JUNE ACTIVITY CHECK |

Activity Check!
DURING activity checks from now on, I will email everyone as a friendly Packs reminder! If you don't want to be emailed just tell me during this check and I will make sure not to bother you... although, it is only one email every once in a while and without it you might forget what great fun is yet to be had. Can't hurt is what I figure but please inform me here or via a PM so that I don't get on your nerves. As for this activity check! No problem, right? Just post your username and wolves you plan on playing. That is all. No big deal. You can also post a reason for your absence if you stumble online after my email so that we know why you are away and when to be expecting you back! It is just routine!
ADMINISTRATORS that don't respond to this will get their administrative rights removed: it is the most basic admin responsibly to be active.
MEMBERS with ALPHAS who don't respond and don't have previous note for absence (aka didn't tell us they were leaving for a bit) will have their alpha's played by someone else till they prove they are ready.
Please, I do not want to bother anyone, but we all agreed to post. Just tell me how I can help in any way! |

Why is it in the About The Packs forum? Probably because it is important, and goes at the top of the site - you don't respond, you get deleted. Save for Amaro (as we have had advanced notice about your situation. ) So, post here saying you still post, and the characters you still consider active. If you think a character is lulling, you can mention that, too, and we'll help you out. For example, I'd say: I'm active: Currently Nightshade, Saberain, and -temporarily- Siviana are too. Please delete everything about Lil except her character application - I'll bring her back later for comic relief, just not in Tundra (which is basically dead).Okay? You have until Sunday, April 12, to post; a little less than two weeks. Then I get to clean up. Yippee! |

Making Characters |
| Posted by Golden Moon - 03-6-09 04:45 - 0 comments |

The admins have initiated a couple of rules about making characters. I know that some people are capable of having seven or more characters, with still keeping them active an all, but its a seriously rare skill and eventually you're bound to loose track. We've also set these boundaries to keep the wolf population down and strong.
Note: If you wolf dies for whatever reason, be old age, fighting, or sickness, you are free to make another. But don't have your wolf come back from the dead if you've already made a replacement for him.
First wolf: A freebie. You can make your first wolf when you first sign up.
Second wolf: Technically another freebie, but its advised that you post with your first wolf for a little while before making another. Admins have all rights to decline your second wolf if we don't think you made enough progress with your first.
Third wolf: This option is available after you have reached your 125th post. Normally we'd only say 100th, but most of the time member's post ranks increase by chatting in the Lounge or other things. So we have to add all those out-of-character posts into count.
Fourth wolf: Only available after the 750th post, and you have to ask for explicit permission from the admins to make another. Note: if the permission isn't asked directly at the site creator, the lower admins will send your request to Lunireal before granting you permission. But otherwise feel free to ask any of us. (Check at the top table of the site to see all the currently active staff!)
Fifth wolf +: Any higher is quite unadvisable, and only available if you are a long-term dependable member. You should also probably have a reason to make another wolf - such as one of your wolf's pack is running a little slow, or if you really have a good plot in mind.
Puppies: The mothers of puppies are permitted to roleplay the pups until they are weaned, but then they must be claimed by someone or sent to the Puppy Claiming area in the Waiting For a Pack section. The parents themselves are allowed to roleplay them, but within reason - for example, if you already have three wolves and have been in the site for a mere one-two months, it is unlikely you will be permitted to keep one of the pups.
Of course, none of these rules are completely set in stone. You can always fit your needs to a plot, as long as the admins consider it reasonable. Have fun! |

