This is a thread for all the art work, movie appearance and real life sightings of this wonderfull phenomena. Hopefully we can come up with a good filmography with time.

Movies that come immediately in my mind:

Mystics in Bali
Gong Tau (2007)

Was there some in Queen of Black Magic? It's been while since I saw it.

My most beloved Asian monster !!!!
To my knowledge, the Krasue, or Penanggalan, or Manananggal, appeared in at least 25 Asian movies from different countries. This is a probably incomplete list:

Ang Manananggal - Philippines, 1927 (yes! not a typo) - Joe Nepumuceno
Manananggal vs. Mangkukulam - Philippines, 196? - Consuelo P. Osorio
Krasue Sao - Thailand, 1973 - S. Naowaratch
Fei taugh moneuh / The Witch with Flying Head - China, circa 1977 - Wo Liang-sing
Drakula Tok - Thailand, 1979 - Lor Tok (# 2 in Yotsuya's post above)
Krasue - Thailand, 1982 - dir: ?
Mo / Boxer's Omen - Hong Kong, 1983 - Kwei Chih-hung
Itthirit Nammanphrai - Thailand, 1984 - dir: ? (# 1 in Yotsuya's post above)
Shakle, Rattle and Roll - Philippines, 1984 - dir: ? (sketch: Manananggal)
Mistik / Le'ak / Mystic in Bali - Indonesia, 1987 - H. Tjut Djalil
Oil of Eternal Life, Thailand, circa 1987 - dir: ?
Krasue Gad Pop - Thailand, 1990 - Phlaawut
Krasue Sing- Thailand, 1990 - dir: ?
Krasue Grahailuead - Thailand, 1995 - Sang-Tawan (poster below)
Manananggal in Maynila - Philippines, 1997 - Mario O'Hara
Tamnan Krasue / Demonic Beauty - Cambodia/Thailand, 2002 - Bin Banluerit
Krasue Valentine - Thailand, 2006 - Yuthlert Sippapak
Gong Tau / An Oriental Black Magic - Hong Kong, 2007 - Herman Yau
Chao Pous Keng Kang / Grandson's Snake Child/Snake's Love - Cambodia, 200? - Fai Saman
Burn the Witch ! / Plerng Ches Arb - Cambodia, circa 2004 -
Arb / Nieng Arb ("Vampire") - Cambodia, 2004 - Kam Chanty
Krasue / Erotic Thai Ghost Story - Thailand, ???? - John Wren

The same monster also appears as a "guest star" in the "Ghost with Hole" series ("Sundel Bolong"), composed of four Indonesian movies directed by Sisworo Gautama Putra, and starring mega-star Suzzana. However, before to include their titles in the above filmography, I must verify if each of them has a penanggal, or only some of them, and which ones.
A recent remake of "Sundel Bolong" exists, I don't know if a penanggal appears in it.

Note: the movie "Penanggalan" which appears on the IMDb site is probably a hoax. First, Tulsi Ramsay never directed anything outside of India. And in 1967, Suzzana wasn't in horror movies. It COULD be a "two-in-one" production, you know, these patchwork movies made from segments from other films, with newly added scenes, like the ones produced by Godfrey Ho (or Jerry Warren in the USA), but I have a doubt about it. In any case, I didn't find anything with the same mixed casting anywhere.

Below is the Thai poster of KRASUE GRAHAILUEAD, in my room (!) :

Gott im himmel, Sweeney Todd!!! What a list!

And a great thread, Yotsuya. Hmm, I take it you don't follow the "Official Movie Viewing Log" thread so closely, aye? tongue.gif I actually mentioned having watched a flying head movie the other day!

And incidentally, the film in question is the one for your first poster! Actually, they used the same picture for the VCD. Here's what I wrote:

Itthirit Nammanphrai (1984).
Flying head with intestines dangling film from Thailand (unsubbed Thai VCD). 30 minutes of very boring talky scenes completely unrelated to the rest of the film... but the rest of the film: think Mystics in Bali if Mystics were done in Hong Kong in the early 80s!! Very enjoyable, very weird, and quite enjoyable (as long as you know how to fast forward thru those truly boring 30 minutes. If some US company took this and had it dubbed into English and cut it down to 60-65 min. you would have a cool Flying head flick! There's even a scene with singing skeletons!

Also, a few days later (April 2) I posted having won this on eBay:

Which is the same as Sweeney's very cool poster (I'd love that poster, Jean-Claude!).

And - again incidentally - I just ordered a VCD version of the film for your second poster (Drakula Tok)!!!

