aren't enough resources or time and stuff, then I won't be too down if it doesn't go through. There are already a ton of awesome events coming up so the board is understandably very busy. I'm actually just grateful that it's even being considered and for the people who took the time to think about it and consider all aspects of the idea |

Good news!!
This event has been approved by the rest of the board members during our meeting! Due to the fact that Girls Day falls on a Saturday, we might have to move it to a differerent day (Monday or Thursday). Stay tuned for more details! |

!!! Man, I don't check the forums for a while and the next thing I find is a Girl's Day plan! pfffft, shows me not to do silly stuff like homework instead.
I would totally help on a thursday, if that's the day we plan... though I don't have a kimono - I'm not exactly a petite-framed woman, and I dunno if you can get em in a size "amazonianly tall". Does anyone else think it'd be really funny to get some our guy members to dress in drag for this? I mean, this just screams shojou anime plot. ~is shot for suggesting it~... If I can't get a kimono, can I run around tossing pink petal-shapped confetti into the wind? It totally counts as helping. |

I'd do it if it was on a thursday and after its not so cold anymore. IE, above 75. I get confused for a girl a lot anyway.

Hehe yeah, you should do it as well. We have most of the ladies ready to help out as well. We might have to do it in shifts though to accomodate with everybody's schedule. |

how tall are you amanda? my kimono would probably fit 5'10" before looking short, maybe a lil taller... i think kimono's are made to be sort of one size fits all, adjustable lengths and such.. it just wouldn't be folded exactly in the traditional way.. but who would know