Ranks, Dominance, and Fighting |

Dominance
In The Packs, just like in real life, the wolves have a firm system of ranks and dominance. Basically, the strongest, cleverest, most powerful, or most well supported/liked gets to be at the top of the list. Who gets to be the boss is determined in many ways:
*From puppyhood, the most common way. Almost all of the wolves decide as a young pup who is the strongest and best in their playfights. *By rank (you can read about the ranks below). Ranks are obtained sometimes through heirarchy (father to son), other times by how wise or respected you are as a leader, and many times by displaying aggression to show you are the strongest *Amount of wolves that support you. If you are a lone wolf and challenge the alpha of a huge pack, odds are by far agaist you. Though it is possible to challenge the alpha alone without having to fight the rest of the pack, if the alpha refuses to fight alone you might have to face many wolves at once. *Full-on fights. Sometimes these fights can be a simple nip to show you are better. But if the other wolf doesn't submit to you, you can engage them in a fight until they do. If they win the battle then they are more dominant, and more respected; if they die in battle, they die with the greatest of honor; if they submit they can still relatively retain a bit of honor; if they run away they are considered the lowliest of wolves.
There are also many ways to show dominance. You do these things around the wolves that are considered lower than you in the 'picking order'; Walking around with tail raised high, lightly nipping those who are under you every once in a while, growling, standing tall, eating first.
There are a multitude of ways to show submissiveness, as well. All wolves can show submission at times, even the alphas if there is another alpha stronger than them. If you don't wish to show submission than you might have to fight the wolf who is trying to be more dominant than you. Two wolves who fight for dominance rarely ever have another big fight over it again - just a little reminder scuffle or two, as with every wolf. You can show submission to those higher than you by: groveling close to the ground, ears laid back, tail down, not making eye contact, not growling, gently licking, or whimpering if the case gets drastic.
Note: not every waking moment is a fight for dominance, though the common actions of a higher and lower wolf do take place daily. Frequently, once the order of dominance is set up at puppy birth, it can stay that way for seasons at a time and the wolves are content with it. But when some wolves feel they deserve more, which they do at times, then you can roleplay anything from the above paragraphs.
Ranks
Here, the ranks in a wolf pack are as follows (does not apply to the wolves of Loner's Mountain):
Alpha: Male and female, both lead the pack and are the most dominant, with good leadership skills, and most experience. If the pups of the alphas are worthy, then the strongest of them becomes the next alpha. (Sometimes a pack doesn't need to be run by hierarchy) An alpha can only breed with an alpha. If a new wolf wins the post of male alpha, he can claim the other female for himself, or if she refuses she will either be chased out or no longer considered an alpha.
Beta: Male and female, assist the alphas in keeping the pack in order. If the pups of the alphas aren't worthy than the betas take over positions of alpha. Can breed with anyone except the alphas. (If there is only 1 Beta, of course. The other Beta would be his mate.) The position of beta must be earned. All alpha rules apply as far as claiming the female goes.
Healer: One of the most respected wolves, who deals with herbs and the like. Generally peaceful but is trained in fighting.
Hunter: One of the normal members of the pack who help hunt for the others. Typically lithe and blessed with a sharp nose.
Camp Guard: One of the normal members of the pack who help gaurd the camp from invaders, as well as patrol the territory daily. Are frequently large, but not always, and skilled in the ways of fighting.
Other Wolves: Not all wolves are particularly skilled in hunting or fighting. They might just be extremely clever, or lazy, or just don't want to get their paws dirty. A wolf who isn't extremely good at either hunting or fighting, but more moderately skilled in both, is also considered this.
Mother Wolf: A female Guard or Hunter who goes out of duty for a little while to give birth, then returns to her post.
Yearling: A young wolf just out of puppyhood, but not yet an adult. It still has the "-pup" at the end of its name until it has completed training. Training begins at this age - the pup is trained in the ways of both a Camp Guard and Hunter by the whole pack (namely the Betas). After it has completed its first course of training, the Alpha decides which job the pup shall have - then it trains under all of the Hunters OR Gaurds (depending on what the Alph says) until it becomes a full grown wolf and looses the "-pup" at the end of its name.
Pup: A puppy. All pups have "-pup" at the end of their name. EX: Scuro-pup, Saberain-pup, Lil-pup.
Omega: The weakest of the wolves, frequently picked on. However, even the Omega is part of the pack, and is greatly mourned if it dies. The Omega is still loyal even if it is at the bottom of the dominance chain. Sometimes it is even called the greatest of positions because of the amount of didication and perserverence involved.
Fighting
There would be many reasons to fight in The Packs. War, or simply dominance fights. But the rules are all the same.
To fight, each player roleplays a certain action, WITHOUT saying the outcome. EX:
Saberian lunged for Darkwish's paw, intending to make him loose his balance.
Then the other player is allowed to dodge, or take on the attack. (Within the WHOLE fight, each player only gets up to 3 dodges!) EX:
Darkwish flipped as Saberain's weight came crashing down on his back leg.
OR
Darkwish managed to evade Saberian's attack, having seen the sable wolf lunge for his paw just in time.
After a little bit of roleplaying, one of the admins will decide who the winner is. (You must PM the admin beforehand saying that you intend to battle). Now, the looser either:
Submits - backing out, ears pinned back, tail down, showing the other wolf won (can be done gracefully, depending on the battle!) Runs away - self explanatory Dies - also, self explanatory. If you are declared the winner, you MUST ask for permission before killing the other wolf.
If you are fighting with a certain plot in mind, and you have already planned with the opponent who the winner is going to be, PM the admin who is judging and she will say the results according to what you requested. |

