I think there was a topic like this before but it went somewhere. Also, timing means that loads of people are gonna be NaNoing, but I'd forget otherwise.
So yeah, recommend your favourite books and say stuff about them! 8D |

I dunno. D= It's been a while since I read a book that made me go YEAH THIS IS AWESOME.
I managed to read about half of Canterbury Tales before I had to return it. It's pretty entertaining. The fact that the entire thing rhymes amazes me. |

Okay, so, I love The Thirteen Clocks by James Thurber. It's a nice little fantasy book, with a subtle creepiness and a nice poetic feel to it.
And American Gods is a wonderful book. Hell, anything by Neil Gaiman ranks very high in my list. American Gods is great, especially if you like mythology. |

The Night Angel trilogy by Brent Weeks
It's fantasy for starters, I think that crossbows are the most technological weapons but i could have missed something. The setting is a country called Cenaria which is incredibly corrupt and run by a group of people called the Sa'kage (dispite already having a king). They run every illegal activity you can name and anyone who tries to stop them dies, that simple. To do this they use special assasins called "Wetboys" who never fail because of magical abilities that have been honed for stealth, speed and power. While most mages use "mental" magic Wetboys use mostly physical. The Sa'kage are perhaps the only reason why Cenaria remains free as it is surrounded by expansionist countries who are deterred by the intense filth. The main character is an orphan called Azoth who becomes an apprentice to the best Wetboy Durzo Blint and all that entails. All the books are roughly 700 pages |

Anything by Terry Pratchett, because the man is a [radio edit]ing genius.
.. Oh, right, details. He writes satirical fantasy. Each book is full of parodies and generally has a single subject that it focuses on. For example, I just finished rereading his second book, The Light Fantastic, which primarily satirizes Conan the Barbarian. |

Sir Apropos of Nothing is a cheeky fantasy, but is also filled with quite a number of "Well that sucks"-moments.
Godspeaker Trilogy. Fantasy, Mature, BRUTAL series, I loved it and want/need someone else in the ToK to read it. But I can see it easily turning people off since the first book, Empress, is SOOOOOOOO brutal, and its opening chapter sets the tone. It lost some awesome in 2 and 3, but it also switched main characters >_> |

Bah, I want to read that trilogy, but I can't find it on the interwebs and they certainly don't have it in any libraries here.

Blade Runner and The Lovely Bones. Both amazing books. I'll expand on 'em later.

Sounds like a magic item in DnD that prevents you from being disarmed. |

I agree with Blade Runner, 1984, and especially Catch-22. Have to read the other ones.
To add to the list of Joseph Heller books, I'd say, read God Knows. Pretty funny. |

Islandia, by Austin Tappen-Wright.
It's out of print though, so good luck finding it. It's one of the best, 1,000 page adventure/romance/somewhat fantasy novels out there. He had to cut it down by 3,000 pages because the editor wouldn't let him publish it as it was, but it's still a classic. It's about a continent out in the Indian Ocean, and the nation of Islandia facing Antarctica on it. So it's in an alternate history of Earth, because everything else is the same, except this continent is just opening up to the rest of the world, so it's the story of the American Consulate to Islandia. |

@ Sunny: I actually heard Godspeaker's protagonist was kinda lame and two-dimensional after a certain plot event, but I may have to check that out myself. If that's the book I"m thinking of, at any rate.
Anyway, I recommend Guy Gavriel Kay's "Fionavar Tapestry," "The Lions of al-Rassan," and "Tigana" as some of the best damn fantasy I've ever read, and definitely candidates for best novels, period. |

Haven't read anything in at least over a year (*prepares to be flamed*), but I'll back up Shadow's recommendation of 1984 for a mind [radio edit], and toss in Frankenstein just because it was the only book I read in class senior year that I liked.

I'll second Shadow's recommendation of The Kite Runner.
If anyone is interested in a fresh look at Christian philosophy, Velvet Elvis by Rob Bell is a good read. |
