Year, make, model, and analog or digital would be helpful.

It's a good idea for new members to create a "signature" and put that info there. We can't read minds (though I wish I could sometimes).

Is it flickering, completely out, or just not displaying data (staying at zero)?

Could just need the contacts cleaned or could need to be sent out to United Radio for a rebuild.

Ugh, GM build quality or lack thereof.

FINALLY found a speedometer repair man who knows what he is doing to take repairing my 1994 9C1 digital speedo to the next level beyond my capabilities and he basically rebuilds it last weekend, gets it to light up, but now it throws a "1" up in front of whatever speed I am going. He also rebuilt my uncle's 1995 retail Caprice speedo and it works flawlessly again. So, had him back out today to try and fix this "1" popping up problem and we couldn't get it figured out so I let him take it back to his shop to work on it on his bench but now the 9C1 is useless for the next few days wait on a damned speedometer repair thanks to GM's cheap ass.

After messing with mine 2-3 times it still flickers in and out. Now Im considering running small diameter wires from the circut board terminals on the LED unit to the cluster.

It's either the contacts, the capacitors, or both.

That may or may not help.

There are a few common problems with these displays. 1) the terminals between the speedo board and the cluster board. And by the way, they aren't LED, they are vacuum fluorescent displays (VFDs). 2) the actual display board develops microcracks in the solder joints throughout the whole board that cause all kinds of erratic behavior, including flickering on/off, ghosted numbers in the odometer, Error to be displayed, etc. 3) and on 1996 Impalas only, there is a resistor kit that can fix the typical odometer problems.

The fix for #1 is to clean the terminals, slightly lift them with a precision screw driver, and reflow the solder on the display board.

The fix for #2 is to dissolve the conformal coating on the back of the display board with brake cleaner, desolder the VFD from the display board, reflow the solder to every component, including all the of chips. Then reinstall the VFD (it has to be removed to get to the joints under it). This is very time consuming but it is a permanent fix. Sometimes as mentioned, capacitors need to be replaced and the voltage regulator circuit on the cluster board needs to be tested and repaired if it is out of whack. Essentially an entire overhaul of the cluster. The guys who charge $300 for this is spot on. It's very labor intensive. And I've done it myself, so I know. If I were to do it, I'd charge more than $300!

The fix for #3, Impala SS only, is to get the resistor fix kit (NAISSO used to sell it). I thought I read somewhere that the '96 Caprices also have a similar problem, but I don't have any 96's to take apart and see. I'd say that's wrong, and that '96s have the same exact design as the '94-95. Only the Impala SS got the different digital ODO and analog gauge package.

I stumbled into an old timer here that was able to replace the capacators on mine, on top of touching up some soldering on my current 94 9C1. Of course that been about six months ago, now my 3rd digit stays lit all the time, nothing electrical tape won't fix.
