Title: Complete list of "Made in Hong Kong" tapes
Jack J - May 23, 2009 01:25 PM (GMT)
Complete list of video tapes from "Made in Hong Kong" (UK)
Someone in the UK was nice enough and made me what we believe is a complete list of vhs releases from "Made in Hong Kong". I have added info on format, dub/subs, and cut status.
MIHK also put out a handful of the films on laserdisc but I'm not sure how many.
Oh, and I guess I should try and say this gently to you so you don't go into a seizure: These tapes are sell-thru tapes. Not ex-rental.
If anybody has a list (complete or not) of releases from Eastern Heroes it would greatly appreciated if they'd post it or PM it to me. I'm not least interested in a list of their Dutch releases, and any info on cut status is always welcome. Cheers.

I have a few of these sell-thru tapes... sometime people just give these away! ;)
Jack J - May 23, 2009 02:00 PM (GMT)
Thanks, peter. Yeah, sometimes people do that (anybody who's got some spare ones can just send them this way, thanks ;) ) Could you please tell me the tape numbers of the MIHK and EH tapes. Thanks. I don't need the BLACK CAT tape or the Siren tape (which was from Australia, I have have a few of those as well).
The MIHK numbers are usually at the bottom on their back, beginning with HK0xx

AFAIK the cuts are made to a scene with animal cruelty. In other words, even tho itīs not complete, itīs still a quite watchable version.

Update:
HK031: God of Gamblers 3
HK047: The Flirting Scholar
Thanks Andras. B)
And before I forget; I also want to thank Mr. White who sent me a handful of these films for free all the way from the UK a little while ago. Cheers mate!! :hello!:

Unfortunately I don't have a clue about possible other box sets, The Killer is only one I've stumbled upon but at the other hand I haven't ever actively hunted them either. Situation of MIA boxes is also pretty much unknown to me, The Better Tomorrow and Naked Killer are the only ones I'm aware of.

:hello!:
Hi guys,
I'm new so I hope you don't mind my sudden intrusion on this thread.
I stumbled upon this this forum by accident looking for artwork to post with my online library (Thanks Andras, that upload of The Last Hero in China MIHK cover completed my Jet Li collection and I'd scoured pages of google results to find it... :D )
Since I have a few old MIHK tapes that look as if they they are still blanks on your complete catalogue list I thought I'd join and post the info.
HK035 MIHK Pedicab Driver VHS - Original Widescreen ratio - English Subs - Run Time 91 MINS
HK045 MIHK Fist Of Legend VHS - Original Widescreen ratio - English Subs - Run Time 98 mins
HK050 MIHK Zu Warriors Of THe Magic Mountain VHS - Original Widescreen ratio - English Subs - Run Time 98 mins
HK059 MIHK OUATIC VHS - Original Widescreen ratio - English Subs - Run Time 132 mins
HK060 MIHK OUATIC II VHS - Original Widescreen ratio - English Subs -Run Time 106 mins
I'm not sure how you verify if they have new subs or not or if the films are cut (not that expert I'm afraid) - but if I can retrieve anything else useful let me know where to look?
I've got The Fate Of Lee Khan and Dreadnought somewhere but they are still in storage so I will have to post the codes later.
Have a good one...
Jack J - August 7, 2009 09:31 PM (GMT)
Hello Littlemissbashful,
I'm sorry I couldn't answer your post earlier but incidentally you posted it just after I had to deal with some real life stuff and I was away from the forum for quite some time (no, I wasn't in jail, lol).
And apparently none of the other deadbeats here found it necessary to make a reply.
Anyhoo, thanks for your entries to the list. I'll add them ASAP. Cheers.
About the subtitles; well, usually the cinema subs are burnt into the print itself and the new video subs are placed under the picture (unless it's a fullscreen picture obviously but I think it's still quite easy to see if they are video subs or cinema subs). About the cuts; I have my info from Asian Dvd Guide (I assume someone made comparisons).
WANYON - August 7, 2009 11:12 PM (GMT)
On the MIHK tapes, from what i recall, the subs were often newly mastered.
I have a few MIHK tapes i am willing to part with for just a few quid each if anyone wants them? Most are MINT sell-thru (small-box) releases but i do have the ex-rental (big-box) release of Ringo Lam's CITY ON FIRE too...
The biggest, most frustrating thing about MIHK's tape releases was the fact that they used Macrovision on their tapes. Sure, anyone can get a cable or kit and remove the Macro signal. But maaaaaan...if you didn't have the means to do so, watching these films (despite being cracking quality releases at the time) was often marred by the fact that the colour was always made too strong by the Macrovision and the contrast was hard to get right also.
Their otherwise excellent tape release of BULLET IN THE HEAD was a case in point: everyone's skin-tones looked so damned peach-tinted and it was hard to get a satisfying image adjustment...
Otherwise....nice prints for the time that were often complete (the odd censored exception, of course), full-length original edits, original ratios, in clean condition and with good remastered subs...
Can't recall which i still have, but i believe it is A CHINESE GHOST STORY (sell-thru), PRISON ON FIRE (sell-thru), TIGER ON THE BEAT (sell-thru) and CITY ON FIRE (rental version). Maybe one or two others, but most have gone since the superior DVD versions materialised. May POSSIBLY still have one of the catalogues kicking around somewhere too (these were often included in with the tapes)...

