Title: Favorite or "Named" models
Description: It's in the name baby.

Deadmeat5150 - July 10, 2006 09:58 PM (GMT)
Well I'm relitively new here so as my first post I have decided to post about my favorite tabletop model. Many of the 40K tabletop players that I have talked to have 'special' models that they use only in extreme circumstances, tournament games, and when they want to show off. Occasionally, these models have names or titles and have been customized to make them more distinct.

I have several but I'll talk about my favorite. A Dark Angels Veteran Sergeant appropriately named, "Sarge".

Sarge started life as a standard Space Marine model equiped with only a bolt pistol and a chain sword. The first two battles with Sarge were fairly standard, with him barely doing anything to cover himself in the glory that would later come. In his first battle against the Dark Eldar, however, he watched as his squad was taken down by many ravening Wyches.

One successful moral check later, and Sarge was left to stand alone against the horde. Fierce melee combat ensued and in the end the Wyches were forced to make their own moral check and broke before Sarge's might. Fun in the sun time. Shortly thereafter, though, Sarge was made into a pasty treat by a Wraithlord.

But Sarge wasn't done! Next battle he returned with Bionics, that lovely little addition that allows your model to get back up when it goes down. This was Sarge's saving grace.

Over the course of many games Sarge was able to distinguish himself by taking down ork Warbosses, Chaos Lords, Heretic Librarians, and many many Tyranids. By the time I retired the model (about the time I retired from tabletop) Sarge had a collection of nifty toys like an Iron Halo as well as his own character sheet in which I carefully recorded his many exploits. He also became my first customized model as I added minor changes to him over time.

So, anybody else who plays tabletop have any favorite models and whatnot that they which to share with the world?

Or at least this small chunk of it?

Eldar Phoenix:

Very dangerous Aircraft when used properly!

Not only is it extremely difficult to hit with ranged weapons (being an aircraft), but it also boasts an invulnerable save too, just for Eldar.
Also, as it's a flyer, it can avoid close combat altogether plus one can only glance its armour.

It also carries very versatile weaponry, useful even against tyranids.
I favour the tactic of distraction:
Where I move the phoenix to the target within the absolute maximum range of its powerful anti heavy-infantry/vehicle weapons, & pick off the most dangerous things
(for example - Space Marine predators), while avoiding the majority of enemy heavy weapon firepower.

Also, on larger boards, it's really funny to have the enemy's best vehicles in the middle of the board, with their front armour exposed to your side of the table, only to find that the Phoenix suddenly appears behind them & completely incinerates tham at their rear armour values.

I've destroyed several Predators with this vehicle, & it's never been destroyed in battle. Only damaged...

BadgerNun - July 16, 2006 03:42 PM (GMT)
Nice how much did that cost now Zany?

Zany Reaper - July 16, 2006 05:35 PM (GMT)
£59.50, but it was worth it.

I hope to use it in the Medusa V campaign, with my Eldar against a load of Necrons.
Phoenixes aren't particularly lethal to vehicles with AV 14, despite their firepower. But I can still destroy a Monolith with a Phoenix.

Morkai - Try not to go off topic here.

That's tactics stuff. Post that sort of stuff in the Tactics forum here please.

To answer to your question, Zany, I play the Imperial Guard of the 51st Regiment of Arkia, The Black Legion (for now but I'll change my background) of Traitors, and soon the Orks (surely the Blood Axes) and the Impreial Fists.

I have 3000pts of IG and 2000pts of CSM

Here they're some pics of my Thousand sons squad (I've not finished to paint the squad entirely yet) :

And Melak'irh :

That was for my Chaos Army, now I'll talk about Melak'irh, Champion of the Thousand Sons squad the Forgottens.

Melak'irh lead the unic unit of Thousand Sons in supporting the Sons of Horus' 15th Huge Company in his mission to track Abbadon and kill him.
As his master, Ahriman, Melak'irh is a very mysterious people who act as non predictable... According to the Imperium opinion...

If it's right to see Melak'irh and his "men" engaged in a arrasment war with the Imperium forces, it's not rare to see his Thousand Sons squad and the entirely 15th Compagny attacking the Traitors at moments of great loses for the Imperium as well, such as the 13th Black Crusade during they permit to the defenders to launch counter attacks on the Abbadon's armies.

Melak'irh mastered the magic arts as Ahriman or his old chief that he choosed to disown and, even he's a squad leader, he became as powerful as a lord.

Oh, just a thing Zany ; Very nice model that you have here^^ Forgeworld one, isn't it? Is that you who painted this eldar flyer?

Zany Reaper - July 21, 2006 01:48 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I painted that Phoenix, though I over-highlighted it. That's one of the things that make it look less good than I wanted. It's an old paint-job though, about 6 or 7 months ago actually.

I'm presently painting my 2nd Eldar Heavy weapons platform (metal). It's easier than I thought, because I have Regal, enchanted & ice blue. Those are all the blue colours I need for it. No white - or it'll be over highlighted.

