I just finished Flann O'Brien's "the third policeman" and I really have to recommend this mad piece of genius. It's a bit like Alice in Wonderland crossed with Monty Python. The first chapter is not very exciting yet, but after that it just gets curiouser and curiouser!
Before that I read "Venus in Furs". Well written and interesting and of course it became famous for its subject. It might have too much of that fin-du-siecle decadent 'show off how well cultured you are' vibe for some though, but I liked it a lot. And before that I finally delved into a little Jim Thompson. I have had an omnibus of his most famous novels for years, but what made me pick it up now was the news that Michael Winterbottom has made a movie of "the Killer Inside Me" that is supposedly not only very shocking but also very good. The book, I have to say, is VERY good. It's hardboiled pulp, but clearly mister Thompson is as well cultured as any of the above writers. He knows how to tell a gripping story and at the same time delves into the mind of a killer in an unflinching way like not many would or could. |

Not much to read, but i love this book about celebrating Halloween by wearing strange costumes and masks. The book shows a lot of old black and white pictures of people dressed for this special day. It's fantastic, sometimes eerie and weird. Totally fascinating. Foreword by the one and only David Lynch!
