How about Finland? Killer reindeers anyone?

I watched Valkoinen peura (1952) some years ago and was deeply impressed by beautifuly photographed landscape and simple but strong feeling of animism. It is regrettable that this master piece of horror is not widely known outside its home country.

Neitoperho (1997) ... A female version of William Wyler's The Collector. Psychopathic NEET girl (played by Leea Klemola) forces her way into middle aged woman's solitary house and confine the woman. Klemola performed mentaly unstable girl perfectly. I don't want to be her boyfriend!

My review is here.

Tuntematon sotilas (1955)

The best Finnish film ever made and one of the most successful as well.

dodo - August 6, 2009 06:37 PM (GMT)
Valkoinen peura is not on DVD even in Finland. And yes it’s a fantastic film!

If you like Neitoperho, I can recommend another film from the same female director called Pelon maantiede (2000). It’s on DVD in here, and for once the DVD has English subs! Here's more info:

Häjyt (1999)

One of the coolest Finnish films made!

L.A. - September 13, 2009 12:06 PM (GMT)
Karvat (1974)

Haven't seen this one yet but should be an interesting case from what I've heard.

Sami Haavisto (of Finland's "Blood Ceremony" magazine) has been keeping the Finnish horror genre alive as of late with the following directorial efforts of interest: BLACK BLOOD BRIDES OF SATAN, SUCCUBUS, RITES OF BLOOD and DESIRE OF THE INNOCENT BLOOD.

Also, i got hold of the film SAUNA (2008) some months back but have yet to find time to watch it. Looks pretty damned good though. Directed by Antti-Jussi Annila. IMDb seems to have a decent rating for it too and one contributed review on there for it refers to it as "a very unpleasant, terrifying film about sin, guilt and redemption"....sounds as good as it looks then!

One of the earliest Finnish horror films made.

Two fantasy/fairytale films and both available on DVD here in Finland with optional English subtitles:

Kuningas jolla ei ollut sydäntä (1982)

Beautiful classic. One of my favorite Finnish films.

Lumikuningatar (1986)

L.A. - September 30, 2009 12:02 PM (GMT)
Dark Floors (2008)

Haven't seen this one yet and I'll probably keep it that way.

Sampo (1959) aka The Day the Earth Froze.

Mega fantasy epic from 1959 made in collaboration with the Soviet Union. Based on our national epic "Kalevala"

When nobody wanted to see it, they tried to sell it as a horror movie "The Day the Earth Froze".

Pictures and review.
More pics from the same site.

They showed it on our national tv just a few days ago.

Anyone seen this one as tape release?

I have two tapes from Finland:

and the Suomi Filmi esittää one. I also have German tape with different edit of the film.

Was the TV version in widescreen this time?

Renny Harlin's Prison (1988) was released uncut on DVD quite recently here in Finland. The disc has optional Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian and Danish subtitles and some extras including a trailer, an exclusive interview with Harlin (48 minutes and in English) and two music videos (again directed by Harlin) from a band called Wild Force.

Where's the best place to order the Sensuela DVD?

Just watched Sauna yesterday. Genuinely creepy atmosphere, very well-made and the kind of film that you don't entirely grasp on first viewing. Recommended.

If you liked Sauna. I can recommend Muukalainen by J.-P. Valkeapää. It has a same feel to it, but is IMHO a much better film.

According to this site:

http://www.dvdplaza.fi/leffakanta/nayta.php?sid=11694

the DVD is in English and the sub are in Finnish and in Swedish. Funny, I thought the film was in Finnish when I saw it at theatre. Maybe my dementia is playing tricks…

I just got the DVD and it's in Finnish and the subs are in Finnish and in Swedish only. "oops!:

The Last Border / The Last Border - viimeisellä rajalla (1993)

Quite entertaining and hilarious Mad Max rip-off directed by Mika Kaurismäki. The Finnish DVD is a decent release, the film is mainly spoken in English.

Extras include an interview with M. Kaurismäki which is subtitled in English.

I never got to around to ordering the Sensuela DVD, and now I notice there's a Teuvo Tulio boxset that contains Sensula as well as three other films:

http://cdon.dk/film/paketti%3a_teuvo_tulio..._disc%29-898463

-any recommendations for this boxset? Or the other Teuvo Tulio boxsets in the same series for that matter..?

Hello Cinehounds! I've been gone awhile, but I've been silently lurking about lately to see what's been happenin'. Nuthin' much, it seem to me. But in keeping with the spirit of Jack J's "Back On Track" entreaty, I thought I'd re-insert myself back into this scene with some thoughts on a film I've just seen, Erik Blomberg's VALKOINEN PEURA aka THE WHITE REINDEER!

I thought it was wonderful, a simple folk-tale inspired gothic infused with a wild pagan spirit. The movie alternates moody and poetic passages with scenes possessed of a crude, amateurish vitality that at times reminded me of Turkish films from the 50s and 60s. There are many haunting and bizarre moments, my favorite being the weird image of our were-deer, back in lady form, (I love this actress’ face by the way) licking blood from her wounded shoulder. The animal look in her eyes in this scene is truly uncanny.

I have only one real complaint, but it's a big one. Despite being bookended by a haunting Finnish folk song, the generic, artless score is unnecessarily bombastic and completely destructive to the mood. I think a more subtle and droning soundtrack performed with traditional Northern European instruments would have done wonders for the texture of the film. It could've made it a near-masterpiece, instead of the fascinating oddity it remains.

That said, I really enjoyed it and look forward to seeing more Finnish movies. In addition to the French DVD of this film I've also rented the four disc Teuvo Tulio boxset that has SENSUELA on it. Can't wait to see what other unique experiences await!

Mads Jensen - February 3, 2012 06:43 AM (GMT)
Good to see you back, Jared. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on that Teuvo Tulio boxset.
