So does anyone else like The Chronicles of Narnia? Or am I just the weird Christian girl of the board? tongue.gif

I've never read them. I tried to read them once, but I couldn't stand the style of writing.
But since you mentioned the Christian thing, I was wondering - I've heard that there are a ton of Christian refrences in the books and I was wondering how that could be, and what they are, especially as the books are about magical places, while Christianity sees witchcraft as devil-work.

Wow, obviously I can't really be an expert on this, but I'll tell you what I think.

The first obvious reference, is that Aslan is the Jesus figure in Narnia, and Jadus (The White Witch) is the devil. She temps Edmund to bring his siblings to her with sweets, and the promise of being her prince. She took over Narnia over a hundred years before the story, and the four kids help defeat her and help Aslan regain control. The most prominent reference is Aslan dying for Edmund's sin, falling into temptation, and returning to life. Sound familiar? All the books have biblical references, especially The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe and The Last Battle. In it, Aslan reveals the TRUE Narnia, and it's Heaven.

It's not really about magical placeS, it's one place. Jadus uses witchcraft...but did you ever hear how God can make anything happen? He does, after all, have a lot of power. In Prince Caspian, a lot of the animals no longer talk. "Get treated as a dumb animal long enough, you become one." Just the fact that God controls everything - except our own free will, and the Devil - explains a lot of the magic in it. The rest is Jadus's witchcraft, which is dark magic, but Aslan uses only white magic. The creatures aren't magical themselves...they are mythological creatures with no extraordinary powers. And some animals talk, but I think Aslan enabled them to do that, but if they started being treated like dumb animals, they just gave up. It's mainly the land that's magical, and that's because Aslan can controls it. Trees that are alive, talking animals, you name it. I think God's the only one that's supposed to be able to do things unimaginable, that's why witchcraft is viewed as bad, because it's not Him doing it.

I tried to explain it...hope it answer your questions.

Oh, wow, ok, I see now. Yes, it was definitely a helpful explanation! And how weird, the thing about the animals not being able to talk once treated like dumb animals? Sounds exactly like what goes on with the animals in Wicked...

Isn't Wicked much newer, though? Narnia was published in the 50's... So I doubt he copied. xP

Oh, I'm relieved that was helpful. It took me ages to think of the answer...then type it out, haha.

Oh, of course, I didn't mean he copied, I meant that if anything the guy who wrote the book Wicked copied from Narnia, and it annoyed me cause I thought it was all original =/.

Haha, aw, thanks for putting in the effort though, I've really been wondering about it for a long time! smile.gif

Dude I LOVE The Narnia books and movies. I'm so sad they won't make any more movies :[ I'm not Christian, and don't know much about the story of Jesus or whatever so I never knew there was a Christian theme or anything until my mom told me about it. Which is silly. I love Aslan! he's a badass. 10x cooler than Jesus, I mean shit, he's a lion.

No offense to people who like Jesus. JUST my opinion :]