It actually looks a bit messy, but the blending & gradients look good.

I can't see those thousand sons clearly. Try holding a magnifying glass in front of your camera for a better close-up focus.
I think I can see vague highlights though. Try making the blue & yellow bits on the egyption 'helmet symbol' gradiented a bit, so that they get darker towards the middle.

My 2nd favourite models (tactically) are probably farseer jetbikes. I have 2 of these!
I give them loads of psychic powers & singing spears to go tank hunting. Works like a charm against Necron Monoliths!

The 2nd one was made purely from an Eldar Jetbike, modeling putty (milliput & Green stuff) & plasticard.
It was fun to sculpt, though I wish I could've said the same for the wierd paint-job I gave it, which consisted of many various ink washes & an apparent lack of highlights.

It looks good in some areas, but it just messed up in others, particularly on the yellow bits.

Now I've learned how to master it by combining that technique with blending & highlighting. It sounds odd, but it works (heavy platform here).

Khorney - August 4, 2006 01:05 PM (GMT)
i'm luvin' the nightbringer a bit at the moment. alright the paint job is shockingly poor (i shouldn't have done the eyes =/) but its a cool model:

one bit that i think went well though is the mettalic sheen on the skin, which you cant really see here, to reperesent his necrodermis (living metal stuff that monoliths are made from)

Zany Reaper - August 4, 2006 02:31 PM (GMT)
you rely on drybrushing too much.

Highlight your models properly for a better effect.

I prefer the deceiver to the Nightbringer, but only because of the paintjob, which uses all metallic colours.

Khorney - August 5, 2006 03:49 AM (GMT)
'properly'? do elaborate, my advanced painting skills are somewhat..lacking, i jst used what ive taught myself over the years, and therefore is rather limited.
For his skin i started with a mix of black ink and mightnight blue. i then pianted watered down codex grey to fill the recesses. I then lightly drybrushed white onto it for highlights. I then added watered down midnight blue to fil the recesses again and then very watered down mithril silver to make it metallic, with out ruiing the colour. although it did make his chest loose some of its shading in the process

Zany Reaper - August 5, 2006 08:10 AM (GMT)
Ok, you got the basic idea, except that you drybrushed instead of highlighted, & in this case - it's bad.

What I mean by highlight is that you paint (literally apply the paint manually) the raised areas with a brighter colour than the recesses to imitate the light effects on the thing, as if it was bigger (which it is in the 41st millenium).

After you've done that - paint the areas that face the light source directly with an even brighter colour.

It's a good idea to blend your colours too so that you get a decent gradient effect on the model.

One more thing: Don't Over-highlight your models. Although it brings out good contrast, don't do it, because it makes it unrealistic.
The only thing you should over-highlight for are metals.

well my fav unit hast to be my invincible chaplain of cheesy DOOM! and his enormasly cheesed up sword brethren bodygaurds.

he has a X+ inv save (rosarius) a Y+ armour save (artificier armour) bionics (u know what this does already) and an adamantine mantle so he cant be instant killed! add that to the fact that he gets 6 power wepon attacks on the charge and hes about everyones worst nightmare! (apart from zany's starcannony eldar force of DOOM!)

(yes, no posting rules mister!)

as for his bodygaurd of religios nutters they are all equipped with termie hounours for extra ownage!

Zany Reaper - August 15, 2006 05:57 PM (GMT)
Lo, please don't post rules or armour save info though. GW doesn't like it, unless it's affected by modifiers.
Read the rules please.

Black Templars are better at deep-striking. It seems that I can adapt to such events though.

Star cannons rock, especially how I use them. Your Chaplain & other HQ choices stood no chance what-so-ever against my force. Infact, they never have!

i have my chapter of space marines all equiped with furious charge, but the command squad (mostly chaplain and Chap master and 4 bodyguards armed to the teeth) always cost's a small fortune, so rarely makes it worth it unless you spend even more points on a razorback. always there problem with SM's, you never have enough troops because they have so much kit and options. and they loose out comapared to chaos as all their troops are cheaper for some reason...

Zany Reaper - August 25, 2006 12:17 PM (GMT)
Their troops don't have the know no fear rule.

Minaithnir2005 - September 17, 2006 10:27 AM (GMT)
i like my baneblade, shadowsword and stormblade im getting soon (unless disaster strikes)

Zany Reaper - September 17, 2006 10:55 AM (GMT)
Are you talking about the Epic 40K models?

Minaithnir2005 - September 18, 2006 02:12 AM (GMT)
no 40k models for IG, i just love them :D

Zany Reaper - September 18, 2006 07:28 PM (GMT)
Well, it'd sure be a good idea to post some pictures then! I didn't even know that you collected the tabletop miniatures anyhow.

Games day isn't far off, & I can barely wait to buy that new Eldar Wraithlord.

If that isn't there though, then I'll try & buy a Necron Pylon instead, for the pure interest of owning a Necron war machine.

