Japanese DVD releases (cult / vintage), Toei, Nikkatsu, Toho...

pretty self-explanatory topic. Hopefully other contributors will join.

Be warned that this topic may be a little bit Japanese heavy in places simply because some of these films are not found in English language databases like IMDb...

Of course, none of these releases come with English subtitles. English subs are such a rarity on Japanese dvds that I will only mention it if subtitles are included.

To give the thread a good start let's take a look what Toei has releases on DVD since 2011. These are my old posts from another board, so please forgive me incorrect time forms etc. ("will release" when the release is already out etc.). Every month Toei releases 2-3 catalogue titles on DVD, always remastered and anamorphic widescreen, but never with subs. The releases are themed, such as 3 films by a speciffic director or 3 films from a specific series. Years ago they used to release 4-6 titles every month but those glory days are over, sadly.

Note that a few months are missing, which is because
a) That month Toei released something too recent to be of interest
I just missed it because I was too lazy and the films didn't seem that interesting.

In March Toei will finally release Zero Woman: Red Handcuffs (1974) and the two New Female Prisoner Scorpion films (1976-&1977). Zero Woman is already available from Discotek and HK Video, both somewhat flawed releases, and the New Female Prisoners can be found in Pathe's Sasori box set, but those are NTSC to PAL conversions.

Both New Female Prisoners are good films, though, especially the first one which is kinda standard genre film (in a good way) until the amazing ending. It's a loose remake of the original Meiko Kaji movie but not to the extent that you'd feel like watching the same movie again. The second film features an entirely new storyline. Both films feature strong cast with the edge going for the second film in which the evil warden is played by none other than Toei's No. 1 karate villain Masashi Ishibashi. Sasori is portrayed in these films by Yumi Takigawa and Yoko Natsuki respectively.

Toei is typically strong when it comes to colors and contrast, but sharpness (or the lack of it) has been their problem in the recent years. If they get these discs right, they could all be worthy upgrades.

In October Toei will release the two Wandering Ginza Butterly films, already out on DVD in the US by Synapse. I wonder if their sales are hurt by imports by now. I've actually seen Synapse's (Toei film) dvds on sale in HMV in Japan. Horrors of Malformed Men was there at least, something else too but can't remember what...

The films are based on manga by Dôkuman, and were produced by Nikkatsu. Nikkatsu also had some non-pink productions in the 1970's... some say it was partly so that they could prevent their best directors like Sone (who clearly had talent much beyond pink films) leaving the studio. Screenwriter Yôzô Tanaka is quite well known, too... he went from Nikkatsu pink to Toei Yusaku Matsuda films and eventually to Shinji Somai classics in the 80's... his work is a bit uneven, though. Nikkatsu star Junko Miyashita appears in all three films.

The same day also sees the low priced (2,267 / 2,380) re-releases of the Stray Cat Rock films, so if someone hasn't picked them up yet, or somehow ended up with bootlegs, here's an opportunity to redeem yourself.

It's a real shame that these don't have English subs. I'd buy some of 'em! Thanks for the info, though. Very interesting.

What was wrong with the Discotek release of ZERO WOMAN?

Discotek (which I tried once) and HK Video (which I own) are essentially opposites of each other... whenever one looks great, the other looks much less so... and the other way round.

In some scenes HK Video looks much more natural and colorful than the Discotek...

... but in many others it suffers from the typical HK Video look... very sick skintones (varying between gray and purple) and unnatural looking image. Discotek looks much more pleasing here.

Overall, I'd say Discotek has the superior image most of the time, however, HK Video has better, punchier audio, which makes it the winner in my books. The difference is not huge, though - if you've got the Discotek, it's probably not worth getting the HK Video.

The HK Video release is available in the Coffret Femmes Fatales box set with Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion. The set includes two digipacks and a 16 page booklet. The transfer for Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion, suffering from many of the same problems as Zero Woman, is clearly inferior to the R1 Media Blasters or R2J Toei releases.

Toei September is a Yasuaki Kurata month

Which is Stronger: Karate or the Tiger (武闘拳　猛虎激殺！) (1976)

I've actually seen this mofo on 35mm! And no, this is not Dragon Princess although some websites make the mistake, but a Yasuaki Kurata karate film in which he fights a tiger! Directed by Kazuhiko Yamaguchi (Sister Street Fighter) and of course co-starring Masashi Ishibashi in a villain role!



Also coming the same day is another Kurata movie: Bloodfight (ファイナル・ファイト　最後の一撃) (1989)
