I've found myself being more and more attracted to HK Cat III thrillers and erotic films lately.
Not talking about the standard softcore stuff but about the more "out there" titles.

I suppose there's more people interested in these (or even Cat IIB) films over here? ;)
Would be interesting to have some discussions about favorites or recommendations imho.

I've found that as time goes on some films get a CAT III that don't really deserve the rating.

You mean newer films that get the rating?

I too find recent category ratings rather incoherent.

For example, "Love in a Puff" (2010 / featuring Shawn Yue and Miriam Yeung)'s Cat III rating was discussed a lot in the local media and among movie fans. This is a pretty straightforward romantic comedy without any nudity or violence. The director, Edmond Pang Ho-Cheung, explained that the rating was due to the amount of foul language and lewd jokes included.

When I watched it with English subtitles, I didn't notice anything too offensive...It is possible that everything was not translated, but still... :wacko:

Some older films also got the rating for strange reasons...like for depicting triad rituals (Jackie Chan's Crime Story) or "vulgarness" like Stephen Chow's The Flirting Scholar. ;)

I see...To be honest, I haven't really paid close attention to cat ratings in the past. I don't own many "out there" titles (in your definition :P ) but have quite a few triad/crime movies on DVD/VCDs. I'll probably study the ratings and the movie contents more carefully from now on, that'd be interesting.

Looking at all the newer "torture porn" horrors/thrillers made in the US and in Europe many of the old Cat III thrillers seem rather restrained nowadays. :)

Btw does anybody know of a complete list of Cat III releases?

Mainly interested in films made before 2000 (though there are exceptions). ;)

After discovering that Holy Virgin vs. the Evil Dead existed in a nude and clothed version,I've now found that Wizard's Curse also seems to have a nude and clothed version...I have a copy of the clothed version.
Does anyone know if the nude version is available somewhere?
The Nude version should have the opening wizards fight with a topless wizard,my version features a bra wearing wizard with some alternate shots of her upper torso showing no bra straps. :)

I wouldn' know Jack as it's a dvd-r copy I got on eBay and just the movie is on there,nothing else...it has burned in subs.

I'm already starting to doubt my claim of a nude and clothed version of Wizard's Curse because I don't seem to be able to find any evidence.
The absence of bra straps in some scenes of the first fight is strange though and the clothed version is only borderline Cat III imho... :D

is it in mandarin?? if so it may be the taiwan tape. they have been known to have alternate cuts and scenes

I'm looking for the cut Hong Kong version. I know there is a VCD of it.

I'm liking it so far but still have to finish watching.
Looks like the XXX scenes could be removed without problem at a first glance,but there could maybe have been some alternative soft footage filmed?

Power of Love CAT 3 Hollywood East Video vhs (Netherlands)

Earlier this year I've decided to work on an composite of Ivan Lai's classic Daughter of Darkness. The print is finally finish and got beautiful color calibration to match the widescreen footage. I used the Universe DVD and the long out of print VCD. Of course, the French DVD looks a bit better but it's more cut than the Universe print and is in PAL (which is just a pain when you mix it with NTSC footage)...
