The rear-drive sedans GM produced from 1991 to 1996, like the Chevy Impala SS, Buick Roadmaster, and Cadillac Fleetwood, are some of the most sought-after American cars of the early '90s. Why? The only thing the Nova had going for it was the first to bear 9C1. Otherwise I don't find it very interesting at all. Those weren't my favorite years for any GM car. And working on a 1977 Buick Electra recently reminded me why I don't own any GM cars from that era. With the crazy single exhaust crossover pipe going directly from one manifold to the other manifold instead of a Y-pipe, I don't know what they were thinking. GM did some really stupid things back then. Heck they all did due to the new emissions laws...

Mid to 1960s were my favorite for most cars, especially police cars (1969 Polara anyone?). Then 1972 is the cutoff point for me until I started digging the late 80's boxy Caprices. And then I completely fell in love with the 90s LT1 cars. And then after 1996, it was dead again until the Caprice PPV came about in 2011. Big gaps covering a decade or more for me over the years.

+1 on your feelings on the car in stock form. Even the article stated that compared to today's performance standards the Nova pretty much sucks. Just to be clear, I wasn't talking about my favorite year for cars. Everyone knows there was not a whole lot to get excited about in the mid 70's until the mid 80's coming from the Big 3. On the other hand, I do have a soft spot for the "Bluesmobile" Monacos and Trans Ams from the mid to late 70's!

I'm looking at the Nova from a hot rod/sleeper standpoint. Cheap, lightweight, and easily accepts another GM V8. Something you can beat on and not feel guilty about it. B.T.W., that's a big Oh Yeah! to the '69 Polara!

My parents were St. Louis police officers in the '70's and loved the Novas. They were relatively quick compared to other cars of that era, but most of all, they were tough as nails and dead reliable. STLPD bought a bunch of Dodges after the Novas, and officers were trying to hold on to 100k+ mile Novas because they were more reliable than the new Dodges.

There are some departments in western PA that also refurbished their Caprices. Back then, I used to be friends with a well known mechanic (and Caprice fan) who rebuilt several Caprices for local law enforcement. He was the only guy I trusted to touch any of my Caprices (and now I just do all of my own work). But I remember seeing many Caprices at his shop at the time undergoing various stages of restoration. It was neat. At least one of the cars was a frame-off. But the usual fare was just new engine and trans, new suspension, control arms, repair any dents/dings on the body, replace body mounts, steering wheel, floor rubber, seat cloth, etc. Then back in service for another 100K+ miles. I've also read about some doing this with the CVPI as well lately. Guess some like their BOF.
