Greek cult cinema???

I know about Asian cult cinema. I know about Turkish cult cinema. I know about Euro and American cult cinema. But I don't know shit about GREEK cult cinema!!!

I can't find any text info on this. No books. No chapter in the Mondo Macabro book. No online websites. Can someone please write an intro to Greek cult cinema!!! Please.

What's good, what's not?? What's trashy cool cinema, what's lame mainstream???

Who are the good directors?? Which actor names should we look for???

I see Miltos has a few Greek films on eBay but I don't know if they're any good. Are they easy to follow when you don't understand Greek? Turkish films are like cartoons, you don't really have to understand the dialogue.

I suggest that you start from an interesting (hard to find) book: GREEK EROTICA. The text is in English. It could be a good introduction to Greek exploitation films.

Greek exploitation is very, very interesting indeed. When I saw my first Milonakos' and Efstratiadis' movies at the end of the 70s, I fell in love with this kind of cinema - and I'm still in love with it.

Greek exploitation films suffer from "simple" plots, this means you can easily understand the story even if you don't speak Greek. They mainly focus on sexploitation (usually covered by a "crime" plot) but you can find some interesting action or "mountain" westerns (action with horses and gunmen) from the 60s & 70s.

There were only a few horror films, the best one is EFIALTIS from the early 60s. But horror films are more difficult to follow the story.

The 1983 film Dracula of Exarcheia by Nikos Zervos. O Drakoulas ton Exarheion is a pretty wild film, kind a like Rocky Horror Picture Show or a consert video with a horror movie plot. Pretty entertaining even without subs or dialogue I can understand.

The 1977 romantic comedy called Island of Death by Nico Mastorakis, who also did the 1976 sci-fi thriller Para Psychics.

The 1976 film Devil's Men by Kostas Karagiannis, who also did the thriller Rape Killer. Unfortunately the Devil's Men is a bit wooden, even though it has it's moment and a nice cast (Donald Pleasence and Peter Cushing). Peter Cushing was also in the Incense for the Damned, a 1971 British film mostly filmed in Greece. There are of course a lot of cult films filmed in Greece, like Sergio Martino's La coda dello scorpione or the Masuo Ikeda's Dedicato al mare Egeo...

EFIALTIS (=NIGHTMARE) is a very scary horror film from the early 60s!

I have this one tape I've mean to watch but I can't remember the title.

I watched this one funny and hairy Greek porn with hc inserts called Island of rape (I think). It had a certain Godfrey Ho-feel to it because of the inserts.

Is it out on DVD? Or even VHS?

No...Bill from Onar Films told me once he was his dream to release it as it was one of his favourites. It had a TV screening a couple of times many years ago.

Yes, these was a series of "detective" video movies from the early 80s free based on Greek crime novels. All directed by Soulis Georgiadis and starring Giorgos Siskos as "Inspector Lekkas". Some of them were a full movie while others have 2-3 episodes (stories). I'm sorry I don't remember if yours is a whole story. There are many of these tapes and they are rather mediocre with a plot hard to follow even if you're a Greek