Breeding |

Breeding
Mating season for the wolves is Cold Ice (winter), in which case the pups are born in New Bloom (spring). Every once in a while they mate in Hot Sun (summer), when the pups are therefore born in the Gold Leaf (fall). Though Gold Leaf birthing cuts the chances of pup survival drastically, all that do survive also turn out stronger than other puppies - they had toughened in the harsh Cold Ice early on in life.
You can read the Dominance section for more information about who mates with who (for example, in a pack the other ranked wolves can not mate with the alpha without risking serious punishments by the alpha's mate). It is not needed to be graphic. Simply say that it took place, and PM one of the admins with what your general idea for the pups is. Address these points:
*How many pups you expect to be in the litter (from the start, not all live) *What their parents look like (just fur, eyes, and body build, no markings) *What you expect the pups to look like *Which of the pups will be male, which female *Anything else (do you want it to be blind, ect?)
Once the admin is messaged, they will do the good, old fashioned card-out-of-hat trick to decide how many pups live and which is male and female. It is the whim of the admin to decide the rest. Let's hope the said player is feeling nice so you don't end up with a cross-eyed pup!
Also, after the pups are bred and a however many die, you must figure who roleplays them in your Pack Talks or the Puppy Claiming area.
You can give birth to your pups 1 season after the mating occurs. (Note: The Packs time runs differently and inconsistantly in comparison to real time. Simply wait until the season in the game changes before you give birth to the pups.) By that time you will have all the information for your pups given to you by an admin (you do have some say in it, like for a plot, just ask) and you will post all the information in the same topic as the pup's birth. |

History of The Packs |
| Posted by Golden Moon - 02-15-09 22:41 - 0 comments |
 |
Long, long ago, the forces of evolution created the creatures now known as wolves. Many of them lived here, on this huge, multi-landscaped continent known as the Great Land. They roamed the seven climates, from the icy peak of Loner Mountain to the blazing heat of the Desert, in loose, unorganized packs or pairs. They frequently fought each other and among themselves, fighting for mates, territory, food, and sometimes just because the bloodlust was upon them.
But a nearly half were soon touched by great dreams. The visions were full of dominance and power, yes, but also of serenity and the honor of fighting for your family and pack. Inhabiting these dreams were mighty celestial wolves, who called themselves the Lunessa pack and walked fearlessly in the stars. They spoke of a time in the future, when the hundreds of loners and paired wolves would merge into seven powerful packs, to each his own climate to live in and protect.
The wolves who had already adapted to many of the climates decided to stay and settle down, mark territories, and fend for each other instead of just themselves. With the encouragement of the wolves who had dreamt of Lunessa came great powers of heirarchy within the packs. Dominance orders were established, and soon all seven individual packs became evident - Tundra, Plains, Forest, Sky Lake, River, Desert, and Swamp. Soon after their first Seven Corners meeting was held, a strange, fast-growing oak sapling began to sprout on top of a great cliff. Soon to be called the Great Oak, the dreamers were told that it was this tree that would hold the connection between the wolves and Lunessa, for those who could overcome the obstacles to reach it. Soon afterwards the wolves had no more dreams from their celestial ancestors. The wolves were alone to fend for themselves, undertaking life with the honor and valor of any true Pack wolf.
Yes, there were wars. As there were danger and evil and natural disasters, where even the very earth seems to split from under the wolves' paws. Yet if the birds still flew and the wolves still ran, the time of serenity lasted for ages more.
Until now. As the new seven Packs arise from the ashes of the old, with them comes more adventure and danger to the Great Land. Fangs will flash in the moonlight once more.
For a new legacy has begun. |

