When I was looking on JKR's website (looking for something about the switching houses thing. Haven't found anything yet by the way) I came across this rumour and JKR's response...

QUOTE
The Order of the Phoenix communicates using chocolate frog cards.

This is such a great idea that I was in two minds whether to shoot it down; however, a chocolate frog card, or any object that would have to be remembered and carried on the person, would always be vulnerable to loss, destruction or trickery. The Order communicates in a way that requires nothing but a wand. You saw the Order’s method of communication in use even before you knew about the existence of the Order; it was employed by an Order member.

I have put in bold the bit that I am most interested about.

Have any theories about what the method is or when they communicated before?

Sorry if this has been discussed before.

Me too! I'm going to be looking mainly at the beggining of OotP and the end of GoF because that's when we know about the order but don't know about it... if you know what I mean. I'm probably looking in totally the wrong places though, knowing me! :P

I thought it could have been in GOF when Dumbledore alerted Hagrid with that silvery thing from his wand?
I dont know, I think I voted for this question on JKs new poll, though I cant really remember

I've thought of that - to me it seems a bit slow, covers too short a distance and is visible to everybody... I think it's a more subtle way but you'll never know. Anyway I'm rereading the books just finished PoA and I'll be reading the rest of the books with this in mind especially looking closely whenever Dumbledore, Snape, Hagrid, Mr and Mrs Weasley, Lupus etc are communication across distances.
By the way I don't think Fawkes is the answer either he's simply sending a warning

Mmm, I can see the sense in Fawkes but they don't use a wand for that.

I will check out the page you said BTV... it seems to make sense.

If they are using a wand then that way seems the most logical. I can see where WOD is coming from, I would have thought that it would be invisible too.

They communicate using their patronuses, JKR said so in an interview (and Dumbledore's patronus is a phoenix, hence order of the phoenix)