Hi, thanks for the message and if you are still collecting numbers I don't think you have these:
HK067 MIHK Dreadnaught VHS Orig W/S ratio - English Subs
HK071 MIHK The Fate Of Lee Khan VHS Orig W/S ratio - English Subs
HK072 MIHK A Chinese Ghost Story II VHS Orig W/S ratio - English Subs
Cheers

Six months later and you get a reply! Sorry, things don't always go so quickly around here.
Thanks for your three entries. I've added them to the list.
Recently I got hold of PEDICAB DRIVER myself! It's really cool to get this tape as there's no official DVD release and because the copyrights are floating in a void there might never be a DVD release! :o The MIHK tape is the best there is; letterboxed, new subtitles, and fully uncut! The HK laserdisc is cut.
Jack J - January 21, 2010 06:26 AM (GMT)
MR VAMPIRE II: HK074. :D
Jack J - February 5, 2010 11:15 AM (GMT)

Arr, for fuck's sake!
I've just got hold of this UK VHS release of ROUGE. The reason I bought it was to get the film in its original format; the new(ish) DVD from Fortune Star has had its top and bottom cut off for some reason. I guess to make it look even more "letterboxed" than its original widescreen format. Go figure.
The old DVD releases are presented in the film's original format (at least that's what I've read) but unfortunately I haven't been able to find any of those anywhere. So I settled for a VHS which was released by a company called BlueLight but to my big surprise it turns out this video release is
exactly identical to any of the Made in Hong Kong tapes!!
Everything down to type of font, the way to write index number and all. And also the inside of the cover has info by Bey Logan and there's a list of the tapes that were currently available from MIHK at the time. Also, ROUGE is listed as being a MIHK release. But it wasn't! So I guess the people behind the MIHK company set up another line as well and for some reason included ROUGE in this and not in the Hong Kong series which is odd to say the least!
On the tape there are trailers for some of the other BlueLight releases and they're non-Asian films. So it seems the MIHK guys wanted a kind of "world film" series as well. Cool enough but this just means there's gonna be more titles to track down and I have no idea where to begin. Try looking for "Blue Light" via Google search!
Not a whole lot of you seem to have been able to help much with the MIHK tapes cos you don't collect sell-thru crap (haha) so I'm not too hopefull with this but if any of you have any tapes from this line and can provide title(s) + index number then that would be just smashing! :D Cheers.

Not sure if this list is still being updated, but I found some missing info on OFDb:
HK001: Full Contact (lbx, subbed, cut)
HK014: The Heroic Trio II (lbx, subbed)
HK023: Treasure Hunters (lbx, English dubbed)
HK025: Shaolin Martial Arts (lbx, English dubbed)*
HK026: Blood Brothers (lbx)
HK032: Blade of Fury (lbx, cut: horse falling down)
HK037: Wing Chun (lbx, subbed)
HK049: Mr. Vampire (lbx, subbed)
HK053: Warriors Two (lbx)
HK057: Prison on Fire(lbx, subbed)
HK076: Knockabout (lbx, subbed) **
* This one is not on your alphabetical list (or I missed an alternative title), but spannick knows what he's talking about, so if he contributed the info on OFDb
here the tape exists
**I know your list only goes to 74 (the alphabetical list has so far 70 titles I believe), but the
cover quite clearly shows a 76
Also, I can't quite make out the number on 'City on Fire'
here - might have to buy the tape myself to find out.
Jack, are you (still) looking to complete your collection and if so which titles are you missing?
Jack J - January 3, 2011 12:35 AM (GMT)
Thanks, mr. 8537935! And yes it's still being updated, I just haven't got any new ones for a while - and I'm probably one of the only ones here who are interested in these tapes as they are sell-thru and everyone here is just interested in ex-rental tapes. I'll add your tape numbers.
I still need a few titles to complete my own collection but right now I'm skint  :(
Thanks again.

You're right, and I'm well aware Spannick is an expert in these matters. He's also a member here, by the way.
About any missing titles: Originally, I asked about the titles on Asian Dvd Guide and this was the list someone had compiled, and I've just added info and numbers. I didn't know if there were numbers beyond #74 so that's why the list ended there. Any additions are welcome.
If anybody has #76 it would be nice if they could check if the subs are new (for the video release) or theatrical subs. Cheers.

I'm guessing the 'S' is for subtitled, maybe there also was a dubbed version?

two more index numbers from some auctions:
HK041 The Buddhist Fist (lbx, English dubbed)
HK066 Miracle Fighters (lbx, subbed)
For proof I have uploaded the scans I took the info from (
http://bayimg.com/OAIFhaAdF &
http://bayimg.com/OaIFJAaDF ), however since these aren't mine I'll remove them in about a week.
edit: ... and gone.
@Jack J: I wasn't worried about cinehound members, but the seller who originally made these scans, since I didn't ask him if I could use them.
Jack J - May 28, 2011 06:44 PM (GMT)
That's cool, thanks! I'll add them.
In regards to cover scans: This is Cinehound! :ph43r:
I'm fully awere there are other boards where people are tight with their scans and stuff. This isn't one of them. You can post your own scans or scans you find online or get from somebody else, you can post it all. We don't mind. B)
And you can go to any of the vhs cover sections where people post heaps of covers, and you can use any of them if you want. Everyone here is cool with that and they know it's how it is. Crediting the org. poster is polite tho.