And to answer your question; yes there is a flying head in QUEEN OF BLACK MAGIC! There's even a guy who - in one of the most amazing scenes in any movie - while walking in a crowd, suddenly pulls off his own head! Oh, and if you haven't seen this in the Asian section: Mondo Macabro are putting QUEEN out next!!!

When the Krasue goes Cambodia...
ARB, aka NIENG ARP, aka VAMPIRE
FCI Prods, 2004
Directed by Kam Chanty
Starring Dan Monika, Sovan Makar

user posted image

As most of the Cambodian movies - don't ask me why - this title is on two DVDs. The total running time (for the movie) is about 130mns, and you have 30mns of incredible bonus, including bloppers, but also totally fascinating trailers of recent horror / fantasy Cambodian productions.
And - the last but certainly not the least - this DVD has removable English subs !

Another Cambodian Krasue...
PLERNG CHES ARB aka BURN THE WITCH !
Hang Ban Productions, 2004
Directed by ... ? ... (sorry, but the credits are in Khmer)

user posted image

Note: NO English subs. The movie is also on two discs, but the two jackets are the same.

J-C, did you see Lars Jacobsens post in the Movie watching thread? He commented on a movie I reviewed and then mentioned a "flying witch" film called GHOST OF GUTS EATER. I looked thru your list but couldn't see it listed. Either it's a movie you didn't know about or it's an English title you just didn't have. But pretty interesting that it came out in Sweden (and I assume dubbed into English!). Have you ever heard of it???

Here's my post:

I wonder... could this be the thai flying witch-thingy that was released in Sweden as Ghost of Guts Eater (how this ended up in Sweden i'll never know...)? I don't remember any skeletons but does the film feature a magic ring, a giant, some village melodrama and the worst flying head-FX in mankind?

A weirdo favorite of mine in that case. I always wondered about the title since my thai is not up to date and i've never found any other references to the Ghost of Guts Eater title outside of Sweden...

No, I never did heard of this English title. With a magic ring and a giant in the screenplay, theorically we could perhaps identify the movie - but unfortunately these Thai flicks are never reviewed in such detail on the Web... Perhaps a Thai horror film fan could put a title on the movie.
If someone could send a scan of the Swedish jacket, it could help greatly. Could you ask to this Swedish fan if he remember the title in Swedish ? (not an English translation of the Swedish title).
I put the "Krasue" (1982) Thai poster on a Thai site some days ago and asked for a precise identification of the movie and, to date, just got two answers, one telling that he can't help me (!), and the other that he could read one word on the poster: "krasue" laugh.gif Please don't laugh....

I just noticed the mention on the left: "advanced member". It's the word, "advanced", that we use in France when a cheese is... well, rather old biggrin.gif

I won't! cool.gif

And you're right. It's very frustrating. Apparently it is also difficult for Thai people to transfer the Thai alphabet into Roman letters; some of the films I've found on eBay had titles (in Roman alphabet) spelt differently than for instance at some of the Thai eShops. So if the Thais don't even know how to write these titles no wonder we have difficulties with them. No laughing matter. dry.gif laugh.gif

One eBay seller that I've found that has quite a few old Thai horror (and action) movies is this one:

I know this eBay seller - he has the best choice of old Thai movies that I ever saw.

The Cambodian apparently have the same problem with the transcription of their language. I saw "The Crocodile Men" spelled different ways on websites:
- Kritong Krapercharavann (visibly a mistake, "kraper" and "Charavann" beign two different words.
- Krai Thorng kropeu Chharavann
- Krai Thorng krawper Charavan

Worst: the VCD is, as you know, Chinese - so all the credits were "Chinesized" (?).
So, the director (Hui Keung) became Kam Yung (in Cantonese), Jin Weng (in Mandarin), and Chin Weng (in Mandarin from Taiwan) !!!

Famous Cambodian actress Dy Saveth (or Dee Savet) became Li Sa Yue / Li Sha Yue / Li Sha Yueh... and when the eBay seller had (recently) the Thai poster of "Crocodile Men" for sale, he named her "Deesavate" !!!

Incidentally, WHERE is the thread you mentioned ? I explored the entire forum and didn't find it. Must be very, very tired this morning. rolleyes.gif

Oh yeah, he's very good! I ordered a couple of VCD's from him and he has just sent me the tracking number for both the Thai and the Danish postal service plus he sent me a photo of the parcel!!! biggrin.gif

I was just wondering if the Swedish VHS mentioned by Lars Jacobsen wasn't this FILIPINO movie, unstead of a Thai production, as a giant is visible in the original movie ad...