The Current Plot |
| Posted by Golden Moon - 02-15-09 20:58 - 0 comments |
 |
Wolves are beginning to trickle into the land from all directions, bringing with them a sense of power, might, and whispers of change to the seven regions. Already the howls of claim have rent the night in two - grand Alphas are now in control of the vast Plains, prowl in the depths of the shaded Forest, behold their beautiful Sky Lake with pride, and conquer the heat and sand of the Desert realm.
All was at peace, at first, during the first Seven Corners meeting. Alphas of the Forest, River, Swamp, Plains, and Sky Lake came, some with only themselves to offer, some with one or two new Pack recruits to swell the ranks of wolves in the meadow.
Until, from the shadows, bulky rogue wolves began to attack the Packs. Luckily the fighting abruptly ceased before anyone could get hurt; however, an further menace quickly revealed itself. The lead she-wolf Siviana and her mate emerged from the trees to propose to the Packs: either they join the rogues in slavery, giving up their land, or be killed.
And they have until the next full moon to decide. |

You might have noticed that loverly table at the top of the page. It looks really messy right now, being all half-done, blocky, and without header backgrounds and whatnot, but I'm getting there! Note: this was really, really hard to make. Might have taken me around 2 hours, but it's worth it! First time making a site table.
I'm going to add the season, open positions, Seven Corners dates, and game credits in there. (People always seem to miss the credits at the top of the site! ) Do you think I should add the plots, or would that take up too much space? I could make a plot topic and then link it there, I suppose.
Anyway, I'm also going to start advertising! Everybody help me, or face the consequences of my bazooka. And, everybody give hits to our site here by clicking the link in the table up there! |

Everyone, I just discovered an amazing and beautiful website with a free downloadable game about wolves. In multi-player you can join with others to make a pack, so I figured it'd be perfect for us to roleplay in. There is a chatbox, too, for RP, but this time we can see our wolves roam around!
So if you can please visit here;
www.wolfquest.org
And download the free game, it would be a great improvement for us all! |

How EXACTLY are we going to "remodle' the packs? And how should we decide which wolves to keep or not when some people are still coming back from the dead? |

This skin is to show how much I love the game. It has many benefits, and a lot of things can be changed if you want it to. Benefits of this skin:
It looks a lot cleaner, and motivates members to rebuild The Packs It has pretty graphics The site looks less cluttered with resized forum markers The Admin Section has a pretty picture outlined in gold! Yay, gold!
The only thing I'm not sure about is the width of the forum in general. If you guys think I should widen it, to make it look less proboard-ish, I can do that!
Oh. And the only problem I could find was here: http://z9.invisionfree.com/The_Packs/index...709&st=15last I have NO idea what was going on with that.
Lunireal, you like? I suppose I can always undo. |

Ok, this is serious. The Packs used to be, like, the next Neopets, and now it's empty!!! WHAT HAPPENED?! We need to bring the old crew back! Where are all the administrators? ALL OF THE SENIOR MEMBERS WHO I USED TO IDOLIZE HAVE LEFT THE PACKS!!! Last I checked, only Saylor seemed to care that this was a dying site. Well, at least one person cared. I was so busy I forgot to check up on here, and when I get back, YOU'RE GONE! We need to get the packs active again!!! This was my first RPG! My favorite site in the world! Now look! COME ON, PEOPLE! |