Minaithnir2005 - September 18, 2006 09:55 PM (GMT)

Zany Reaper - September 19, 2006 06:46 PM (GMT)
It'll be very annoying painting them. The Phoenix was probably one of the hardest to paint (though the Necron monolith is even more tedious).
Such models will probably be even harder to paint well.

Also, you could've used screenshots of the mod's shadowsword for reference!

So, have you ordered these models then?

Games day isn't far off. About 5 days from this post.

I aim to buy the new Eldar Wraithlord there. If it isn't there though, then I'll buy a Necron Pylon instead for the hell of having a titan killer.

Minaithnir2005 - September 19, 2006 07:38 PM (GMT)
no i havent, things keep coming up, if i cant get them this year (last year school) ill get them in january because ill have been working log enough by then, i also have to buy the chaos fleet for BFG

Zany Reaper - September 19, 2006 09:10 PM (GMT)
Yeah right. I know that most people say they'll buy them in a month or 2, & in reality either take much longer, or don't bother.
Pie Slayer of Cake is a good example of this.

Minaithnir2005 - September 20, 2006 11:13 PM (GMT)
yeah your right i have to rebudget for uni savings, i have alloted savings for the 3 superheavies in january, i am going to get them though. just going to take me awhile lol, think of the paint and glue....

Zany Reaper - September 21, 2006 10:07 AM (GMT)
Well, I hope that you manage then!

sunray - September 26, 2006 12:20 AM (GMT)
Hi All,

Has everyone seen the new Death Korps of Krieg squad and HWs that Forgeworld has just released? They are fantastic models, with an incredible level of detail.

Sounds like we will see a command squad, and numerous other unit types, in the near future.

Zany Reaper - September 26, 2006 08:20 PM (GMT)
Like these?

user posted image

At Games day, there were these wierd Necron conversions using Defiler limbs. They were basically defiler-sized Tomb Spyders with a crystal shoved in their carapace, & much simpler & less detailed.
They didn't look that great to me. The carapace was made from polystyrene. They seemed to be leaning against some pyramid structures in the Mega battle.

sunray - September 27, 2006 03:18 AM (GMT)
Zany Reaper,

Yes, they are exactly what I mean. The details are superb. And what a wide range of heavy weapons. Can't wait to see the command squad, the storm troopers, and the vehicles/artillery. The TT fraternity must be overjoyed.

It will be great to see a DKOK mod finished for DOW WA (and DC) as well.

The Eldar Wraithlords sold out 10 minutes before I arrived in the building.

How crap. That's why I got the Pylon instead. Would've preferred the Wraithlord being an eldar collector though.

any suggestions on any other tanks?

Zany Reaper - January 13, 2007 01:19 PM (GMT)
Bastard! You get unrealistically cheap deals I can't find!

QUOTE

How about 10 shadowswords to show your dedication to the TTRU mod!?

I know! A Warhound Titan! It's better than most tanks (perhaps apart from the shadowsword though, when dealing with other titanic things).

As fir my Eldar Army, I got the New Wraithlord! The body itself is about half-painted. The weapons (apart from the wraithsword & a flamer) are unpainted though.

Minaithnir2005 - January 13, 2007 09:46 PM (GMT)
i got the new eldar wraithlord months ago, i fitted its joints with mini magnets so you could change weapon for dif battles,

10 shadowswods? thats a s**t load of $

warhound? mayby, i may just get a vulture gunship as well, i missed the 25pound new vulture deal :(

Zany Reaper - January 14, 2007 09:57 AM (GMT)
For the weapons, I couldn't pin them as there're no real good pinning points, & it'd be a bitch to do so. Magnets... Similar thing. How'd you do it?
Got any pictures?

Mine's gonna be well-painted though.

Minaithnir2005 - January 15, 2007 08:57 AM (GMT)
um group effort, took a lot of work, basically get small fridge magnet (strip style) and cut to fit and the araldite on

Zany Reaper - January 15, 2007 07:57 PM (GMT)
Would Blu-tack work?

Minaithnir2005 - January 17, 2007 05:41 AM (GMT)
NEVER USE BLU TAK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

we did it a few times and it screw the models up real bad, paints wnt stick etc

Zany Reaper - January 17, 2007 10:01 AM (GMT)
Ah but the model's half painted, & I'm planning on varnishing it (satin) anyways.

So if not blu-tack, then what can I do? I couldn't pin the stuff because of those slotta joints...

Minaithnir2005 - January 18, 2007 05:38 AM (GMT)
hmm, i still suggest tose thin fridge magnets, the bendy rectangles etc, cut to size and super glue on. you could use green stuff to reduce hole width BUT NOT DEPTH and have it as a plug in plug out model

Zany Reaper - January 18, 2007 10:56 AM (GMT)
Thin fridge magnets?

hang on - where do I get those? I've never even heard of such things (I thought there were only thick ones).

Got any pictures or sources?
